Recommended Breeder Section?

I know there's a rescue section, but is there any way a reputable breeder section could be added? I am on another forum for Chinese Cresteds and that is what they have done there. The breeders have to pass a test if you will to ensure they are reputable to be added to the list.

Also is there some kind of checklist for people to find out if a breeder is reputable? Specific health testing, etc.

We do not have a breeder section to try to keep things happy. Just because a breeder passed a check list does not mean they are a good breeder, nor does it mean they are bad. We find that keeping this forum about sphynx ownership works much better then being over run with adds of cats for sale and breeders starting fights or someone being mad because someone said something bad about them.
We also would not want to say a breeder is good that makes the list but them sells a cat that someone is not happy with. There is just no way to control it and keep everyone happy, so Admin and I decided it was best to keep breeders out.
Breeders are welcome to join the community but are asked to join as a sphynx owner and keep the sale of kittens and cattery info off of sphynxlair.

We do offer numerous topics on what to ask when looking for a kitten.
I hope you understand the reasoning we have behind this.

I understand, I just thought it would be helpful in weeding out some of the scams and also help people find reputable breeders. I didn't mean a place for breeders to advertise or sell kittens, but rather a list of breeders that people can contact and maybe even an area for real people to say either that breeder is good or not. Again I do understand your reasons for not including that kind of section, but I am happy I asked so that I do know.

We too wish there was a way to have a breeders section without the negative side effects. We purchased our sphynx from a small town breeder who did not take very good care of him. There were a lot of problems with our little Timmy right away and throughout the first year. We would love to purchase another but are reluctant due to our first experience.

One of the cattery's listed on the tica web site is a breeder that has one of Admin and my kittens, the parents to the kitten (her stud) are Leo and Athena. Athena is listed as a blue eye and she is not her eyes are green. Also she has Leo listed as a Grand Champion and he is not. and he does not have blue eyes. (well to me he is) never been to a show or anything.

All you have to do to get on that list is send in your $$$ nothing is checked out.

This is a perfect example of false information. It all comes down to research. Seeing the proof and the paper work. Just because someone says a breeder is good does not mean they are and just because the breeder pays Tica a fee every year to be on the list does not mean they are a good breeder.

Please everyone in search for a kitten do your research and go with your gut.

I bought one of my cats from an either TICA or CFA "Cattery of Excellence". I mistakenly thought that meant something. Her color was wrong, said she was a seal point and she was a seal mink, had all kinds of issues that took me a long time and lots of money to fix, had never been scanned. the breeder made me fax her a signed contract but she never returned the signed one to me and wouldn't stand behind her kitten. It was a horrible experience for me, yet other people RAVED about how good she was. You just can't judge your experience by other people's experience. I agree with the admins that it is a slippery slope--people will get all mad if they endorsed certain catteries as good and then they got a kit with problems or if one failed to make it on the "good breeder" list. It's better to let people make their own decisions about stuff like that.

I know it would be nice to have someplace to go that says "Such and such is a great breeder." But that is all subjective and can change at any moment in time. Or if someone gets mad at a breeder and tried to smear the breeder by putting out a bunch of lies--no matter what you say or do, some people will believe them and it can ruin you.
Better you should use all the resources available to you---look for complaints lodged against them online, talk to other clients they've had, ask to speak to their vets, talk to them yourself and go with your gut. There are no guarantees that ANYONE can provide you with a 100% positive experience. Problems can happen with everyone. Use your OWN gut feelings and judgement to make a breeder choice.
