I lost Reggie last Friday. It happened so fast… on Monday he collapsed and lost consciousness, I rushed him to the er where he had a full cardiac work up. He was diagnosed with HCM and in heart failure. He had a blood clot in his left atrium. Tuesday was awful but I told myself he’s just tired from his hospitalization. Wednesday I met with the cardiologist we had a plan. I knew I wasn’t going to get years but the cardiologist felt I could get months. Thursday was awful, collapsing, could not take more than 4 steps with out laying on his side, laying in the litter box. I left work early pulled out all the stops.. all his favorite things and he just didn’t have it in him to care. Friday morning I took him to his vet. She listened to his heart. He was in a fib. Said his heart was “irregularly irregular” had absolutely no rhythm to it. Said it was time, the kindest thing I could do at this point was euthanize. She knew about the clot in the left atrium, said he was a ticking time bomb and I was on borrowed time, even with the medications. I put him to sleep. He was brave and he wasn’t scared, he was tired and ready. To be honest it was the most perfect peaceful passing. The best possible outcome for the worst situation. Driving home with an empty carrier was surreal. The carrier is still in the car I couldn’t bring it upstairs with no cat in it. The next morning reality set in. My perfect 4 year old cub is gone. He’s just gone. I’m so profoundly heart broken. No Reggie getting up with me, no Reggie begging for a small lick of coffee creamer, no Reggie sitting in front of the heater while I drink my coffee.
Its been 8 days now and the hole in my heart is gaping. Everything in the house reminds me of him. It’s brutal, it’s pain so deep. I never understood before, I thought I did. I thought I could be empathetic but I couldn’t.
I told his vet even with the terrible outcome. I would do it all over again Reggie was that good of a cat. The best 4 years watching that little peanut grow and explore. He was just dealt an unfortunate hand in life. I love him so much.
My big boy Redmon, my solider. My soul… was diagnosed with intestinal adenocarcinoma on Thursday. I knew there was a problem, I could feel it. A few days before Reggie collapsed Redmon was in the box straining to defecate. He was straining so hard he began to vomit. I rushed him to the er, he was treated for constipation. But it wasn’t resolving, we took more radiographs. He wasn’t full of stool. So why was he straining?! We did a full abdominal ultrasound. He has a large mass just below his bladder on his colon, pushing on it making him feel like he has to poop. We scanned the full abdomen found several more masses including one on the liver. He had free fluid in his abdomen, his doctor was able to get a sample of the fluid. The cytology came back… cancer. I had a consult with an oncologist. Unfortunately the type of cancer he has chemotherapy alone won’t touch it. He would need surgery to resect the affected part of his intestines and colon,
then chemotherapy to try to shrink the other tumors. He is now in the “making him comfortable” stage. I’m doing my best, giving his meds as prescribed. But I know I am going to have to make the call any day now. My boy deserves that, he deserves a peaceful transition.
My whole heart shattered in a matter of two weeks. Two freaking weeks and both my cats will be gone. It’s mind blowing and quite possibly the worst case scenario playing out.
