We got Cherokee about 2 years ago, he was skin and bones. We were told he was 20, but later found out he was 25+,which didn't matter to us, FIL wanted something to baby, and he was one of 2. But Cherokee was the special one. He needed the most help. BJ, was skinny, but not near as bad. These 2 ad been together for 10 years or so.
Friday morning poor Cherokee choked and aspirated on is breakfast. Vet said there as little we could do t his age. Jut make him comfortable. Poor baby did tonight. He was happy, he ate supper (something he had not done since Friday). But 3 hours later died in his stall. My 16 yr old heard what she thought was kicking in the stall, so she called my FIL to go with her to the barn (In the back yard, but I have not fixed the light yet). She found him in his stall. How do you get that picture out of a 16 yr olds mind? Not only that, but today was my first day at work, so she was alone at or hours until I got home.

I am so sorry about Cherokee, Cathie. It is always hard to lose a pet. I am glad that he had a much better life with your family these last two years.

I remember going out to the barn with my dad one morning and finding one of our boys dead in his stall. Its not something you ever forget, especially when you see them working to get a 1400 lbs+ horse out of the barn. I was six.

I hope that your daughter manages ok. Hugs to you and your family.

Ahhhhh, bless his heart. Thank you for loving and caring for Cherokee these last few years. Every soul deserves to be babied and loved. Especially during the end of life phase. I am so sorry that your daughter had to face the finding him. Run free, Cherokee! With the wind in your mane and love in your heart. Run free! You were so loved--and that is everything.
