Romeo ear issues continue. HELP!

I am having to take Romeo back to the vet after I get paid on Wednesday. His left ear is hot to the touch and is causing him pain and discomfort. He has alot of dark discharge in there also. My daughter and I cleaned his ears yesterday and today the left ear is already filthy. His stomach issues have been solved finally. He has really bad Food Allergies! My vet switched his food over to Hill's Ideal balance since it is all 100% Natural and Hypoallergenic. He eats both the wet and Dry. I get the dry Kitten formula since he is still a Kitten. Ever since the switch we have not had a single stomach upset, vomit, gasiness, G.I. tract infection, soft poo or diarrhea. He immediately had firmer poos once the switch began, which with other foods would normally make him sick with the G.I. track infections and severe diarrhea. Also the redness he had in his skin has gone away. He is also a little more calmer now too. Now we have the stomach and food issues solved now we have to get his ear issues also solved. This is the first time he has had pain inside his ears and let it be known. He won't let you touch his ear now and is shaking his head. Normally with a bacterial and yeast infection in his ears he will be begging for ear rubs to sooth the itchiness from them. I know now we are dealing something different cause his ear is hot and is causing him pain. I am afraid to bath him now and to clean his ears until he goes to the vet. Does anybody here have any advice or suggestions on what I can do to help alleviate some of his pain and make him more comfortable until he goes to the Vet?

Poor Romeo. I am glad you have the food portion all sorted out. Quite often ear issues are part of food allergies. Hopefully as time goes on his ear issues will resolve since the allergy seems to have been resolved.

I would take him back to the vet. Ask about eat issues as they relate to food allergies.

I'm sorry that I have no advice for you, only sympathies for poor Romeo! Please let us know what the vet says Thursday (or maybe you can ask the vet whether you can take him in now & pay Thursday?).
I hope he feels better soon!

Get better soon. Loki has chronic ear issues but they are related to his seasonal allergies. He was digging at his ear yesterday and so I swabed it out and got out a big old goo ball. During the worst times I clean his ears a couple times a week with zymox ear cleaner. If he is having build up like now. I use the treatment for a week to get them cleared up bit it is cycle and has been for years.

Hope he gets better soon, if cats are anything like dogs the ear issues are very likely linked to the food allergies,

My French bulldog is very allergic to chicken, i found out the hard way ended up getting a lot of bumps on him, and his ears had lots of waxy build up.

This is the first time he has had pain inside his ears and let it be known. He won't let you touch his ear now and is shaking his head. Normally with a bacterial and yeast infection in his ears he will be begging for ear rubs to sooth the itchiness from them. I know now we are dealing something different cause his ear is hot and is causing him pain. I am afraid to bath him now and to clean his ears until he goes to the vet. Does anybody here have any advice or suggestions on what I can do to help alleviate some of his pain and make him more comfortable until he goes to the Vet?

Hey, Lindsay, sorry that the cutie pie Romeo is suffering like that with his ear.
I would think that applying heat on his ear would help him. One remedy is taking some coarse salt on a sheet of Reynold's Wrap and placing it in the oven to heat up. Then wrap it well in the Reynold's Wrap and take a dish towel and wrap it around the aluminum foil and keep it in place with a few rubberbands. If it feels the right temperature to you, place it on his ear (the base front and back).

What do you normally clean his ears with and how often? Also, what have you used as far as medication in his ear when it's bad?
Does he have a very oily face and head?
My Liam has the oiliest head and face out of my three boys and I find that if I keep up with wiping his face down once a day, his ears stay cleaner. Otherwise, he's got the dirtiest ears out of my three boys with black gunk galore!
I wouldn't clean his ears too often. I clean ears once a week here, but I know that Liam used to need it more often. So when I did Liam's ears more often when he was younger, I tried not to do a big cleaning, just a little clean-up before the week was up when he'd be due for a regular ear cleaning.
I do not get water in my boys' ears when I'm bathing them. Then the first thing I do when I wrap them in a towel after their bath is dry the ears very well as the rest of their body is wrapped in a towel.
Being that Romeo's ear is hot now and he's shaking his head, he's in real bad shape and so uncomfortable. The heat tells me it's very inflamed and infected. Sounds like he needs an antibiotic asap. Maybe even a topical one as well as an oral one.

The only appointment that I could get him into with the schedule I had this week is at 9:30 this morning. I am getting wet brown gunk out of his ear right now and he cries when I try to get it out so he doesn't shake it out all over the place. It is literally coming out of his ear on the side. It is just gross. I clean his ears once a week with a medicated ear cleaner from the vet. When I had called the Vet up they said he may need daily ear cleanings or every other day ones to prevent him from getting ear issues. I will come back as soon as we are done at the vets office and let everybody know what is going on with this poor little handsome boy! Luckily He and my kids love each other.

Well Romeo's Vet visit today found more yeast in his ear and wax and yeast deep inside his ear. The vet said that if he is not better by his next visit and has his balance back that we may need to do a scan of his head and or put him under anesthesia so they can get a better and deeper look inside his ears to clean them deep inside where his build up is and to check for any issues that could be going on with his ears that can not be seen during an office examination. We are treating him with the same meds that we have always used on his ear infections. The vet is concerned about his balance issues that are causing him to have several falls a day. I am also planning on getting him microchipped sometime next week. We also covered heartworm, tick , flea and worm protection today and will getting him on Revolution soon as well. The best thing I like about Revolution is that it protects your pet from Fleas, Heartworms, Ticks, and worms. Even though he is an inside pet he is still at risk of those parasites since they can come in from open windows, cracks and doors.

Have you ever had severe problems with pets and parasites before that you are going to have Romeo on preventative protection? If Romeo got bit by a flea, you'd see a bite mark on him. If a tick attached itself, you'd see that too. I can't tell you what to do, but I would never put one of my indoor sphynx cats on any of these things.

It has been rough seeing his bruises from his falls. He has never had issues with his balance until this ear infection. We think it is due to the infection in his ears right now. I have had very bad experiences with inside cats and parasites and learned that inside cats are just as much at risk for fleas, ticks, heart worms and other worms as outside pets are due to the parasites themselves being able to get inside your home either by a host or on their own free will threw open doors, open windows and cracks . Just because your pet is an inside pet does not mean that they are safe from those threats. Heart worms is a Killer and often not diagnosed in time to save the pets life. That's why it is important to have them on a preventative program year round. I have had inside cats before as a kid that were not protected and regretted it due to them getting worms, fleas, ticks and one heart worms. Mosquitos carry heart worms and mosquitos get in your home during the summer months. After What I went threw in the past I refuse to not have my pets protected against those threats. Their lives are more important to me. Heart worms is very expensive to treat and That's one expense I want to avoid for sure. Sorry if that came out harsh as I did not intend for it to come out that way. I was trying to explain it the best I could and when I reread it I was like oh my I sound defensive but really I am not .

Well I took Romeo in for his ear recheck today and both my vet and I agreed that Romeo needs a few more days of treatments with his ears. We are not where we want to be yet with his ears. Since I got him home he has been doing nothing but crying very deeply and loudly. He has also been getting into my face some. Hmm? Sounds like it could certainly be his anal glands. The vet should have checked on them while Romeo was there. I'm not good at expressing anal glands. My vet of almost 30 years retired last year and years ago he showed me how to do it, but for some reason I'm not good at it.

That's what I am pretty sure it is. He has been crying all day. He wasn't showing any signs or symptoms of his anal glands needing to be expressed before I took him to the Vet and while were in there. It all started not long after I got him home. I am going to call my Vet in the morning and get him in to be seen Wednesday when I get paid. I will drop him off in the morning on my way to work and then pick him up in my way home since I am also going to get him microchipped that day. I have to clean his ears twice a day now and today hasn't been working so well for that with him. He is so whinney. My son keeps asking me whats wrong with him. I keep telling him that he is not feeling very well.

I work for 4 veterinarians at a low cost minor medical clinic. Since we are in Florida we see so many ear infections it's ridiculous. Over cleaning can cause ear infections also bathing and not protecting the ear from the water that gets in there is also an issue. I recommend putting something in the ear during bath time and limiting cleanings all together not to sound gross but I always compare pet ears to female areas (I'm also a surgical tech in the military) over cleaning destroys the healthy bacteria letting bad bacteria fester and cause infection. I don't know what the vet is giving you but most full service vet clinic will exhaust minor medications so you keep coming back for stronger medications. My vets usually give antibiotic injections (because good luck trying to pill a cat everyday) and that's it. Convenia is usually their antibiotic injection of choice it is pricy but gets the job done. If your baby isn't overweight then the injection should not cost too much. Also they may recommend a steroid injection to help with itching if that's also a problem. But I'm not a vet just giving some advice. I hope it clears up ear infections can be chronic in some pets I hope that's not the case with your non fur baby! Good luck!
