Romeo's Vet Ear recheck

Romeo went back to the vet today to get his ears rechecked. They are a little better but still need a few more days of treatment. He has been restless the last two nights and not eating well, so she rechecked his anal glands as well. Turned out He was jammed pack full AGAIN and had to get them expressed again. She told me to start giving him a small amount of pumpkin daily to help firm up his stools some and that it would express his glands for him. She said that giving that to him daily will either prevent or prolong the need to express them again. He just had his anal glands expressed on March 23rd. This time it also made him sick with a tummy ache. He wouldn't sleep at all last night from the discomfort and refused to eat this morning even after he vomited stomach fluid. I also learned something new today, which is animals can also have ADHD. Romeo has ADHD. I never knew they could have it. I just thought it only pertained to us humans. After I was told he had it all his anxiety and behavior began to make sense. My brother's Sphynx does not act no where near like Romeo does. I asked my Vet again if I could put him back onto Science Diet Kitten. I was told no, but being that the cans of the Hill's Prescription are $1.72 a can and the Science Diet kitten Cans of the same size are $1.00 a can I may still do it along with the pumpkin for his anal gland issues. Poor little guy has a very red bottom right now. If I do start giving him the Science Diet kitten food It will only be the wet food. I would also very very slowly wean him onto it. I will keep him on the Hill's Prescription I/D dry food since He loves it. He has a super sensitive stomach. What do you guys think I should do? Keep him on Hill's Prescription I/D both wet and dry or slowly wean him back onto Science Diet kitten wet food and keep him on the Hill's Prescription I/D formula dry food that he loves? I am also having major issues with the Dark blotches of dirt and oil build up on his stomach and creases in back inner legs. I literally scrub these spots and exfoliate them very well with his wash cloth at every bath and you still see the spots after the bath although immediately after the bath they are very faint but the next day they are dark again. I can't use exfoliating gloves on him due to his sensitive skin, but see now I may have no choice. Does anybody here have any advice on that? I also talked to my vet today about having him microchipped and found out it is only $35 for me to get it done verses me thinking it was going to cost me $300-600.

I hope the pumpkin does the trick. I would keep him on Hills because prescription food is very specialised and it's what your vet recommends. I'm sure the science diet wet is fine but definitely keep the special food for his all day grazing. As for his skin, are you sure it's not pigmentation. Can you share some pics? Gosh, I didn't know cats could get adhd too. As far as the food goes, idk if it was me, I'd tend to take the vet's advice 1st, and see how that works. If you do try the canned pumpkin, make sure its pure pumpkin & not pumpkin pie filling. Good luck

I didn't know animals could have ADHD either. It is a big surprise to me. I now understand why he looks like he is have a racing marathon in the apartment that nonestop until he drops down exhausted and passes out asleep. I will not take him off the Hills Prescription dry food. The wet food is what is killing me cause he doesn't really care for it much. He will eat some of it and leave it. Last night I mixed in some of his favorite flavor wet Science Diet Kitten salmon food into the I/D wet food and to my surprise he ate every drop of his wet food for the first time since the food change to the I/D food. I did the same this morning and he again ate all of it. He Likes the variety in flavors in his food.

I am going to go by the store tomorrow when I get off work to get him some pure pumpkin. I just am still unsure on how to give it to him and how much. She said a small amount, but wasn't pacific on it. I also don't know if I should give it to him plain or mix it into his food. He is on Hill's Prescription I/D formula food which is causing the issues with his anal glands. He has a sensitive stomach. If he continues with the problems with his anal glands I will have to change his food all together. I will never go raw since I actually know some people whose pets have died from eating raw and got sick from the bacteria and all that is found in meat that can make us sick as well.

I've never fed raw either. Too pricey & I worry about bacteria as well. Try offering the pumpkin alone if he likes it. If not, then you'll have to hide it in his wet food. I also noticed that his body heat is much warmer then it normally is. He feels like he is burning up. I am calling the vet in the morning and if need be Bring him back in when I get off work. The thing is he has a super super sensitive stomach and it does not take much to set it off in a severe way. I have a strong gut feeling that we are dealing with yet another G.I. Track infection. His stomach seems to be a little puffy too. He did eat all his wet food and pumpkin with I got home though.. I am so ready to scream. I just want him better and to stay well and it just seems like once we get him back on track he falls back down again.

It has gotten so severe that he smells like something died inside of him. I came home today to his litter box full of diarrhea and it all over my bed and his litter box smelling like something died in it. I also noticed that his body heat is much warmer then it normally is. He feels like he is burning up. I am calling the vet in the morning and if need be Bring him back in when I get off work. The thing is he has a super super sensitive stomach and it does not take much to set it off in a severe way. I have a strong gut feeling that we are dealing with yet another G.I. Track infection. His stomach seems to be a little puffy too. He did eat all his wet food and pumpkin with I got home though.. I am so ready to scream. I just want him better and to stay well and it just seems like once we get him back on track he falls back down again.

Gosh, yes a visit to the vet is a must. I don't know if you've taken him yet since this last post. I'll be praying they get to the bottom of this issue. Poor lil' thing. Keep us posted.

I had to take Romeo yet again to the Vet today for the Severe Diarrhea. My Vet agrees with me that there is a issue here that must be gotten to the root of in order to get him on track and to stay on track. She noticed the moment she came in the room that he was not well at all due to him not wanting to get out of his carrier. He normally runs around the room meowing in there. She did say that there are two tests that need to be ran on him to get to the root of this, but we have to wait until I have the money in order to get those tests done. One is to check for any kind of bacteria that could be anywhere in his intestines and stomach that we may be missing. The other test is to check for food allergies. We think he may have a food allergy. Over all to get both tests done it will cost me around $700-775 for both tests. I think we may try the Hypoallergenic food first. I just hope that I can come up with that money fast to get those tests done. I am on a budget. I gave him his first doses of meds today and so far from both the Antibiotics and the Probiotics He is feeling much better. He is back to jumping on the bird cage, running his marathons in the apart, licking me, and playing again after stopping all that on Sunday. It is good seeing him get back to normal again. I missed my boy being himself.

Thank You. Today he is looking even better. I am going to save the money up to get the needed 2 tests done soon so we can get the answers we need in order to get him well and to stay well. Does anybody know of any hypallergenic feline food brands? Does any of them have a hypoallergenic food for Kittens?

Sorry to hear that Romeo has stomach and anal gland issues. I hope the pumpkin helps him. As I told you recently, Lindsay, one of my miniature poodles is always having to have her anal glands expressed. I was told that the more you do it, the more it needs to be done, but at least her glands land up expressing themselves, but slowly. Maybe her high fiber food helps with that, idk.

It really seems to me that you have made up your mind to get Romeo back on his canned food he likes. Just do it very, very slowly and add the pumpkin. Time will tell if he can handle it. You'll know within a few weeks or so. Of course, keep him on the Rx dry food as you planned to anyway. You are miserable with the cost of the Rx canned and Romeo is miserable because he likes his variety of canned food too. Just do it little by little because I know how badly you want him to go back to his old canned food.

As far as the dark spots on him ... have you tried coconut oil? That will help remove the dark spots without scrubbing his sensitive skin. It might even help to keep those spots cleaner in the long run. Just try using it in those stubborn areas where he gets such brown spots. I found that overall my cats are cleaner (less sticky too) without the coconut oil...but I do use it to remove certain brown spots from time to time.

I would tell you to take his temperature, but he may not let you and I certainly wouldn't want you to aggravate his anal glands. I really wish that you can suggest to your vet for her to give him Flagyl for a few days at least. She can give you the tiny little blue pills which you can disguise into a small piece of American Cheese or a pill pocket. I'd even suggest a shot of Pepcid. It would make him feel so much better right away. I really think something is going on from the way you described the smell. That's how I know the difference here between the occassional diarrhea to "something is really wrong"...not to mention Romeo sounds like he has a fever.
Your vet is very nice from everything you've told me about her, but sometimes, Lindsay, we have to speak up and ask questions even if it means questioning how they are treating our baby's symtoms. I've learned to speak up about my health, my family's health to doctors, etc. and now I speak up about my pet babies. Just because a doctor for humans and a doctor for animals went to school to learn about treating ailments, etc., that doesn't make them God. You know your pet better than anyone else.

I might have the letters mixed up but it is a fairly extensive fecal panel. Tests for more than a basic fecal and is expensive. Might be worth a try.
