Round 2 ... Questions

Hello, I hate to be a burden and asking questions again, but I am once again confused. Newton started on raw food and did really well on it as a kitten. However, due to time, I took him off the raw food. He has gained so much weight it isn't healthy. My other cat, Menu, (Me-new), has never been on the Raw Food but he ate it tonight for the first time and seemed to like it, although he didn't eat his full serving. That brings me to my question... How much should I be feeding these guys.

Today, I got my shipment of 15 lbs of meat from Hare Today Goon Tomorrow. 5 lbs rabbit and 10 lbs chicken. I, of course, added the Alnutrin supplement to the meat and prepared it correctly, 5 scoops per 5 lb. I divided it up into ziplock bags in 1/2 cup per bag. I was thinking of feeding them a bag twice a day.

Hare Today, while a great product, is expensive for my teacher/graduate student budget. So, I've been thinking of switching to Better In the Raw and purchasing meat from my local markets. I was watching the video on BITR website and they said an average full grown cat needs half a cup a day which was .25 pound a day. I've been feeding mine approximately a cup a day. So, should I change mine to one zip-lock bag a day (each has 1/2 cup) or continue feeding 1/2 cup in morning and 1/2 cup in th eevening.

We are not raw feeders but I know @susi794 is - Perhaps she will chime in to help.

i feed BITR and i feed for my Cats weight.
My 10 lbs cat gets about 5 to 6 ounes a day plus treats .
My 8 months old gets about 6 ounces or 7 a day plus treats.
they do say 3% to 4 % of their body weight thats what the feeding should approx be.
I bag my meat in 2 ounce bags and they get each one , 3 times a day .

Day 2 completely raw. Both are eating well. Cleaned litter boxes which I have discovered they have made one box a pee only box and one a poo only box. Ill be interested to see how their poos are looking in a few days.

Things are going well however they act like they are starving. I know they are eating about 8 oz. of food a day plus afternoon snack. Need snack ideas! Why are they acting so hungry like manic. I guess they are detoxing from the kibble cat crack

Typically, raw food is fed as a percentage of your cat's current weight, usually 2% or 3%. So, convert your cat's weight from pounds to ounces, then multiply that by either .02 or .03 to calculate how much you should be feeding your cat per day.

If your kitty weighs 8 pounds, then the math looks like this:
8lbs x 16 = 128oz
128 x .02 = 2.56oz of food per day (or 128 x .03 = 3.84oz of food per day)

Multiply the daily amount by 7 to get a week's total.
2.56oz x 7 = 17.92oz of food per week (or 26.88oz of food per week)

Now, take that weekly total and break it up by 80% / 10% / 5% / 5% to determine how much of the weekly ratio is meat, bone, liver and organ respectively.

So an eight pound cat fed at 2% of his body weight should receive 14.34oz of meat, 1.79oz of bone, .9oz of liver and .9oz of organ every week.

They will act hungry, just like we do.....they are used to all the carbs from the dry food. But if you stick to it, they will adjust.

I don't want to start another thread so hopefully my thread will be seen. I'm getting down to the end of the month's supply on food. I really like Hare Today's product. However, I am not sure if it has all the needed "goods" to keep the cats healthy. I do add the Alnutrin to their food. Is the Hare Today already in the appropriate ratio? If not would it be wise to buy BITR and add it to the Hare Today product?

Also, my cats literally eat their food in about 30 seconds!! I hope I'm feeding them enough. They get half a cup twice a day.

I'm not sure what is in the product you are buying, but I make my own raw food so I know that they need
approximately 85% muscle meats, 10% liver or other offal, 5% bone.

Note that heart and stomach are muscles. It is hard to find organs other than liver (I've never accomplished it, anyone has advice let me know!).

Clementine REALLY likes the Better In The Raw. I had her on the Nature's Variety raw medallions, but that too is pretty expensive. She actually likes the BITR stuff MORE, and now if I give her a medallion, she wont finish it. I get the 85/15 ground turkey to make BITR with at the local grocery store.

I know this sounds really stupid, but is there such things as 2 oz bags or are you just measuring out 2 oz and putting it in a regular zip loc bag?

actually there is a smaller Size then a Sandwich bag, i think its called "snack" size ??
I do use reg sandwich bags though and put 2 oz in it and take as much air out and smush it flat, it freezes quick and also thaw's out quick.
