It is with a sad hear that I must tell my Sphynxlair friends that my beloved Cookie passed away Saturday morning. Cookie escaped out of the house Friday night and I couldn't get him back in the house. Early Saturday morning I found him on the back deck and saw that he was hurt badly. He had been hit by a car we think. We rushed him to the vet's and he appeared to be stabilizing. However at 6:30 am I got a call from the vet and she said he had taken a turn for the worst. Th decision was made later that morning to put him to sleep as there was not chance of recovery.

Cookie was only nine months old and I had him in my life for only 5 months. I feel like I failed Cookie and the breeder. I failed to protect Cookie as I should have. I betrayed the trust the breeder placed in me. The guilt is enormous.

Cookie was my first Sphynx and I would have done anything to save him. He brought joy and light to my life with his antics. I loved him through and through. I am so sorry, Cookie. I miss you. Please forgive me.

OOOh you have me crying with you. Please know you are not a failure. Your loss is huge...and your heart is heavy. It was an accident...you did not want this to happen. We have been lucky that our 3 kitties have not shown an interest with being near us by the door when we leave/come in. We just got our baby less than 2 weeks ago and last weekend I hissed at her to move away from the door because i got nervous. Your story just made me get up and go into the other room to tell hubby that from this day forward...we need to make a promise to NEVER exit the door unless all cats are clear of the hallway before our bathroom door. You did make a difference in sharing your story tonight. Hugs to you.

I am so sorry you lost your poor Cookie. I can only imagine what you are going through. Don't blame yourself. It's not like you let him outside on purpose. These guys can be pretty quick a s sneaky.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Hugs

I agree with Patti, telling your story may save other lives...
Cookie is across the Rainbow Bridge--maybe even snuggling with an angel right about now. It was an accident. Cookie knew he was loved, or he wouldn't have made his way back to your deck after he got hurt. I'm so sorry he couldn't be saved, but thank you for giving him the last gift there was to give and helping him ease across the Bridge--where there is no more pain or suffering.
RIP Cookie, you were loved--and that is everything.

=(

We are lucky that we have an entry with two doors- one into the main entry... then another into the house. Since we got Neenee, we always keep the main house door closed so we have a 'buffer' area.

She usually doesn't care about the door, but once or twice has run for it and squeezed by but was not able to get out because of the second door.

I can't imagine the stress of not having that buffer as cats are super quick when they want to be.

You poor thing!

So sorry for your loss  RIP Cookie.

Please don't blame yourself. From your post I can tell you are not a bad pet owner, and accidents happen, it is just such a shame that this accident had such a tragic outcome.

Agree with Patti too. I don't think I was being careful enough when leaving my apartment and this will definitely change after reading your story

I am so terribly sorry that this has happened. I feel bad for Cookie, but he's out of pain now. I feel so bad for you as you are beating yourself up terribly. Please realize that you didn't put him out of your house and into traffic. I know you must feel awful on so many levels.

You have nothing, to be ashamed of, If you had a choice, it would
not have happened. He was loved, wanted, and had a good home.
That's what matters. Bless You.

I will pray for you to get through this tough time. I lost my kitten right before I got Lucy, she was a hair cat but left us in an accident I will never forget and still feel like it was my fault. Even though it wasn't. Hang in there sweetie. We are all here if you ever want to talk about your sweet baby.

So very sorry for your loss, but it truly wasn't your fault. They're called accidents because you didn't intend for it to happen.

omg I am so sorry and please stop blaming yourself!
Cats get out!!! even when we are careful they get out! it doesn't mean you aren't a good pet owner and it doesn't mean you didn't love your cat. You are not letting anyone down.
In the last 5 years, Nofuratu has escaped once and Vladimir 3 times! I live with 3 teenagers...well now just two teens so that should explain the large number of escapes despite my nagging and threatening the human children about doors!
Even when you are careful they can run out in a flash, in a split second when you blink and if you miss it or don't realise or cant catch them in time.....
Last year I caught Count actually opening the screen on the window with his claw enough to get his head out! We had to put wooden dowels on all the sliding screens and were so fortunate to catch him doing it.
Another helpful thing is to have a screen door on top of your regular door......
it helps slow down an escape. We lost our screen door this year and Ive been worried sick since that's how Nofur got out. Its an extra door to catch a tail in.....but does help with cats darting out.
I think a lot of us have sphynx that go out on a leash and we all know as soon as spring fever hits, they are wailing to get out and milling around the doors and even when you are careful they are smart curious cats!
Please stop blaming yourself. We don't know why things happen but accidents do happen. Your Cookie would not want you beating yourself up on top of grieving.
Now is a good time for everyone to check their windows and doors. If you have a door that doesn't close well or is easy to leave ajar....these cats are smart!!!!

How heartbreaking   I'm so sorry. I hope you know it's not your fault at all. You would've done anything for Cookie to be alive right now. I'm so sorry this happened but he had a good life and you showed him so much love in the time he was with you which is what matters. Thinking of you and wish I could hug you right now. I'm so sorry. RIP Sweet boy Cookie.

:Sad, knikwit as others mentioned please do not blame yourself too long. Otherwise it will haunt you . It is as it is. When you are ready make a note from you to Cookie and put it in a beautifull little box, lit a candle and burn some incense if you want. I have a little corner and make my Altar, have it for years now. It is a place, to lit a candle for my moment with beloved ones. Maybe this will help you through the heavy time you're going threw. But hope you can give it a place. Please keep us updated how you are.

I am crying for you sweetie. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I'm wrapping little Cookie in warm peaceful thoughts, and asking my friends across the rainbow bridge to welcome him. You're not a bad mama, you gave him love and, at the end, peace.

Im crying as I type this because it is just so terribel. I really am going to pray hard that you dont continue to blame yourself for your sweet boys passing. Sometimes awful things happen to us for no reason at all and you are not a failure. Hang in there  I know how hard it is
