Saphira is sick! Vet tomorrow!

She's my first cat and she's just a kitten. I'm scared to death. She was a little sniffly for a few days but yesterday she started having thick discharge from her eyes and sneezing and hacking up mucus that came out of her nose. I made an appointment to get in as soon as possible, which is tomorrow morning at 10:30.

She's still got energy and I would not call her lethargic. She's eating and drinking. She's sleeping now and I opened her eyes and I do not like what I see. It is red and inflamed. Her breathing is loud but closed mouth. She just turned 8 months. You guys think she can pull through this? Has anyone seen anything like this before? If you have faith in any religion, can you please say a prayer for my little princess Saphira?

Sending lots of healing vibes. You can try clean her eyes with boiled water (cooled off) on a cotton ball. As long as she keeps eating and drinking and doesn't get lethargic I guess you and your girl will be fine till the vet visit tomorrow. If she gets worse I would go to an emergency vet.

@Toa and Ross I called today to see if anything opened up just in case. The tech said to steam her in the bathroom. I've been doing that. It has given her relief momentarily but I know it isn't a fix.

Sounds like a bad cold. They will probably need to put her on antibiotics but cats usually heal up just fine with help.

@NakieCatMom oh no that’s awful what’s happened she was running around like crazy and then this suddenly came on. Has she been in contact with another cat?

It’s most likely a URI and they will get her on an antibiotic for a fix. Please update us on how it goes and what med is given. Your experience will help others in the future.

@pussiette Yes. She was very hyper and energetic and then she started sneezing a little bit for a couple days and then this happened. She is still being sassy but is sick and resting a bit more than usual.

@pussiette Not yet. The soonest I could get in is 10:30 in the morning tomorrow and I called on Monday. She looks and sounds horrible but I am sure she's going to make it to her appointment. She's eating and drinking and while she is a little sleepy, she is definitely not lethargic. This is my first major cat sickness so I am so scared for my baby. She can barely open her eyes they are so covered in mucus.

Get a nice warm wet cloth to wipe away the gook. Make sure the rag and water are very clean.

@Toa and Ross Yeah but there is another problem. I had to bring the vaccination records in because for some reason they didn't have them recorded in the computer and they have reason to suspect that the breeder falsified her vaccination records so she may be unvaccinated. Once she feels better, I have to take her in for all sorts of tests and then pretty much every vaccination under the sun. As it stands right now, it looks like I have an unvaccinated 8 month old kitten!

@NakieCatMom glad you got Saphira to the vet. hugs n feel better head smooches. as for vaccines, some are not recommend for sphynx. as noted , many breeders contracts are void if FIP or Feline Leukemia vaccine given. deep breath, you got this. my first sphynx came with shady info. I did not do every vaccine on the planet and did not do the two mentioned.

what are all the tests? they want to do?

@Yoda mom Well, it's my fault for not looking at the vaccination records better. It said that she was given vaccinations in middle of August and I picked her up on August 25th so that makes sense. However, it also said on the paper that she was given more vaccinations in September but that's impossible because I had her all throughout September.

Her rabies shot was given to a domestic shorthair, which she obviously isn't. when the vet tech called the breeder to ask about the vaccinations, the breeder, according to the vet tech, was acting shady and at first tried to deny even selling me a kitten.

They are very worried about feline leukemia in particular and they want to do a test and then vaccinate her for it. They also want to give her a heartworm test and put her on preventives... but she is never outside and I live in Wisconsin and it is winter right now.

This is the first I'm hearing of certain vaccines voiding a contract. Can someone please educate me on which vaccines should and should not be given to this breed? Why on Earth would you not vaccinate for feline leukemia? The vet tech put the fear of God in me when it came to that! Does it matter that she is technically a Donskoy and not a Sphynx?

so very sorry you are having this experience with your sweet Saphira. tagging @Catzzzmeow for more info on the vaccines. deep breathe, one thing at a time. yes, I have had techs put the fear of God in me too. ultimately it is my decision what I decide on for my babies.

She was given Mometamax for a yeasty buildup in her ears, Cerenia nasal drops for congestion, Doxycycline for the overall secondary infection, and Terramycin for the irritation to her eyes and the mucus in her eyes.

I know there has been a post on which vaccines to use and not use - but I am at work and in a hurry. Dinka is at the vet this morning for his neuter. The tech said he has not had his leukemia vaccine. I told her that I would have to get back with her on that. Do I vaccinate?:Dizzy:

Gollum experienced something similar, but it was when i first got him at 10 weeks.

the vet put him on some meds and eye drops to reduce the inflammation and worked perfectly.

@gollumthesphynx Thanks! She ended up eye cream, nose drops, a liquid antibiotic, and ear drops for overgrown yeasty buildup. She does have feline herpes and I guess this is just a secondary infection from that. She will probably have a few of these flare-ups throughout her life but at least I know what they are.

You must be feeling so many emotions.

Is your breeder a registered sphynx breeder with a cat governing body?

Cat governing bodies have rules and obligations that breeders have to fulfil and if there is a chance you feel that the vaccination records or paperwork were falsified then this is an issue that also falls under basic consumer rights as well as the governing cat body.

I have found in these circumstances while it’s difficult to step up and make enquiries to cat bodies and consumer rights department even anonymously it helps because you are helping this to stop happening to other cats and cat buyers.

You don't need every vaccination under the sun, just these 2 vaccines (assuming she really didn't get them):
1. FVRCP - this covers 3 viruses - herpes, calici and panleukopenia (distemper)
2. Rabies

Most people recommend against the FeLV vaccine. Here is what Dr. Lisa Pierson has to say about it:

FeLV is NOT highly contagious and its transmission requires prolonged intimate (i.e., sharing food/water, mutual grooming) contact with an infected cat. Natural immunity is very strong in most cats by the age of 1 year. AAFP guidelines suggest vaccinating all kittens but the vaccine is recommended in adults only if they will be in contact with a known FeLV positive cat – which would be a very rare situation.​

I disagree with the recommendation to vaccinate all kittens. None of my own cats have ever been vaccinated for FeLV – not even as kittens – since they reside indoors and will not be in contact with a FeLV positive cat.​

My suggestions:​

​

Do not vaccinate kittens for FeLV unless your kitten is going to be outside (rarely a safe place to be for any kitten or cat) or is going to be housed with an FeLV positive kitten or cat.​

​

Do not vaccinate adult cats for FeLV – even if they have access to the outdoors – since natural immunity to this disease is very strong by the time the cat is ~1 year of age. If an adult cat is going to be living with a FeLV positive cat, then vaccination should be considered.​

Also don't let the vet give any adjuvanted vaccine. Don't allow any vaccines in the scruff area.

My cats don't take any "preventives" .....hey I'd be first in line if there was a "preventive" for cancer or kidney disease or heart disease, but until then I have to pass. I mean they live indoors with me.....am I supposed to take "preventives" too? LOL. Just say not to anything that doesn't have a clear purpose for YOUR kitten and YOUR circumstances.

@Condo commando Very good advice! I appreciate that more than you could ever understand. FVRCP... she must not have gotten that because she has herpes.

And now I understand why the breeder told me to keep her out of social situations like pet stores until she is at least a year old. It was probably to avoid the leukemia. Where should the vet administer the shot if not in the scruff?
