Not necessarily. I have one with herpes and another one with calici. These viruses are common in communal living situations like a cattery. Kittens are exposed before they get vaccinated. It is what it is but it's not the end of the world.

And now I understand why the breeder told me to keep her out of social situations like pet stores until she is at least a year old. It was probably to avoid the leukemia. Where should the vet administer the shot if not in the scruff?

In the tail is the best place in case that there is a sarcoma at the injection site, they can just amputate the tail. Remember, no adjuvanted vaccines. The gold standard one is the Merial PureVax vaccine.

The Merial ones are not are they? This is my understanding but my cats no longer get any vaccines at their age and considering they are indoors only.

For what it's worth, I think vets have come around on this subject. I remember years ago when I got cats I had to call around to find a vet that would agree to see them if they were not given the annual rabies booster. Then, it became "we will examine them but you can't board them here if you have to go out of town." Now they don't bat an eye.....at least in my area but it's a big city and there are a lot of other vets to choose from.

I’m not familiar with the animal vaccines specifically. What I can tell you is that I can’t think of a human vaccine without them. They are considered “necessary to elicit an appropriate immune response.” The one they get a lot of flack for is aluminum. They say it is necessary to stimulate the immune response, but it does so much damage that in my opinion it is not worth it.

@Sheldon13 Does the fact that I have dogs change anything? They go outside and could potentially drag something in with them. Saphira is very close with them and is rarely far away from them, as they're her friends.

I highly doubt it. There is a possibility that they could carry in a flea or something that had bitten a cat with illness but it’s unlikely. And there are very few pathogens that are shared by the two species.

The vet tech told me feline leukemia can be spread by as little as a touch or breathing close to an infected cat. She scared me so much I held Saphira and cried for hours. They want her tested and acted like she could already be dying.

So my vet's office gave me misleading information, it seems. I could see how there would be situations where getting this vaccine would be an excellent idea but for Saphira, an only cat and an indoor cat that isn't boarded or sent to a groomer's or anything... I don't know if this vaccine is worth the potential risk.

When she feels better, I will take her for her core shots and her rabies shot but I think I am sold on the idea that the leukemia shot is not ideal.

I would suggest you spend some time doing some research and get comfortable enough to make a decision you can be confident in. There is no need to rush this, so don’t feel like it’s an emergency.

I didn’t have a choice on my Sphynx because I adopted her from a shelter so they had given her everything already. I would probably not have chosen for her to get all of them. She has since passed. My current cat, one I adopted from outdoors (she was a community cat) still goes outside some, so I chose to get the entire list of them because there is a large feral population. I am working on convincing her that inside is where it’s at, and if she stops wanting outside at times I will stop getting her boosters.

It’s all about your personal circumstances.

@Toa and Ross Yeah but there is another problem. I had to bring the vaccination records in because for some reason they didn't have them recorded in the computer and they have reason to suspect that the breeder falsified her vaccination records so she may be unvaccinated. Once she feels better, I have to take her in for all sorts of tests and then pretty much every vaccination under the sun. As it stands right now, it looks like I have an unvaccinated 8 month old kitten!

Oh yikes, what a scare to find out these kind of things. Hopefully the test show what is going on. Sending positive vibes your way

@NakieCatMom adorable pic above. I have 4 dogs and nakids... oldest sphynx 10 yrs old., I personally don't over vaccinate and no issues to date. there are several stray cats in the area that come visit too.


like @Sheldon13 research to make an informed decision. and remember the vet works for you. ultimately your decision on vaccines, tests etc.

She is bright eyed and energetic. She only wheezed once yesterday. She's back to her crazy antics that started just before she got sick. She's racing across the apartment at top speed, hunting the unsuspecting dogs, getting into trouble, and being the best cat ever!
