Last night around 11:45, my wonderful, weird, sweet and sassy four year old baby Cactus succumbed to a battle with heart disease. She fought bravely but eventually she just couldn't do it any more, and now she's at rest. My heart has a hole that I don't think will ever heal. If anyone would understand, you guys would... These aren't just cats, they're odd little people that speak a different language.
She used to love it when we'd go to bed and I'd hold her like a teddy bear. She'd fall asleep in my arms and stay there all night, usually on top of or squeezed in next to her husband Ted.
The pair came to me as re-homes in 2010. They'd been abandoned at the vet by their original owner. She had purchased them as a breeding pair, and just dumped them upon learning that Ted was sterile. They had a rough start, but after being with a foster mom for a while they came to live with me.
There were times when I had nobody to run to, and my kitties were always there. There were times we were so broke that I went without meals, but the kitties always had everything they needed. They never lacked for anything. She was with me through some of the toughest times in my life, always with a loud purr and a sandpaper kiss.
Then, just about a month and a half ago, she got sick. She started wasting, getting skinnier and skinnier, and she had trouble walking and eating and breathing. Several visits to the doctor came up with IBD, then asthma, then lung cancer...all theories proving wrong. Her xrays showed some mild myocardia, and that her lungs were filling with fluid as a result. However, she just was too weak, and the heart medicine didn't have time to take effect. She was a champ.
Now, her husband and I have to find some way to cope. He's never been without her his whole life, and I worry for him. My heart is broken to pieces, but I at least have him to take care of and keep me going. Otherwise, I don't know how I could get out of bed.

Sounds like you lost a true best friend there! I am so so sorry!
