Shiloh & Skinny Sadie

Hello everyone,

Ever since I was younger and first heard of the sphynx breed I have wanted to have them. Finally in Octof 2010 my husband suprised me by telling me we were going to go pick up our first sphynx baby! I was so so so excited. We went and picked her up from a woman who lived a few hours away. When we saw her she looked a bit too thin, the woman assured me she was just petite. She said she had cleaned her well and she was ready to go. Sadie smelled of old perfume and on the drive home started to break out in small red bumps. When we arrived at home i washed her, she was filthy and her ears were so dirty that when i cleaned them for the first time a few spots bled, she was rather timid also. I noticed her gums were inflammed as well. I took her to a vet and they gave me an antibiotic for her gums and rancid breath, they said she was fine and only had a small cold. She is a year old and that seems too small, the vet said 4lbs when i took her in a few weeks ago. She is doing much better and is getting more social but is still very skinny. i dont know what to do. She came declawed in the fron, very sad and i dont agree with declawing. We purchased another sphynx girl from a different woman in November 2010, her name is Shiloh and she is healthy and very playful, curious, smart, and vocal. Her and Sadie get along great and both eat like little piggies! Shiloh isn't a year old yet and weighed 5.5lbs at the vet visit, unlike Sadie you cannot see ribs and her spine. I am just so worried about Sadie. Please help!!

If you can still see her ribs after this time you might want to get her back to the vet, she could have something seriously wrong. If she's eating normally and drinking she should have gained weight by now. Is she proportional? Small without bones showing? Or is she regular size but rail thin?

My Alice is about 5lb and she's almost two years old. She's very petitie so it does happen sometimes that they are just small. Alice always ate a lot and wasn't sick when she was little but she still ended up tiny, no one knows why. So you might just have a tiny Sphynx on your hands.

If your kitty is already a year old and you have had her at least 4 months you should see some weight gain at this point I would think. Obviously the beeder was a liar and nothing they say could be trusted. The vet I am sure did a good exam but probably you should make sure blood work was done and stool samples. Perhaps Sadie has something that could only be detected with a few tests.

If you had Sadie tested as well as a physical exam and everything came back ok I would say like Sianne_and_Alice said and consider you may just have a petite little darling on your hands but making sure she is medically sound is a must. It sounds like Sadie is in the right home and you are doing a wonderful job loving her into adulthood

Try feeding her some glop. You can find many recipes for it online. It is good for fattening them up.

Oh yes! I just recently saw a thread that had a GLOP recipe here on the Lair. That definitely sounds like a good thing to try for a thin girl. I must say, Sadie is lovely!

Hello Worriedowner and welcome to Sphynxlair! Sorry to hear of your troubles. I would see the vet once again to make sure there are no pesky parasites. Is her stool runny or very smelly above normal? vomiting? Welcome. There are lots of great people and information here. Maybe someone out there may have a answer for you or may have gone through the same experience . 4 pounds dose sound small. My boy is 2.5 years old and he is a lean 10.8 pounds.

Welcome to the Lair! I too would take her back to the vet and have a recheck just to make sure she is making positive progress. The GLOP sounds like a good idea as well. I hope she starts getting better.

You sound like a great Sphynx mommy. You should not be seeing any back bones or ribs. There should be enough muscle and fat over these body parts. Most Sphynx are not timid but very playful and want to be a part of there humans activities. It sounds like she came from a questionable breeder and I would take her back to the vet and get a blood panel, leukemia test and a thorough fecal exam. Your vet may be a great vet but may not be familiar with the breed. My vet takes time with me to explain everything in detail. Ask yor vet a lot of questions, why is she not gaining weight, she came from an unknown background and what diseases could she possibly have. Good luck with your sweet Sadie and let us know about her progress.

Welcome, Sounds like you probably saved this little one's life.
This lady doesn't need to be breeding anything sounds like
to me. Glad you got her. I think you should take her back to the vet.
Congrats on the second little girl also.
