Sick Kitten

So, I have only had my kitten for about a week now and he is sick. When he came home, he had a minor ear infection and was treated with ear gel and now his ears are A-OK. Well, this morning he was running about and eating, acting just fine. But this afternoon he was lethargic and last week the vet didn't suspect a URI but put in the charts to release an antibiotic (Clavamox) when/if she felt he needed it. Well, he was crying for about 20 minutes and just wouldn't let up. Didn't want any water, didn't want food, just wanted to be held. So, I picked it (antibiotics) up at around noonish time because I was worried that it was a URI and thought that that was what all the crying was about. Came home and administered the medication and he laid back down but ten minutes later got up and projectile vomited right next to his litter box. Anyway, I made an appt right away and he was seen a couple hours later. The vet (different than the vet he saw last week) did an ultrasound and tapped his belly; no fluids but he did have a slight fever that went away, while we were at the vet. She said everything looked good, she didn't think it was a URI, so stop giving the Clavamox because she suspects that this is what caused him to vomit. She ran a 'Cat Scan' full chem panel and took urine for a urinalysis (dip stick showed elevated ketones and protein) and we will know tomorrow what it could be. Do you guys think it is FIP? I am so scared and heartbroken and I feel so awful for him. He is just sleeping but is still eating and drinking and no bloated tummy but when he purrs it just breaks my heart because he is still giving so much love even though he feels unwell. It would just be my luck because we have the worst luck with animals.

it will explain, what, is going on. I pray, it's something, meds, can
take care of. Did this just start out of no where? Have you made any
changes at all? Could he have gotten into anything, to invest it.
Please keep us updated about your baby. I know your worried sick.

Try not to panic. We often see babies fell ill a week or so after coming home. Their immune system has not fully built up and yes many get upset tummies on antibiotics. Did you get in touch with your breeder for some extra support. She might have some feedback from the other litter mates etc. positive thoughts go your way no I will be looking for the update. If nothing shows in original testing, perhaps your vet can do a PCR test as it seems to help is diagnosing some things normal tests don't pick up. Just stay positive, it is natural to worry.

(Fwiw , I thought my Toby was very ill two weeks ago- he was lethergic amd sneezing , warm to touch , -etc vet said it was seasonal allergies she is seeing an influx in this month -
I would ask your vet is it possible allergies? He was put on allergy meds amd all cleared up -) in about a week

Firstly, thank you everyone for your positive thoughts and support. It means so much to me. It is so hard having such a rare breed, that vets have trouble diagnosing a fever and such. I talked to my vet this morning, (who by the way is wonderful and has been researching everything she can about Sphynx), and she said there is nothing too worrying on his chem panel. She said he was a little dehydrated and his white blood cell count was high. She wants him on Zithro and we will be emailing throughout the weekend, so she can keep up with how he is doing. She is thinking that it is a URI because he has been snotty and did have conjunctivitis. She said that if he isn't better by Monday than she wants to tap his belly again and do an X-ray but she his globulins weren't high so she doesn't really suspect FIP but just doesn't know. He kept me up all night running around like a crazy man and he is up now being nuts, so he is definitely feeling better and no longer has a fever. Thank goodness! I know i didn't jump the gun but man he sure makes me feel like I am losing my mind because yesterday seemed so touch and go. I am so thankful that he is feeling better though. He started eating more and drinking a ton, I guess he's making up for not eating and drinking much yesterday.

She remarked that it couldve just been the antibiotics and I think so too. The breeder has been keeping in touch, she is really worried but she hasn't had any issues with any of the litter mates or their new owners haven't said anything at least. The vet wants to do a PCR if he isn't any better by Monday. Thank you for the advice, it truly is helpful.

@GabbyJ Super news. If snotty and has been stressed, most likely it is a simple URI. If it does not clear, the PCR test would catch something like chlamydia which includes snotty nose and conjunctivitis, so personally I would do that rather than an x-Ray if the meds don't clear it up. Sounds like your vet is very interested about the breed and the welfare of your baby. Rest easier.

So, the kitten is fine. He is three days into his azithromyacin medication and is doing beautifully. Still a little snotty and sneezing some but overall, he is being a little hellion and having fun. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to spend much time with him because our dog suffered a spinal cord injury on Saturday and we have been gone since Sunday, basically. When it rain, it pours. Thank you all again for your support and good thoughts, I am beyond grateful that our kitten is doing so well, we love him so much.

Hello all. Sorry I haven't been on with an update, we've been so busy getting consults and MRI's and X-Rays for our dog. Turns out she has a bi-lateral ilipsoas tear and will be fine. She'll be on bed rest for about 4-6 weeks and doing laser treatments for about a month. I know this isn't a dog forum but sometimes it's hard to separate the two when so much is going on. The kitten is doing just fine, as a matter of fact, it's like he was never sick. He is on day 7 of his Azithromycin and is doing wonderfully. He had a bath today because he has had poopy butt and tail two days in a row and smelled like our boxers breath, yuck. She has a nasty habit of licking everything that she loves. Thank you again everyone for the kindness.

I used a lot of frozen filled black kongs and busy buddy chews ( personally ,I do not put in the rawhide ring it comes with )

@Yoda mom Thank you, we are so glad that he is better as well. Although, he is a tiny hellion now. I can't wait for him to be out of this biting stage, it is super painful, yikes!
Our poor pup is still in quite a bit of pain and on daily medication to keep it under control. The laser treatments are helpful but only for a few days. We are hopeful, that with time she will be back to her old self. This is the second time we've had a dog on bedrest, our oldest pup had a bi-lateral TPLO and he was kenneled for about 8 weeks. It was awful. Thank you for caring so much, it sure helps us move through this trying time knowing that other are thinking of us.

So, just an update. Our pup is doing a little better, able to stand up and walk on her own now. We lowered her dosage of pain medication because it's upsetting her stomach and making her vomit and she seems to be fine on the lower dosage along with her Gabapetin. I appreciate the outpouring of love and support. As for kitten, he still has no name and is still terrorizing everyone he can. We love him dearly! Here are some pictures of him from recently, he has gotten so big.

Him and my boxer have a love/hate relationship.

Yes, I understand about the gabapentin - use it for years here and also do better in lower dosage or splitting the dosage am/pm with approval from the vet-
I swear we have a whole shelf dedicated to pet pils! I write on the top of the bottle caps
" pain" , "anti- inflammatory , tummy , etc

Ask your vet too if peptobismol chewable hidden in cream cheese would help her tummy with the Gapaentin ?
Is she also on tramadol pain meds too? My dog got too loopy with both at once and we had to adjust accordingly
With vets instructions .

Ps-** Remember NO Ketamine for his upcoming castration
Bcz of potential rebound effect on the heart

I always ask for "ISO" Isoflurane gas or comparable

Were definitely enjoying it, especially since my dogs can't decide if they want to treat him like their baby or play with him. Then he bites them and they decide, play.
