So here is the crazy story of Smaug. Some of you may know that my little kitty Smaug has been very very sick for some time. I posted a while ago asking about diabetes, which ended up being a very bad diagnosis. I moved to a new vet which I also started working at. They diagnosed Smaug with pancreatitis but wouldn't know what was causing it until we got a ultrasound which we had scheduled for April 14th. Until then the goal was to have him stop losing weight and to start eating food. Overall he has lost 4 lbs. So this brings us to yesterday, which was also my birthday. I went to work as normal. In the morning I found out that the ultrasound vet was actually in town. However he had no openings. I shrugged it off knowing that Smaug had an appt with him eventually. Later in the day my vet rushed in saying that he had a cancellation and to go get Smaug. During the ultrasound they found something that was either a foreign body or a mass. She asked if she could operate immediately. I was very freaked out but knew that it could be the answer to many unanswered questions and most importantly could make my baby better. A was able to walk in and out of the procedure so I could see how it progressed. I while into the exploratory surgery they found something that looked very weird. I had no clue what it was. A bit later the vet pulled out more and more of this stuff. I finally realized that it was ribbon. Smaug had ate an intire spool of ribbon. That wasn't our biggest concern though believe it or not. The ribbon had cut through and made a hole in his intestion and had been leaking acid onto his pancreas. This was why his pancreas was acting up so badly. At the end of the procedure Smaug aspirated. The vet is pretty worried about infection. Overall though Smaug is now home on lots of great meds. Everything worked out as it was meant to. The vet said that if Smaug wouldn't have gotten the surgery he would have had a stroke over the weekend and died. I still have no idea how he got the ribbon. I couldn't ask for a better birthday gift though. Please pray that Smaug continues to heal with no infection or bumps in the road. We have already faced so much.

So Smaug is going OK. He is eating and drinking some. He's pretty sedated though with the meds. Might be TMI but Smaug has been having a very hard time producing a stool. He keeps going to the box, trying, leaving, then re-entering. He's still too weak to try. Hopefully he has one soon as he's getting very frustrated.

I would guess under the circumstances and meds should be expected. Tomorrow is a new day and being as Smaug has eaten and drank it is a good sign the output will happen tomorrow. Hope you are holding up after such a long day @nudieluvr

oh Smaug, you must be one of the luckiest cats on the planet! Most cats who eat ribbon, string or yarn do not survive as long as he did. I hope that this is a great turning point for him and that he will never have anything like this again! Our Cleopatra ate 32 inches of yarn when she was 11 months old and had to have a similar surgery as Smaug. The big difference was that it was very obvious that she had a blockage immediatly. You might want to try what we did when she came home. She had to be quiet and not jump (for her that was impossible!), so we got the biggest dog crate we could find and set it up in the corner of the living room. We put her bed, food, water and a small litter box in it and covered it with a quilt. I thought she would hate it, but she loved it. It became her "Fortress of Solitude," and she willingly spent most of her time in it during her recuperation.
Cleo would not poop while she was at the vet's. She waited until she was home and then did the biggest poop in her familiar litter box!
Hang in there Smaug!!!

What a blessing. I am so grateful they fond this. This has happened
So many times to cats here on the lair. It's a very important subject.
Other is other things besides ribbon, yarn, strings, there is hair bands
rubber bands, plastic plants. So we all need to keep everything out
of their reach.

Silly Smaug .. You had everyone so worried about you!
I'm thrilled that things worked out so well for the both of you!

I hope that things are still progressing well?
And you should know by now @nudieluvr that nothing is TMI on the lair when it come to the health of our little naked babies!

I hope that she is pooping better now, I know that after Elfie had her teeth extracted that all the meds had her very constipated.

I need extra lair love and prayers tonight. My baby is staying over at the clinic overnight. I felt so sad leaving him alone in a kennel. He is super impacted and is on iv fluids. I feel so heartbroken I'm sure he will be fine but I just feel so alone. I miss him so much.

Smaug is staying overnight at the clinic again. He isn't looking as good as the vet hopes. I am so heartbroken I can't imagine losing such a precious boy. I really hope that he is able to push through. Prayers are definitely needed!

I will keep the positive thoughts going Smaug's way. I am happy the vet did not just push your baby home too soon. He is getting the best of care.
