Smee died suddenly early Saturday morning. We are shocked.
No change in appetite.. he used his litter box that morning. No coughing, sneezing, no nothing.
Friday night at around 10 pm, we heard him wailing and bellowing, he had never meowed like that, he came into our bedroom to let us know something was wrong, he jumped on the bed and he had poop all over him.
We wrapped him in a towel and tried to calm him. I came to the living room where he had been sleeping on the couch, and there was poo everywhere. Soft, but a hard ball as well. I thought, maybe he had a slight impaction and worked it out?
I cleaned the furniture, stripped the bed, we bathed him, and he was cold.. and breathing heavy (we thought from being upset). We wrapped him in a blanket and put him in bed with us.. he calmed down and started purring even.
Around 430 I woke up to the sound of that bellowing meow again and found him in the kitchen panting to breathe.. it was horrible. I called our vets emergency number and she met us at the clinic. He was gone within a couple of hours, he was in end stage respiratory failure.
They think he died from effusive FIP. I knew nothing about that until I got him and googled.
If thats what it was, that was terrible. I paid for a necropsy, and nothing abnormal showed up. Heart, lungs, liver, everything looked good. But there was a lot of fluid in chest cavity preventing him from breathing. She said the surgery center 2 hours away might could have shunted and drained the fluid but he wouldnt make it there in time.
We took him in as a rescue and knew little to nothing about his health or previous care, but we suspected it wasnt good.
My only fear now is telling my son when he comes home tonight. He was away with friends (which im thankful for now).
These are the pics I took of him that night as I was texting my sister worried.

and one from barely two weeks ago of him sitting on me..
