I rescued my sphynx about 5 years ago from a breeder. Sassy is about 8 years old now. Ever since the day I brought her home she has a snotting issue - flinging snot. I've taken her to a few different vets, even a cat specialist, and no one can tell me why or if i can cure it. She has been put on antibiotics a few times that didn't help at all. Can anyone tell me if they ever had a similar problem and if there is a cure for this? I feel bad for her since she seems congested all the time......I live in PA (near philly) if anyone can recommend a vet familiar with sphynx....thanks!

When I got my Sphynx he had runny eyes and nose and sneezed all the time. He was given antihistamines and drops for his eyes and nothing seemed to work. At one point he was given Zenaquin for a UTI and later, Flagel (Metronitazol) for an intestinal issue. (I called my Vet to check) After he was done with the Flagel his runny eyes and nose were gone. He hasn't sneezed since. I don't know if it was a combination of the Flagel and the antihistamines or just the Flagel itself but you may want to check with your vet and see what he thinks. I'm sure it was an accident that his sinuses cleared up as I was treating him for the intenstinal issue but I'm not complaining. It's just nice to see his big beautiful green eyes.

I tried L-Lysine on my cat and it did nothing. During treatment for an intestinal parasite my cat was given Flagel. By the time the treatment was done his eyes and nose were all cleared up. I have no idea how it worked but I am thrilled with the results.

Good Luck. My cat used to squint because of the sinus issue and now his eyes are wide open. I hope this works for you.

Keep in mind Lysine is a immune booster and will help prevent illness and works well to keep herpes flair ups down, but it is not a antibiotic and is not meant to cure any illness just help prevent them.

Both of my cats (rescued from a terrible breeder) are like that. They sneeze ALL the time. sometimes their noses are stuffy and ill give them an antihistamine to help with that. Ive taken them to the vet several times and she said its just something that they will have their whole lives but since it doesnt hurt them or affect them in any way (except the snot) then just treat the symptoms.

His right eye has always been runny though. She said that he probably has allergies. We do have a parrot, so perhaps this is the cause if its an allergy. I also purchased an air purifier for our apartment, but the eye issue remains. I think I will ask my vet about this Flagel also.

We have a small parrot too, I have L-Lysine but when I put it on dry food they wont eat it, and when I give them wet food they have "potty issues" Not sure what to use to give it to her. I'm sure I'll figure something out. The eyes have cleared up very much on Fiona, but the snotting continues. We are still catching up from the summer, (husbands a teacher) so we haven't been able to go to the vet yet. With Swindle going back & forth, and our dog got bitten at my job, we've been spead real thin financially.
Next month will be much better, but these tips are helpful in the mean time. Also I think all the vaccuming & bathing is very helpful. I feed them Wellness and I believe it helps too

This is what the lady we adopted ours from said. That she will have it all her life, that she had no idea what it was called, she forgot. Yeah, let me know what antihistamine you use. Does it help? I feel so bad for Fiona, then she licks the snot off her nose, and it is disgusting to say the least. Thanks for your advice.

I give them half a tablet of this pill I get from Walmart called Chlortab. The vet said its safe to give to them (this is what they prescribed) and its like $2 for 100 tablets. It helps a little bit, not a complete fix and I dont give it to them a lot, only when they are particularly suffering/sneezy.

Benadryl - 1mg per POUND of cat is safe! My vet ordered it for my Fluffy who has CONSTANT runny eyes. We seem to think she has some sort of allergy (to what, who knows, food, environmental, don't really know). It works well.
Also, the Chlortab, which is Chlrotrimeton, which you can give between 2-4mg 1x daily per cat for allergies. Also, Zyrtec 5mg 1x per day were all things prescribed by my vet for Fluffy. Benadryl works the longest and best, but she has a hard time right when I give it to her, she gets whiney and cries but settles down after an hour, but her eyes are clear for about 24 hrs!! I have not given the Chlortab to be honest, and the Zyrtec works and does not make her whiney, and it is a lot more expensive.
Also, I AM NOT A VET! So, please check with your vet! These are just the meds she told us to give! But she did tell us they were safe and worked the best for us. I tried both the liquid and pill forms and the pills work the best, she spat the liquid back at me and foamed at that mouth instead.

Yeah, Boone's poo has always been soft, but not diarrhea. I mix 500mg of the lysine in 1 heaping teaspoon of canned food each morning to make sure he gets the full dose. All my cats are on dry food, but I give them a can to share a couple of times/ week. There's always leftovers. I'll never understand why 5 cats won't or can't finish 1 6 oz. can of cat food in 1 sitting, lol.

spencer has no sniffies or runny eyes and such. but jedi does, i took him to the vet when i first got him a month or so ago and the vet said it was normal. he laughed and said we got super duper lucky with spencer and jedi would should us what a normal sphynx was like haha.

I am so glad I came across this thread! Georgie has had a "snot" problem since he was about 6 months old. It doesn't seem to bother him, and doesn't affect his daily habits...eating, playing, etc.. But every once in a while he sounds very stuffy, and goes into sneezing fits (and at the risk of sounding gross...I am AMAZED that so much stuff can come out of that little nose!) I've taken him to the vet several times, just to make sure he didn't have a URI. I've tried benadryl, but it doesn't seem to work. I never thought of trying Flagyl, but I'm going to call the vet and give it a try!

Pebbles has the same exact problem. The 2nd day I brought him home from the breeder, he started to sneeze and it got worst. Took him to the vet 3 times already and he still sound stuffy. It doesn't deter him from doing his thing like playing, eating, biting and etc but sometimes he gets green goo out of his nose and then it clears up but he's still stuffy. I'll have to research Flagyl to see what it is before I mentioned it to my vet because she didn't know what else to do with Pebbles. She said I might have to go to a specialist.

Sashimi has been on the L-lyzine for 2 weeks now. She sneeze SNOTS on me religiously every morning. I have changed her little to a MORE dust free and even though the season is changing, I think it's not going to stop. When I first brought her home she was fine, the snotty sneezing started a month later after she had all her shots. She was just spayed and had a clean bill of health.
Anyway, I am hoping the L-lyzine will help after it gets into her system a bit. It's all clear snots, but I am to one whom is anointed daily. Maybe it means she really loves me.

My problem was runny eye. So Danser's vet eye specialist told me to put her on 1000mg L-lysine daily and started her on interfeuron (sp?) eye drops. She is doing awesome! The vet said anything less than 1000mg was not going to help her immune system tackle the inflammation in her eye.

It's possible she has a herpes virus. Lysine can help combat the issue. Try not let it get out of control to the point where she becomes so conjested she can no longer smell her food, because that will lead to anorexia, which in turn leads to hepatic issues. Lysine comes in many forms. You can even get it in a cat chewable form or even a paste. Good Luck!

Our baby has the exact problem. I don't mind the mess but I can't stand that he is always stuffy. I hate seeing him this way. Sometimes he seems like he is actually choking. I pat his chest and it seems to break up the mucus. Thanks

I would say a vet visit is needed. In the mean time perhaps start on Lysine to boost the immune system. it seems other had luck with Flagyl in the previous threads. Good luck-keep us posted.
