I am currently looking for a vet for my sphynx but a sphynx vet. What can I expect from a "sphynx" vet that other vets wont know? I want a vet who is familiar with sphynx but I am not sure what they should know that is any different then a regular cat. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
They're very special, but at the end of the day they're just super short-haired pure-bred cats----I don't think they necessitate an expert.
What you need in a vet is someone you feel comfortable asking questions and who knows his/her limitations. Regarding the latter: When I asked about the blackheads on Astor's tail, my vet said that they looked like comedones (blackheads), briefly explained what his thoughts were, and took a small skin sample to send to a dermatologist.
His assessment was spot on, but he knew someone who was more expert in this area and deferred to him.
I also think it's important for you to really like your vet as a person. You have to be comfortable asking questions, lots of questions, and lots of stupid questions, and if you feel judged, you'll be hesitant and uncomfortable.
The person who will have the most impact on your kitty's health is you. The more information you are able to provide, the more silly or neurotic or paranoid or embarrassing questions you ask, the better care your vet can provide.
