Hi Lair friends,

A few weeks ago I found Apollos skin looking pale, I didn't think much about it at the time because I've seen his skin change during seasons. But this was different he looks ghostly pale. He is whiter than my boy Sincere who is white. He always was under the blankets in my daughter room because he is completely naked zero hair on his body. And he is always been a lean actually skinny boy.
But he just didn't look right to me so I took him to the vet and did blood work and exam. He was due to go anyway he will be 2 years on January 15. In any case he had a full blood panel CBC and BNP and this was last Saturday. When results came back it indicated heart disease. During his exam there was also a significant murmur that vet graded about a 3 and suggested we go see cardiologist. He goes this Friday 11:30am. The vet put him on plavx to keep him from forming a clot . His test also showed that he is anemic and dehydrated and that there is inflamation and a deficiency with his immune system based on lab work. I can give numbers if anyone comments on what test I should have run next either before he goes to cardiologist or after?

The other symptom he has now is his eyes are yellow both were but now only the right was yesterday. The vet recommend a vitamin with iron for his anemia but said that we need to run more test to see WHY he is anemic. Anemia is a symptom not a disease she said. So my question is what test do all of you recommend? And with his eyes turning yellow does that mean his liver is beyond repair and why is his liver sick in the first place?
His blood panel revealed slight dehydration but I'm less worried now because he seems to be drinking and we are providing him with extra wet food with water added to it.... His appetite seem good. We are adding calorie paste to his food to help him put back on the pound he lost honestly he's always been so lean that .75 is a lot to lose for him. His spine and ribs were showing and it seem like it happen over night.!

He sleeps with my daughter all night and comes and lays by the wood stove during the day and he disappears back into her room, but comes out for evening time when my husband gets home and spends time with him. Apollo has real affection for my husband and vice versa. I have consulted his breeder also. In ten years she has only had a couple sick babies her numbers are very low, she is excellent. So at this point I would like to know what medications work best for heart disease and what test should be ran to find out the cause of anemia and if his eye color change and skin color change are a result of his heart working hard or liver or anemia or all.
I have not wanted to post because it's just been hard and I just feel so bad for him. He's sweet, gentle and smart boy and I don't know if he hasn't been feeling well for a while and was just hiding it by hibernating under blankets in my daughter room because he does that anyway he's always cold unless he's infront of fire so I didn't think anything of it right away:(

I am sorry your baby Apollo is not doing well. Hopefully your cardiologist and vet will get this thing under control fast because I am sure you feel as though Friday cannot come fast enough. Once they diagnose and recommend meds please update so members can make more specific comments for you. There are a few members here managing HCM in their babies. Lair Prayers are sent.

Does heart disease mean HCM automatically? No Friday can not come soon enough.:(
I just want to know if I should do more labs now or wait till after he see cardiologist on Friday. I can bring him to vet that Saturday get blood work and have it back for Wednesday when his doctor is in. But I want to make sure she had report on Apollo by specialist before ordering more labs.
I'm worried about his eye color now

@Embracing-Joyx4 , I am sorry Apollo is not feeling well :(
Sending ((Hugs)) and positive healing thoughts -
Try to Keep positive- many kitties heart issues can be managed with a diagnosis / treatment plan.
We know he is in the best of love n care with you-
I am glad you have an appointment and can get a treatment plan for your baby-
My Kato had plavix too and a few other meds for underlying issues that helped once we got a confirmation diagnosis-

I know the wait is stressful - we are here for you and Apollo with Huge get we'll wishes!
I am sorry I don't know more about his eye color changes -

I would give a call back to your vet and ask about advice on his eyes color and your lab question .
I know we leave these vets offices and it is overwhelming - lots goes through our minds once we get home-

They may say wait till after the Friday appt. so you get a plan as to what tests may be called for.
Is Apollo on other medications ?

I like using the calorie paste too . There is goop recipe here too on the Lair.
Be sure to check him for dehydration regularly- the vet may have shown you the technique to check for "tenting"
On the back of neck skin- I would ask the vet too if it would be beneficial to add some unflavored clear pedialyte or keep some on hand.

Apollo is a sweetie - and I don't think it is anything you missed- we all second guess ourselves when they don'tt feel well-
You are great mum and got him in right away for treatment
Give him extra feel better soon cuddles from me !

Don't hesitate to call you vet with any questions between now and Friday - they are usually good about making a phone call back to answer some questions.

No, HCM is not the only form of heart disease cats can get. Here is a link to some general information on some heart diseases seen in cats. Once they scan the heart they will be able to see where the issue is and what meds to go with. Many of the same meds are used for different heart issues just like in people. The whole goal will be to make the heart work less hard than it is right now and. Yet supply the entire body.

So sorry that Apollo and you are dealing with all this. I think the main thing for you to do first is just make sure he eats and if possible drinks....stick to wet foods. Putting the weight back on would be a great start. Then on Friday when he sees the cardiologist hopefully they will provide more info. Make sure the regular vet sends the bloodwork results over so they can get to work right away.

Believe me I know how frustrating it can be waiting for specialist appointments. I'll just share this experience in case it comes in handy for you down the road. One of my prior cats had cancer and we used to go see an oncological vet. It was a big clinic and they also had other specialists there (in fact we also would periodicallly see an internal medicine vet). There was a vet tech there 24/7 because they had some pets staying overnight that needed meds and attention. There was also an emergency vet on call. A couple of times I went in the middle of the night and had them call the emergency vet. My cat got treated right away and they had all the records there. The only thing is you had to a patient of theirs. I say all this because after Friday you shouldn't have to go through any more nights just waiting for an appointment.

Last idea - have you tried to have your regular vet call the cardiologist and ask to get you in sooner?

Best wishes to you and Apollo. Remember to stay positive and take one day at a time.
