Valentine.... The sweet girl tht never made it home. I had a breeder that I had purchased Roswell from. My cousin also had purchased a Lil nudist (not so little anymore) from her prior to ever dealing with her. A co-worker of mine had also bought one of the many litter mates of Roswell at the same time. All three of these nakeds have been and still are healthy and problem free. I instantly fell in love with this breed and wanted more than one but I just didn't have the space for another. Roswell was content beating up our dog and cuddling with him in the down time, so there wasn't any NEED for a new Sphynx baby. Sadly, my best friend of 13 years, my puppy, my Shelby Lou, had passed away at the end of January of this year. I knew one day his time would come, bug you are never prepared for that heartbreak. I was crushed.... Our whole family was..... Roswell was crushed. Who would he chase, who would he cuddle with when us human slaves of his weren't around. His attitude changed. He got super clingy. I decided that it was time to bring home another Sphynx. I called my breeder shortly after Shelby's passing and she informed me that she was wrapping up her breeding career. She had two mommies, due in feb and march. The first litter was born on 2-14-13 (valentines day). Two weeks later I drove an hour and a half to her house to pick out my newest naked. It was a litter of three. One baby had already been spoken for leaving two for me to see. One baby wanted to sleep while the other immediately took to crawling all the up my chest. She was extremely vocal and adorable.... And just like a valentine... She would be mine! I left my money with my breeder as to make sure nobody else was going to take my baby. Weeks passed, and my breeder would send me updates and pictures of my darling valentine. Our love for her at home grew despite not even bringing her home yet. We were one week from going to pick her up when the unthinkable happened. I received a call saying that valentine had died. Not only that but the other baby that had been spoken for had died as well. No reasonable explanation was given for what had happened, no matter how hard I tried, multiple calls to vets, nobody could clarify how this happened. All I was left with we're three options. 1 take my money back and move on. 2 choose a new kitten from the second litter born in march. 3 take the sole remaining baby from the first litter. Now she knew of me losing my puppy and due to the fact that I was a repeat buyer and had also helped her sell off one of roswell's litter mates, she was giving me a hell of a deal on valentine. The only thing that made sense to me in this situation was that she was lying! And I hope to god for my valentine that she was. I pray that somebody else had come along and offered her a few hundred extra for the baby that I chose and grew to love despite never bringing her home. With that though in mind and my own vets opinion, I decided to go with option 3. And like all clouds have a silver lining....

There she was.... My Fiona! I have never owned a sweeter cat. She was a blessing in disguise. She was the baby I did not choose but through a series of unfortunate events, I ended up with the most lovable girl ever. While I pray for my valentine, whether she has moved on from this place, or is living a happy, healthy life somewhere else.... I still love her.... She was still mine, and I am thankful that from a heartbreaking situation Roswell and the rest of us ended up with our darling Fiona.

I know a lot of people here on the lair have experienced the same heartbreak of losing a small kitten as you did. I remember that from the moment I picked Henry at only a few days old he was already "mine" and a huge piece of my heart. I'm sorry for your loss and am happy for you and Roswell that Fiona came into your lives!

That's some story! I'm sorry that you and your family went through such sorrow. I sat at the end of my seat as I was reading. I don't know what happened to your Valentine, but I had a thought while reading everything you said. I'm wondering if the litter of kittens had gone to the vet for vaccines and had a reaction. Just a though.

In the meantime, your Fiona is absolutely adorable. Enjoy every moment that she gives you joy. :)

My breeder said that it may have had something to do with the vaccine but Fi had the same thing and she was fine. We may never know. She's home happy and healthy. She is just about eight months old now. Gettin by just fine .this is actually her rubbing up on my face as I'm typing this....

Who knows...maybe the vet made a mistake!

I'm just glad that you and your family are very happy now. :)

Im glad in the end your heart has been filled with love. Sometimes it's strange how things work out. I too lost a kitten I was supposed to get. It's heartbreaking. You bond with them. My baby got sick 3 days before she was to come home. I had visited her often. I was devastated. The sorrow I felt was overwhelming. I thought for a while I wouldn't bother getting another. The breeder called about a month ago, and she had a kitten that she thought was meant for me. One look at her,is all it took. We are awaiting her arrival next month.

Valentine is with good company if indeed she did cross the Rainbow Bridge. I think little Fiona is adorable and it is obviously a love match, so I am so happy for you all.

I too lost a small one before I was able to bring him home. The vet called it "failure to thrive". Apparently it happens sometimes. Poor, sweet little things. I am so glad it worked out.

So sorry for your loss :( I had a very similar situation! When the litter my Zoa belonged to was born, there were two girls and a boy and I had my eye on that little dark-spotted girl on the far right:

A few weeks later she passed away, but it wasn't a virus as the others were healthy. It is possible the mama cat accidentally squished her. They're so fragile when they're young, so my breeder doesn't take deposits till they're weaned and have their first round of vaccines. I ended up taking the other little girl (far left) and can't imagine it any other way. She is the baby I was meant to have!

I'm so sorry about Valentine but so glad you have your precious Fiona! I think things work out the way they're meant to, even if there is heartbreak along the way.
