Just wanted to get everyone’s opinions on testing. Would it be a smart idea to get my kittens tested for fiv and felV now at the age of 5 months old? And how much do those tests usually run? Also what kind of test should I get done to make sure their hearts are looking good? I was told not to do a full consultation unless something is found in the smaller tests but not sure what to ask my vet to do. I have one kitten that is completely normal but my little girl is kind of sickly and was diagnosed with feline herpevirus and I’m not too familiar with how that is but she’s gotten kind of better but still is always kinda sickly looking (gooey eyes, etc). I can’t seem to get a clear answer from any vet I’ve called about how feline herpevirus works and I was just thinking it may not be a bad idea to rule out other diseases just to make sure as this Breeder I’ve gotten kittens from before has had extremely sickly cats and I’ve had two heartbreaks now (one cat passed at 3 from hcm and another kitten had pneumonia and instead of giving her back to me as promised she decided to make money off of her).

Can you post s thread for a vet recommendation for your area,?
hopeful others will chime in with their experiences.

When my boy had an eye issue - the specialist said I could get false positives for some tests so she treated the signs and symptoms

following closely for updates amd sending healing vibes and hugs to you

Hi :) every Vet will have different test. at my hospital, we can either run the felv/fiv test inhouse or we can send it out to a lab. So depending on the clinic you take him, it just depends on their resources. Test can run anywhere from 70-160$. I think viral testing your babies is important if your breeder did not. I learned that as my baby is currently fighting FIP who is 5mos of age. As to checking their heart, a cardiologist/specialist can check your baby’s HCM by running an ultrasound and such to check the overall heart function (flow, thickness of walls, grade murmur, etc). Obviously that will run a bit more expensive.

Thank you for the info! I was trying to avoid doing a full cardiologist appointment as it runs $700 for a consultation and I have two kittens so unless my vet finds something on a check up or an X-ray I was going to avoid that route. FelV and fiv just concerns me a lot as I see a lot of people saying their babies have it so I’ll probably go and get that test done just to be safe!

During wellness checks I ask my vet to take a good listen of the heart for any murmurs .
My boy has a grade 3 (subject grading by vet ) he is not showing signs and she did not put him on meds .

Also remember FeLV and FIP vaccines will often void a contract
*Those two vaccines are not recommend as you may have read on threads here

Yeah I wasn’t going to get the vaccines just wanted to get the test to see if they had it or not underlying. I don’t have insurance for my cats as most insurance companies won’t fully cover the full amount of a specific issues but rather up to around $600 a year max so at that point it’s easier for me to just pay up front. Thanks for all the info guys!
