Transitioning from Royal Canin to Instinct Raw

Hi all!
My baby is scheduled to come home with me in about a month and I’m thrilled!
I have a question on transitions food though & any help would be appreciated.

The Breeder told me she feeds Royal Canin Gi High Energy formula to her cats. That specific formula requires a vet approval before you can purchase. On top of that, I’m not too crazy at all about Royal Canin’s ingredients. I’d prefer to use a raw diet as that seems more natural and overall more recommended. A true raw diet doesn’t fit into my budget so I’m planning on using Instinct raw wet & dry food.

I didn’t want to take her home & switch foods automatically but I’m not sure that I have another option. There are no vets open here outside of emergency care due to COVID so I doubt I’ll be able to get approval for the specialty formula. My next idea was to get the RC kitten and slowly transition from that to IR, however, I reached out to RC and they said that their formulas are not interchangeable and they recommend a slow transitions between formulas so that idea was taken out.

Has anyone else switched from RC to IR cold turkey? Or from another brand to IR? What were your experiences? I just don’t want her to have tummy issues from food and deal with the stress of moving homes all at the same time. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

@mamak , kudos to you researching. your breeder can help too with food recommendations that are non RX and slooow transition. is breede sending you home with some food to slow transition? also recommend using the same litter and type of litter box when newly homed. surely members with chime in about their experiences with Instinct raw wet and dry.. the search box top right is a great tool.

I didn’t do a transition, but I do feed instinct brand wet food to Ellie. I didn’t know they made a pure raw. I thought they only had raw boost kibble and raw boost mixers. I like the brand though. Ellie does well on it.

I don’t feed Arlo Instinct Raw but I do feed him a raw diet. He came to me on Royal Canin kitten dry and wet and I was going to keep him on that for a month or so, but the raw diet groups on fb said you can transition to raw anytime. So I transitioned him a week after I brought him home and he’s been doing really well.

I think some members feed 1 raw meal be a day and then kibble for the rest. Or you could just feed a canned food that isn't too expensive. They are more economical I'd you buy the 12 ounce can. You can get a lid for it and keep what you haven't used yet in the fridge....it keeps for a couple of days.
