Ok so Elvis is completely transitioned to a premade RAW diet- he is doing great on it, and I am absolutely loving all the benefits!
Because Thanksgiving was just last week, we of course had a turkey. Before my Dad cooked it I took out the neck and the heart, liver and gizzard. I had my Dad cut the (gigantic) turkey neck into four pieces.
With the other organs I have just cut them up small and added a bit of heart or liver to his meal...figured might as well give him all the fresh taurine I can.
Now back to the neck...like I said, we cut it into four pieces about 2-3 inches each. I'm wondering how I'm supposed to give it to him?
I've been weighing out his RAW meals and adding l-lysine and taurine...should I weigh out the turkey neck and just replace it as a meal? Or just give it on top of the 8 ounces he eats each day?
I just don't want to give it to him and upset his stomach because he has eaten too much- I know he will eat it even if he has just eaten a full 8 ounces. I know he is getting the right amount of food, he doesn't beg for more (not more than normal at least haha) and he isn't leaving any left in the bowl or throwing up. So I don't want to ruin that!
I'm thinking I could give him breakfast, maybe a little smaller than usual, then a couple hours later give him the turkey neck and then when dinner comes we will see if he needs all 4 ounces or not....sound good?

Also- he goes in for his neuter surgery on Tuesday. Monday will be a normal day, normal dinner. Tuesday no breakfast of course, but then should I give him a regular meal at dinner time?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds good to me.....and he should be fine by the afternoon after his neuter--he might want something right away even. Mine were always hungry when they got home.

I gave my guys the giblets/ neck as a treat. But they eat kibble.
Also, the vet should tell you how much he should be fed the night of. I have had them tell me to feed normal, and another to feed light, and another say nothing until morning.

Great! I'm going to wait until Wednesday to give him the neck, just so his neuter surgery is over.
I'm so freaked out about it, but the vet said I can pick him up almost right after so he isn't waiting in their cold kennels ;)

The vet only mentioned no breakfast the morning of surgery, and I forgot to ask about dinner that night! I will ask when I bring him in, but if I know my boy right- and I think I do ;)- he is going to want dinner waiting for him haha :)

great idea with the left over turkey ...he will love those necks !!

as far as feeding after surgery this is what the vet I worked for had us do . Most anasteasia wear off within a few hours...You will want to start slowly with just a small amount of water first. he will most likly feel thirsty, but if you give him too much he will gulp greedily and then it will be thrown right back up. So pace him. After he has kept the water down for an hour you can start introducing food. Again small amounts at first then increasing every 1/2 hour.

Also ask them to put a blanket on him while he is in recovery. our clinic would do that for small animals or elderly ones some times they have a hard time regulating body temp at first. Elvis will do great ! hes going to be so happy to see you and to go home and get in his own bed !!

I don't replace a meal with a chicken or turkey neck. Hudson gets his normal meals as well as a chicken neck at least once a week..he generally gets two a week. Meaty bones are important in a raw diet. Great for the teeth:BigSmile:

Some members on another group (rawcat on yahoo), say if it's new to the cat/kitten to first pulverize it then cut into 3rds or 4ths depending on how long they've been eat big pieces of raw like gizzards/wings... Once they get used to that you can give it as a meal once a week, using less raw in one of the feedings before or after.. It's used as more of a treat with teeth cleaning benefits and lots of bone! So you may want to give a all meat meal either before or after... it can constipate a cat if too much bone...
