I was really nervous about calling Sissy's cat sitter today after the weird conversation we had with him Thursday evening. But we knew that we had to call him to get some sort of update on Sissy's condition.
The sitter knew who we were immediately, which I thought was a good sign this time. But that was the best part of the conversation!
I first asked him how all the kittens were doing and he said that they are now responding to him and perk up when he walks in to take care of them. Made me think that they were lethargic days ago!?!
I asked him if he knew which one Sissy was (as my breeder informed me that she pointed her out to him because she knew that we may pick her up before she returns from her cruise). That's when the conversation really got confusing!
Of course, he didn't know which one Sissy was. So I calmly described her and said that she is the only one that looks this way. He asked me if she's in the back room or the other room. Now how would I know that? I told him that I was told that there is a room for sick kittens and another room for sicker kittens. Of course, my breeder told me that Sissy is in the room with "just the sick kittens"! That was all I could tell him.
Then he asked me again and again, "Which room is Sissy in?" OMG! I told him which one her mother cat was and what she looked like. He asked if Sissy would be with her and I told him that the breeder has two different litters that are three days apart and both mother cats have taken turns nursing the kittens, so I didn't know which mother cat was with Sissy. He said, "But shouldn't the kittens be with their mothers?" I said, "Well, not necessarily because the breeder separated the sick kittens from the sicker kittens and I don't know which mother cat is with Sissy.
But again I described what Sissy looked like to a "T". Reminding him that she IS the ONLY one that has that coloring out of the nine kittens split up in two different rooms. So he was nice enough to go to the back room first, which is just the sick room filled with kittens and Sissy was not in there. My heart fell! He found Sissy in the "sicker kitten room" and I felt sick as my breeder insisted that Sissy was not that sick and in the less sick room for sure!
So now I asked him how does she look...any better than the other day? He told me again that all the kittens were more responsive to him compared to the other day. Ok, that was good news. WHEW! But when I asked how her eyes looked and if she is still sneezing or does she have a runny or stuffy nose, his response was just like the other day, "I don't know, I'm not a vet, I couldn't tell you that!"
Yet, the other day, he did jump at the chance for us to come and pick her up...thinking we were in Florida at that moment! He is quite obviously overwhelmed with taking care of nine sick kittens, at least one other seven month old sick kitten (and who knows how many other sick cats and kittens?), plus giving out medicines, feedings, replacement formula and litter boxes. That's not even counting his six day a week job that he leaves the breeder's house at 6
0 a.m. and returns back at 7
0 p.m.!
Being that he doesn't know one kitten from the next makes me think is he really giving everyone eye medicines and oral antibiotics or is he getting things so mixed up that he's giving some kittens double doses or some kittens nothing?
I told him that we would like to plan on coming to Florida this weekend and picking up Sissy on Sunday (a week from today). So I asked if he thinks she'll be well enough by then to leave and he said, "I'm not a vet, but why don't you come and take a look at her and decide!" I reminded him that I live in NY and there's already been two attempts to pick up Sissy and my husband came home empty-handed!
So that's when he said not to purchase the plane tickets yet and to just wait until the breeder comes back home from the cruise!
@RetroKitty suggested the other day that Sissy go to the vet for a mucous panel. So I asked the sitter if he could please take Sissy to the vet for this test soon as it takes days and days to get the results. I told him that I will pay for this test. His answer was, "I'll think about it!" WHAT? What the heck does that mean? It's "yes" or it's "no"! And when will I get an answer as he may be thinking and thinking about this for two second or for the next 10 days! Gee!
I don't even remember ending the conversation after all of that, but I know I did tell him that I'll speak to him in a few days again!
We hung up the phone and my husband was fit to be tied! He said, "That's it, we ARE getting Sissy this Sunday no matter what. He said, "If we leave Sissy there until the breeders come back from vacation, Sissy may not make it until then!" Hubby also said, "Monday, we will take Sissy right to our vet and let him decide if she needs to be hospitalized or have tests done or just get new medicines."
SIGH, so that's what we are going to do. Sissy is coming home a week from today. I wish we could pick her up sooner, but this sitter isn't home much at the breeder's house. I really don't want to get Sissy and then have to take a late night flight home. I don't want her out in the NY night air as it's gotten very chilly out once the sun goes down. Even though she'll be wearing a sweater, have a blanket and her sack in her travel case, she will still be exposed to the elements. I'm not going to be able to properly care for her in a hotel room either...thinking I could get her at 7
0 p.m. from him and then fly out the next day early because the hotel room is freeeeeezing cold. I'll never be able to keep her warm enough there.
I'm so tense about this, it's like sitting on pins and needles. I woke up today and the right side of my jaw was in pain and locked. Tension, tension, tension. I want Sissy so badly. I want her to be healthy and live. I want to help her grow up to be a big girl that will be very much loved by her new Mommy & Daddy as well as three loving brothers.
Sigh again, ok, that's the story and tomorrow I'm booking the airline tickets and hotel as well as the kennel for my two dogs.
