Upper Respritory Infection

We just got another sphynx and the poor baby spent a week at the vets office. He was in pretty bad shape when I got him last week. He had teeth missing, very under weight and an upper respritory infection. I was sent home with antibiotics and he has a follow up appointment this Friday. Was wondering if there is any way to make his breathing easier and estimate how long it will take for the infection to clear up. I'm debating about requesting a chest x ray to make sure he doesn't have pneumonia as well. I have a humidifier running in the living room to keep the air moist in hopes of making it easier to breathe. Any feed back or questions that might be good to ask the vet would be most helpful. Sammy is such a sweet little boy and it's breaking my heart that he's having a difficult time.

Put him in the bathroom with the vaporizer or the shower running to fill the room with steam. Keep his nose cleaned off so he gets a good air flow, drop some pure saline drops up his nose to keep it moist. Keep him warm and cozy and love him up so he won't get depressed.

Unfortunately yes. He is 4 years old and was to be used for breeding purposes.the breeder that owned him said he never produced a litter and asked me if I wanted him. I have a soft spot for animals and sense I can't have children my cats are my kids. When I saw him I had to have him. I have a ton of love and attention to give the little guy and want to give him the best life possible. His brother who we took first hasn't left his side sense we brought him home. I just hope this medicine works and the infection hasn't done serious damage. The vet said he's had this infection for quite a while. I know I can't snap my fingers and take it all away but I hope it clears up quickly. I feel like every 5 minutes I'm looking at him. Thanks for the well wishes for speedy recovery. Hope I'll have good news soon

Thank you for the info. Will try the steam method first. Might be a struggle getting saline in his nose with out turning him into a burrito. Lol.

awwww what a story he has behind him !
Our Cornie is a Rescue like this , he produced but was getting old and thats when they "retired" him . He is the best cat ever ! ( well all mine are i think haha ) , he is so mellow and just a good Cat . So much love he has to give.

They are wonderful. I can't believe how affectionate they are. I'm still getting adjusted to the breed itself. Our spud who is my profile picture has poop issues. I can't seem to get it to firm up. I was told by blog that this is pretty common not to have fully formed or harder stools. Sammy the ill little one just pooped for the first time yesterday sense we brought him home Friday. It was really hard. My husband said he was whining while he was going. I loaded him up on wet food last night and added water to it as well to get more liquid in him in hopes to soften it up. He went last night and again this morning. No straining noises and poop is pretty soft. I was getting worried there was more going on with him besides the infection. I think this Friday I'm going to insist on a chest x ray to make sure there's no pneumonia. He makes a kind of wheezing noise at times. It's pretty bad after I give home the antibiotic. Hope he gets better soon because it's killing me to see him like this.

Sending lots of prayers. For your baby with the runny poop, have you tried giving him a tsp of pumpkin (the real pumpkin in the can, NOT the pumpkin pie filling)? Emma was struggling with runny poop after her surgery and we started giving her pumpkin every day and it has worked amazingly well!

My youngest has allergies to just about everything but now I have her on cereal free food she is breathing better. I can't open windows so have aircon which in UK is almost unheard of!! She was tested and is allergic to most trees,seeds,plants grains etc. unfortunately she also has the calicivirus so her laboured breathing may also be due to that. I have just tried her on interferon for the last 4 months but it made no difference. She has a great quality of life and as long as she doesn't get "ill" we are all happy. If she ever gets mouth ulcers or needs vet treatment then I am very aware I will have to say goodbye to her as she does not tolerate the vets and because of the calici mustn't be stressed.
Hope all will be ok with your baby. They are such a worry!!

That is what we do for Emma and she gobbles it right up. We tried it straight and she wanted no part!

Awe...Susi gave you good advise for congestion glad he finally pooped keep him hydrated with wet food if his poop gets running plain canned pumpkin. and start him on some l-lysine to boost his immune system ASAP!
