I wanted to share with you all some information about a serious urinary blockage my boy Luigi has experienced. I hope it can be useful for another member in the future.

Unfortunately I have some terrible news :(

This past weekend Luigi started to vomit, as some of you know, he's on Prozac for his feline hyperesthesia, which in the past a handful of times made him nauseas if he took it too soon before his morning meal... So I thought this was the case and didn't think much about it. Fast forward to that evening he began frequent trips to his literbox. I then got ready for bed and Luigi was no where to be found... Which to be honest was the worst symptom of all... Me in bed without him is like watching the pope go into a strip club... It just doesn't happen!

I begin to look for him and I find him laying in his literbox. He looked so sad I couldn't look and I immediately knew something was terribly wrong. I rush him to the vet....

His bladder was obstructed and he was moments away from kidney failure. Resulted in an emergency catheterization, and the vet spent over 45 minutes trying to unblock him. He is still in the hospital as I pace my house missing him staring at his toys and moments away from weeping. They suspect that the catheter will be removed tomorrow or Wednesday and home Thursday or Friday.

So I had a very tough decision to make after yet another hefty hefty vet bill...with potentially a 3-4,000 surgery around the corner.... I asked myself is now the right time to get a kitten when I may need to very shortly invest a lot more money into my hairless son... And I ultimately decided it's not.

Not to say in the future when Luigi is home and well, it won't happen... Just now isn't the time.

Please pray for Luigi :(

Poor Luigi...Poor you :( please please let us know how things go, i will pray for you & your baby & ask that hes home soon, as for the new baby only you can make that decision there is no right or wrong choice, he may help Luigi back to his playful self, Luigi may also see him as a threat, you will know in your heart what is the right thing for your family & what Luigi would like, if you do take on a new kitty tho i'd seriously consider insurance as we never know whats around the corner, so much love sent from our home to yours, Lisa & Blue xxx

Ok! I am so sorry for the delay in update! I must be honest it hasn't been easy.

First, Luigi and I thank you all so much for your thoughtful kind words of healing.

Luigi is home, but certainly not without a long road ahead. The catheter came out yesterday, and the vets office felt ok with him going home today since he has had two successful urinations since it's removal.

When I got to the vet, they already had him in his carrier and he seemed extremely comfortable so I didn't want to bother him and take him out since I knew he'd NEVER go back in.

Without going into the minutiae of the conversation with the vet , I was told he shouldn't be in any pain, but to be extremely vigilant of his urination and behavior .... Ok fine.... Also, the vet suggested he be on Royal Canin Urinary SO wet food, so I purchased a case.

Now here's where the plot thickens... I get him home, release him from the carrier and he bolts to his literbox... Same straining same position no urine. He is clearly in pain as now he's crying and his breathing is rapid.

Immediately call the vet, during which time he urinated three times ... Twice in his box, once on the floor.

I had extra pain meds from his tail amputation and I asked if I can give it to him. She says yes. Within minutes he's relaxed and comfortable.

I am calling luigis primary vet now, as this whole debacle began as always after normal office hours.

Oh poor Luigi and YOU. The next couple of days are no doubt going to be stressful for both of you. Hopefully things start to function properly and his level of pain diminishes. Sounds like he is a vocal boy so you can at least have a gauge if he starts feeling uncomfortable again. Please know you have a bunch of us sending positive vibes and thank you for the update!

Alright another update! Bittersweet....but things are looking good! So this morning Luigi gave me the scare of my life... I woke up to him trailing blood. Immediately we rush him to his primary vet, over an hour in rush hour traffic.. We made it there for an emergency visit. Upon examination, it was clear that luigi was still blocked and that at this point his bladder was the size of a grapefruit. Crisis time! He took an x ray, and they couldn't find any obstruction. Time for an immediate catheter yet again. They felt that it was a possible blood clot that was causing the blockage, and it would be somewhat routine because there is no actual stone. 2 hours later I receive a call that they absolutely could not get past the blockage and that he would need an emergency perineal urethrostomy or PU as it's called which in essence is a sex change operation where the genetalia structure is changed to that of a female cat--with a feline urologist at a price tag of 8,000 or he wouldn't survive the night without the catheter.

I am sure you could imagine how my life changed at that moment.

I BEGGED the vet to please attempt to unblock him one more time before we proceed with the surgery..he agreed and said that he would attempt at 3:30pm. 3:30 came and went, 4:30 came and went...5 o'clock my phone rings.. I am thinking that god forbid luigi is dead....

The verdict... 1 1/2 hours after trying to unblock him, the obstruction became dislodged... Another x ray was taken... Luigi is free and clear of all obstructions... The obstruction came out during the flushing.

As some of you know he had a tail amputation.... He was blocked by a fragment of a vertebrae that became dislodged during the amputation. How it ended up in his urethra ... Nobody knows!

So here we are, he remains catheterized until Sunday, with a hopeful release on Monday! Let's pray the road stays straight and narrow to recovery :)

Thank you all again for your kind words of support!

Joey and Luigi
