Rupert is terminal and was given one month to live today. He likely has FIP and the vet has discovered that he has a heart murmur, not that that really matters at this point. I took him to the vet today because I thought he was constipated, but it turns out that his distended abdomen is from fluid accumulation. The vet aspirated it and is sending it off to the lab along with some blood work. The x-rays are terrible. He has so much fluid in his belly that his internal organs below his rib cage are not visible. His heart is enlarged and is in contact with his sternum. He is getting an ultrasound on monday to take a closer look at his heart and abdomen. It's just so terrible, words can't describe how heart wrenching this is. The vet had to use an 18 gage needle, 2 separate aspiration spots, to obtain a sample and drain some of the fluid it was so thick. His belly was leaking so badly from the pressure it wouldn't stop so they bandaged it up. His belly looks bigger than when I took him to the vet's this morning and seems to have filled up quite a bit in his pelvic area. I don't think he is going to make it a month, I think maybe 2 weeks is more humane.

You can see that no internal organs are visible from below the rib cage b/c of all of the fluid that has accumulated in his abdominal cavity. Also, you can't see it here, but his heart is enlarged and is in contact with his sternum. The vet says there is a small chance that it could be congestive heart failure or either a tumor of sorts, but along with his other symptoms, the vet is 95% sure he has Feline Infectious Peritonitis. As most of you may already know, it is fatal and he only has about a month or so to live. It explains a lot of things though - the problems with his bowels that we've had since the first month he came home, to the not gaining very much weight, to him being more of a snuggler and not playing with the others so much, not meowing or running around with the others. It's not that he was more of a snuggler, a quiet guy or even low key, he's just been sick, so sick that he doesn't have the breath to meow or be able to run around.

You can see with these two pics how distended he is. It honestly looks like there is a grapefruit in his stomach.

I can't even begin to tell you how devastated I am over this, my heart is broken, broken to pieces. Rupert is very special to me, he saved my life. When I was diagnosed with depression for the first time in my life, it was pretty bad. I knew I was going to get to the point where I just didn't want to exist anymore. Then I had the idea of getting a sphynx kitten and we went and looked at them. He chose me. He came right up to me, swatted my hand and climbed all over me. When we were leaving, he followed me down the stairs, he was the only one who came down the stairs to see me off. When I found out we shared the same birthday, I knew it was meant to be, this must be a sign. Rupert gave me a reason to get out of bed every day. I knew he depended on me and I was determined not to let him down. When my depression was at it's worst and I was focused on dying and dying quickly, I just looked at him and decided I was going to die but it wasn't going to be today - he was my reason to continue on everyday. Now, it is he who is dying and there isn't a damned thing I can do about it. I have to watch him slip away. As his belly fills with the fluids, the pressure on his diaphragm will increase and breathing will get harder and harder; the vet explained it as akin to drowning. I was really hoping he would pass peacefully in the night, but I doubt that will happen. I suspect we will have to put him to sleep as his breathing will become more and more "gaspy" as he fights for air, and I don't want him to have to go through that fear and pain. It is just such an unfair decision to have to make. I don't know if I can even do it, just typing about it now is very, very upsetting for me.

Oh, and to top it all off, Orion has a heart murmur as well. He isn't showing any clinical signs as of yet, so we are going to get him scanned once he is a year old, which isn't too far off. Rupert on the other hand won't make it to his first birthday.

Angel, I don't even have the words to say how I feel right now. I am so sorry for you, for Rupert (Poopy), and for Orion... Also for Priscilla (who I hope is healthy), but losing her big brother....

There has been so much loss on the Lair lately and I never imagined your absence in the last week or two would be devastating news such as this.

I am crying as I write this because I love Rupert as well... as does everyone here. You are NOT alone in this. We are all suffering with you... and we will all stand by you to support the hard decisions you have to make, as well as be there for you to vent and to mourn one day.

I just wish you and Rupert some happy, loving, and snuggly time left together. I also wish you the strength to make a very hard decision when you know the time is right.

We love you and Rupert and we are here for you. I am sooooo sorry that the two of you are going through this.

OH,I am so terribly sorry.....Rupert is such a beautiful kitty. Now I know you are horribly upset--as well you should be--but you listen to me please. Rupert came to you to help you. I firmly believe that. He gave you a reason to get up in the morning...he helped you crawl out of a deep depression. He did that. He fulfilled his mission in this life and it was and is a noble thing he did. Now, he's tired and his little body can't go on much longer....please love him and then thank God for the time you had with this sweet little soul...don't allow yourself to fall back into a depression again...because that would negate Rupert's biggest accomplishment--the whole reason he chose you. I truly believe the things we love don't happen upon us by accident, but are part of a master plan. Rupert gave you back your life. You owe it to him to make it count. Now, I know it's hard, but you have to help him now. Let him know you love him, thank him for choosing you and for all he did for you. When it's time, don't make him suffer. Then give him the only gift you have left to give him, a peaceful, love-filled passing to the next life. Certainly grieve him for a bit, but then PLEASE, put your grief down and pick up your heart in celebration of Rupert and the amazing gift he gave you when he chose you and pulled you up from the depths of despair. Choose to remember him as a hero. I know I will. God bless you, Rupert....thank you for what you did for our friend....you are loved....now and forever.

I'm so very very sorry. Rupert is such a wonderful, special little guy. I pray that you give each other comfort in the little time you have left together, and I pray you have the strength to do what's best for him if it comes down to that.

I'm like Susi, I think everything happens for a reason. You and Rupert were given to each other because you needed each other. Rupert gave you a reason to live, he gave you strength. And now you have to love him enough, have enough strength, to keep living for both of you.

Words can't express how sorry I am.

I am so sorry about the horrible news. Rupert is such a wonderful cat!
I completely understand about your depression and Rupert pulling you out of it.
I also have severe depression and this was a bad year. If it wasnt for Nofuratu being with me constantly I dont know what I would do. (Although, my mother's suicide has helped me realise that I cant do THAT to my family and friends...even if I feel like I want to die)
Its not fair that this is happening to you and Rupert, but he picked you for a good reason. Your love for him will tell you when its the right time to let him go.
You CAN do this! You WILL get through this. And when the time comes to put him to sleep, we will be here to support you. Susi is right, you cant negate the miracle Rupert performed by slipping back into the hole after he is gone.
I'll be thinking about you and Rupert every day! And we will all go through this with you!!

I am so sorry to read this. I can hardly see to type through the tears. I have had to make the decision for one of my kitties many years ago and I still think about it. He gave you your life back and you must not let his work slip away. I guess Susi said it best.

I will be thinking about you guys. Give Rupert a snuggle for me.

(Susi, as I was reading Spidy's original post, I had this exact same thought.)

It's so sad that you and your family have to go through this. My heart goes out to you. Enjoy Rupert for the time you have left, and accept the love and joy he was sent to give to you. Sometimes these special little souls are given to us for a very short time, but in that short time they give a lifetime of love and healing.

I am so very sorry. I'm writing this through tears. I have 11 urns on the highboy in my bedroom. Each one of my babies had a private cremation. My heart does something strange these days....skips a beat or two then resumes. I know why my heart does this...it's been broken so many times with each loss of a 4 legged baby. You might think I am strange cold or both but myself becomes devistated over the loss of a baby .... I don't have the same reaction with humans though.

NightSpidy, having lost my first sphynx kitten to FIP, I understand how you feel. It is a horrible thing to go through and know that you do so much to make them feel better and that nothing works. Take all the time you can to snuggle and love on Rupert. And when he goes remember that he knew how much you love him and will miss him everyday. When the time comes my dear Emushere will be waiting to greet him across the Rainbow Bridge. BIG HUGS to you and Rupert!

I am sorry Rupert is very sick and Orion has a heart murmur.
Ty my sisters Bengal that was pts had the same symptoms and they were sure he had FIP but after the necropsy it turned out it was a liver problem ect.
She only had him 2 months.
If you would like to talk to her about you can.
She can help you.
Please do not get depressed again that will not help you.
You need to stay strong for the other cats.
I am crying also.

It breaks my heart to read this, and brings to mind my last month with Douche. I hope you and Rupert can create warm and wonderful memories in the time you have left with each other. I believe with my entire heart that Douchie was my soulmate, and I also believe he will be brought back to me. I pray Rupert won't leave you long, and will come back in a healthy body. You'll recognize him when he does. You aren't alone in your grief.

I have to agree. I see my dear little lost Singe more and more everyday in Chimere. She looks out of her eyes like he did, she repeats some of the same silly things he did in the very same way, she cuddles in the very same place on my pillow that he did. She mews like Singe, she picked his favorite toy as hers. So many things that can't be accidental. The only thing that makes sense to me is he knew I missed him so bad that he was willing to take the trip back in the body of a little pink girl.

Love is a tender thing and fate an ultimate learning experience. You, your loved ones, Rupert and Orion will be in my thoughts. Please remember that depression is a disease. Make sure you take care of yourself and the disease. Then you will have time and energy to embrace another nude feline.
