Hairlesslove, what part of Florida are you in?

If you're looking for a vet, I would recommend first seeing if you have any sphynx breeders in your area. If you do, call them and see what vet they use. Then you can be sure you're using a vet that has a lot of experience with the breed. If you don't have a breeder nearby, there are several websites were you can read reviews of local veterinarians. Start with one that has good reviews and then call them to see if they have had any sphynx patients.

I can't say I would be comfortable with a vet who had never treated -or even seen in person- a sphynx before. You shouldn't have to educate your vet, it should be the other way around!

I go to this vet because my aunt is the vet tech & I have gone there 4 ever so I don't want to switch vets but I do need to find out if they need to treat Maggie diff than a regular cat. Thanks for the info

There are 11 sphynx that go to our vet and 2 are mine.
Most them have only been there a few times.
You need to make sure the vet knows the ears get oily and its not ear mites.
When Cleo got sick and went to the er vet once they said she had a fever when she did not.
That was when I first got her.

There is no "Sphynx specialist" MaggiesMom, there may be vets with some Sphynx experience out there. It is still a cat, with small differences. If you find a good vet , he should take some time to read up about the breed. One of the reasons i created this forum is for our members to share experiences, thoughts and good information about those "small differences" that we have experienced and have become successful in dealing with those differences, and it's important for us to share the results amongst each other and to our vets. That is why it is ever so important to relay information to each other so we have a log here on Sphynx Lair, to help new sphynx owners and old as well. Dont forget if you cant find something on the site , we have a search option up top, where you can search for a particular answer. Lots of good info on this site from experienced Sphynx owners.
Hope this helps!

I so much agree with our Admin. This site has been phenominal for me. Don't know what I would do without all of you guys.
I work for my vet, so I wouldn't feel comfortable going somewhere else. However, she does have some experience with Sphynx, and is very open minded. Loves discussing medical issues, and is thrilled to have Sammie & Lilly as patients! She is very excited to be learning more about our gorgeous breed. I told her about this site, and she agrees that I am fortunate to have such a wealth of information at my fingertips!
So a big thank you - to ALL of you!
Sheryl, Sammie & Lilly

Mews2much- The vet asked me about ear mites with Harry. He definetly has a lot of ear wax! I'm slowly working on that. Of course he haaatess to have his ears cleaned so I'm doing a little each day to get him used to the process.

Also you have to really be happy with your vet! You have to like and trust him or her!
Over the course of years with all my pets I am on my 4th vet:Surprise: and the one I have now I can't say enough great things about and I trust him 100%

Tell the vet it is oil and make sure you do not get meds for ear mites.
My new sphynx is sneezing and the breeder wants her on clavamox before it turns into something.
The vet wants to wait.
I am getting clavamox from somewhere else.
The breeder told me where to get it.

I ran into the exact same problem but I was also prepared for that after doing my research. I knew what to tell them and what to expect. What made me feel so much better was my vet started doing her own research on the breed and each time I go there she has a wealth of information for me. She even found me some sites to buy clothes for her  The way I see it is if you even have an inkling of uneasiness and you don't feel like your vet is doing anything to research all the needs that Maggie will have then you need to switch, no matter how long you've used or known that vet. If you feel comfortable then Maggie will too.

One of the other vets I used to use always wanted to test for ear mites everytime I went, she insisted I was wrong? Well we do not use her anymore:Angry:
I do have the kittens tested their first visit to the vet just so the new owners have something saying it was done so when they go to the vet they choose they have the info and do not have to test.

We only see 2 of the Doc's at the hospital we use... I have known them for 10 years so they are pretty good about doing what I want plus I've worked with them too. Sometimes the ear build up can have high bacteria in it so as a kitten if the gunk is a lot, it isn't a bad thing to have checked.

I have had my Vet. for years. i talked to him when I first thought of getting Harley and what I was Doing.. He told me up front he did not know enough, and asked me to find out what Vet the breeder used so that he could call him and find out more about the breed and what he had learned...He also did alot of studing up on Sphynx so that when Harley came home he was very prepared for him...I am 100% happy with the relationship we have and the care he gets..I think talking to him before Harley came home helped ease the transition very much for us...Good luck finding a good one..
