Hi im a brand new sphynx owner and im happy i found this site! Jax is 12 wks old. I did lots of research on food and decided on wellness core dry kitten food to leave out all day. I also giv him wet food each night. I heard with the dry, youre supposed to keep it the same unless theres an issue. With the wet food though, does the same rule apply or am i able to rotate the brands of wet? Also how much wet do u give in combination with dry and how often per day?

I always stick with what seems to work. I see too many with tummy or skin problems related to the food they eat. I do 1/2 can wet in morning and night no leave dry out for grazing during the day. BTW welcome to Sphynxlair.

@Kristen G , Happy Jax Gotcha!
Looking forward to your journey pics and tales with us!
With newbies I use what food they had if it worked well and/or slowly mix in the new brand food
For about two weeks so their tummies n bum get used to the change.

(Ironically I am looking into wellness core -wild game -for my dog since the brand I fed is no longer supplied to the online site I shop)

I free feed dry food (little piggies have a higher metabolisms :)
and 1/2 can am/pm
I personally stick with the same brand formulas that work as to not upset tummies n bums.

I do add a little l-lysine powder In the wet food as an immune booster.
Here is a good link

Keep us updated how Jax likes the wellness core :)

Ok thank u i will let u know how it goes. When you say half can morning and night is it the 3oz or 5.5? I also bought wellness wet cans but didnt giv it yet because the vet recommended royal canin babycat for the wet since hes 3 months. He also recommended royal canin dry but im gonna stick to the wellness if be adjusts well to it because the ingredients seem better. Do you do same brand dry and wet

@Kristen G , my breeder I adopted from does feed RC baby cat wet food

(Side note : I read ingredient labels too :)
You can also call the food companies and ask for the calcium /phosphurus ratio
Of the food .. Male cats can be prone to urninary blockages so I watch the calcium /Phos numbers
When looking at foods (lesson personally learned )

I actually feed one brand dry food and another brand wet food because of my picky kitties

@Kristen G we did use Wellness. One of them had a bit mushier poop on it. Nothing horrible, but just mushier. We have one girl on UR food so she is not on grain free which we prefer, but you gotta do what you gotta do. The other 2 are on Merrick grain free. All have nice firm poop.

I was feeding Acana Grasslamds but the new USA formula gave my 4 the worse greasy skin-
orijen was too high in protein for my kitties bums

So I went with a food brand my dog show breeder friend feeds -

I have been feeding Nutrisource cat and kitten food for about a year now with clear skin , cleaner ears and waaay less greasy skin - I don't even get the "brown stains " on my cream colored sheets :)

very happy with the Nutrisource cat and kitten in blue bag -
Cat Food Recipes, NutriSource Cat Food

I have found some of my pets do better on grain inclusive
My other kitty does eat Fromm Game Bird recipe for her IBS

I like ingredients of other brands better but case in point feeding what works for my 4
And I like no recalls soth Nutrisource

my first baby sphynx I started with RC baby cat wet food

(Now my four adults will only eat Proplan urinary focus canned with some l-Lysine in it -
I started using this after my one adoptee had urinary crystals and refused all the wet food sold at the vet -
So In desperation I tried a wet food with similar phosphorus % as the vet sold food .
Ironically , he gobbled it up amd have been crystal free for years ..)

Merrick seems to have great ingredients similar to wellness. Merrick seemed to be the favorite amongst the workers at petco. I still went with the wellness though, hes not fully transitioned yet from purina but once he is, i will have him stay on wellness a few weeks n see how stools are. If it isnt good, merrick may be my next try

I'm following this thread because I'm looking into changing Naruu's food...I love Wellness products, always have but I've noticed her poop is always just a bit mushy and I'm constantly having to wipe her little butt or she's running around with a dirty butt!:arghh::vomit:

Right now she's on Wellness Core Grain Free Kitten formula, free feed dry and half a can 2x a day.

Also, hello and welcome to the family @Kristen G !!:D

Welcome to sphynxlair, good to have you.
1/2 can 5.5 oz in the am/pm.
Feed kitten food until 1 yr old.
If you do switch anytime. Do it slowly.
Or it will cause upset stomach and diarrhea.
1st week 1/4 New 3/4 old food
2nd week 1/2 New 1/2 old
3rd week 3/4 New 1/4 old
4th week change completely.
Free feed dry.

@Kristen G I use the Wellness Core Grain Free Kitten canned food also, it's a 5.5 ounce purple can that matches the kibble food. And let me clarify...right now, she get's 1/4 can 2x a day (morning and night) but I'm thinking about increasing it to 1/2 a can 2x a day now that she's getting a little bigger.

Welcome to the Lair! You've gotten all kinds of wonderful advice so I won't confuse you and add any more brands to your list...just read labels and if you change things, make sure you do it slowly so as not to be too upsetting to your baby's belly! We chose a wet brand with a higher moisture %, our vet recommended watching for that because they use the moisture to help with their high metabolism. It works wonderfully for our lil loves, we have had no poop issues with either of our kittens and they have a good variety of flavors to use different proteins to switch it up with.
I hope we get to see lots of pictures and hear all about your adventures together!!!

We switched to Merrick from Nature's Variety Instinct foods at the beginning of this year. They're both great brands from what I can tell. However, when Lady Flufferton was going on 6 months old I wanted more varieties in the flavors for her. Merrick has a slew of flavors as well as the late or minced options. She still getting the kitten hard food for grazing daily (this is her last bag... awe, my baby's going to be one soon!) and a third to a half of a can of the wet food twice a day. It took us a month to fully transition brands to keep her tummy in a good place, but also because these were all new flavors and textures. Now she gets excited about her meals and definitely has favorites, she runs over to snuggle with the remnants on her chin when she's really happy with her meals. We're going to transition into adult kibble in about a month.

So sorry I didn't see this sooner...I was sick for a week and didn't get on much. We use Dave's and Weruva.

With wet food, I've always given a different kind of flavor or brand every day lol. My furkitty does well on this and really likes it. He wont't eat the same food over and over now. Sometimes it's raw, sometimes canned, but it changes. And theres always dry food during the day when I'm at work. My sphynx is still a kitten and at first I used the same food she was already on, but I have been switching her canned around and this hasn't seemed to cause her any issues yet. I also give probiotics to help with their stools.

The dry though, i always try to slowly transition them to avoid tummy issues. Wet food rotating is easier on tummies than dry food.

Oh, and about moisture levels, i mix warm water to the canned food. They wont eat it without now lol. I got this idea from the breeder and Tigerlily will not eat pate unless its mixed in warm water. I dont mind that she gets the extra water. I found out furkitty Azure also likes it this way. Makes the food warm and smelly though but im guessing they like that lol. Just got to make sure its not too hot for them.

Hi all, as an update, Jax is loving the wellness core dry kitten food and wellness complete health kitten wet food! I will stick with this and maybe just change the flavor of the wet food from time to time so he doesnt get bored. the wet kitten food i give him is chicken flavored but wellness also makes a turkey flavored kitten wet food under the wellness core line.
