I’m in hope to get some advice, I posted already to get some advice on my sphynx’s paws but I’m now struggling with another issue. In hopes to get more advice. Back story-
I rescued a senior sphynx 2 years ago (they think she’s approx. 10-11 years old) anyways she had some ulcers that formed on her paw and needed some antibiotics and long story short my vet accidentally injected her with 3x the normal dose of metacam (NSAID). She called to tell me what happened and was very sorry. She did 3 days of follow up blood work and we gave her 3 bolus’s of fluid. However in July her CR blood work was 89 and now after this metacam dose it’s 132 (1 week after the incident).
The vet isn’t worried and explained if it was in fact an AKI the CR would have spiked much higher like to 200.
But I’m still worried. And the vet is saying we can do a urine analysis on the cat for my peace of mind. But do you think that is necessary. This cat Hates being at the vet and would be considered a very difficult cat to collect from or do any treatments on. The urine collection would be done with ultrasound and a needle.
After those 3 Days of pokes 2 weeks ago when the incident happened she was very traumatized. I don’t want to put her though anything unnecessary. However she still has these paw ulcers and the vet thinks it’s an autoimmune issue so would like to start her on the steroid predislone, 10mg a day and then ween her off. However because of the possible kidney damage I’m hesitant to start.

Do you think it’s worth doing a urine analysis that’s slightly invasive or do you think it’s fine to just go with the blood work that was done one week after the incident and trust that there isn’t excessive kidney damage done?

Is there any reason you can’t collect the urine sample yourself at home and then deliver it to the vet? I know @Yoda mom has done so by stalking the cat to the litter box and sneaking a ladle under them.

Oh I didn’t realize that was an option. My vet never mentioned I could collect on own

The urine collection process at the vet is kind of a big deal (having watched them do it to my cat) but to be honest, I would be more worried about kidney damage. You need to have proof, if there is damage, that it happened NOW - not like 2 years from now if you are dealing with kidney disease have them tell you that it just happened right then. This is how I think anyway.

@Pak13 , oh my gosh 3x's the dosage.
I do not like cystocentesis needle aspiration draws personally as to mirror what condocommando shared. another reason is that my dog (has bladder cancer and needle aspirations can seed spread cancer cells if poked by needle aspiration)

***ask your vet for "nosorb" litter pellets. last week my vet gave me some no charge, of nosorb and collection vile/glove kit. it keep pee from absorbing then can use the kit to get the sample from the box. my vet said empty clean box just put in the black zorb litter to try to collect a sample. but to be honest , still trying. but wanted to share the option to try to get urine sample at home. my other kitty I was able to put a spoon underneath as he peed. the vet can do a manual palpated draw of urine. I may have to go back to vet for that if I can't catch a sample. my macie is traumatized going to vet too. I get it.

my vet told me if I get a sample at home, I can refrigerate it and bring it in.

Thank you all! I appreciate the advice and recommendations. Ya honestly it’s been pretty traumatizing on me as well. The vet told me about the mistake and felt very bad. Where as I wonder if it was a different vet would they have owned up to the mistake. So I am thankful my vet was honest about it.
But it defiantly has been a hard process emotionally to go though.
they didn’t give me the option of the collection at home unfortunately so I only said take the sample but only if it’s not going to be traumatizing on my cat. If it’s too difficult just leave it

@Pak13 , well, my macie won't go in the nosorb litter. so will be trying the dollar store soup ladle . I also will try a bit of tinfoil in the litter box. they only need a small amount. can refrigerate overnight. being it is friday I will have to wait to try to free catch urine sample on sunday night or monday
