hello!

Wondering what your experiences have been with having sphynx teeth cleaned under anesthesia!

My beloved sphynx Lisa is 8 years old and healthy, the vet recommended a dental cleaning under anesthesia as preventative care. I am nervous because I know sphynx are prone to heart issues and can be sensitive to anesthesia so I am hesitant to do an elective procedure. Of course I don’t want to sleep on something that could be necessary for keeping her teeth healthy either! Would love any advice or to hear your experiences with sedated dental cleanings,

Make sure Ketamine is not used as anesthesia. If possible if you have not had a heart scan done, I would suggest one before the procedure. If heart scan is not something you can afford than a ProBNP blood test to look for any heart issues that might be underlying might help as well.

These are great tips thank you! First I’m hearing about the blood test and to avoid the ketamanine anesthesia, I appreciate it!

@Lisalovesbutter , echoing catzzzmeows reply.

glad you are asking questions.

(for me , there are never routine surgeries, and always a risk under anesthesia to be aware of. they always want you to sign if something goes wrong do you want intervention measures on the paperwork day of surgery to be aware of too.

( I have seen some do fine, others not to be totally honest.)
I had a scary incident with my pup and his heart with a dental , the vets office staff still talks about to this day. )

its a personal decision. knowledge is power.

(for me, with my seniors, if nothing blazing wrong, I am not putting under anesthesia. my" previous " vet always wanted this and that done everytime I walked in the door.. )

**. I trusted my gut.

have you started a home dental brushing routine?

members will surely chime in with their sphynx dental cleaning under anesthesia experiences.

you can also ask about "senior panel blood work". I have charts marked NO KETAMINE and even write it down on any paper work I sign for surgeries. I have a good long chat with my vet about pre tests, anesthesia etc.
My vet uses Isoflurane gas inhalant , has a tech call me during surgeries to give update. I have after care instructions and any pain meds picked up before picking up from surgery so I have it on hand.

You can also ask about maxiguard gel. my vet carries it and I get on chewy. its a liquid rub on gums. there are also CET toothpastes and cat tooth brushes.

hugs n head smooches to sweet Lisa
