We have been blessed this last 16 months to have the love of Dita. She turned 13 on 08-29 and was so full of energy. Dita came to live with us after being rehomed approximately four times. I know that she finally found comfort and happiness. She made us all so happy. She led a rough life before she came to live with us and passed through many hands.

When she first came to our house she hated her paws touched, let alone nails clipped. She had gotten to the point where she would let me clip her nails while she sat on my lap. I could play around with her toes too  an action she never allowed before.

Friday I took her and Savannah in for a check-up. My daughter was diagnosed with Giardia so I wanted to make sure the kitties didn't have it. Dita had been missing the cat box and she had the runs pretty bad. I found out today the test was negative for parasites and negative for Giardia.

She never lost her appetite and she continued to drink. Saturday she was her normal, happy loving kitty. I was woken up Sunday by the kids telling me something was wrong with Dita. She fell over trying to walk.

As soon as my son handed her to me in the blanket he wrapped her in, I knew. She wasn't moving and cold to the touch. She was still breathing and a little life left in her eyes. I wrapped her up and placed her on my bed on a heating pad. I had all the kids say goodbye before we took her to the emergency vet. Savannah gave Dita one last kiss.

I knew in the car that she was leaving us. We had decided to have them put her down if she was still struggling when we got there.

They wrapped her in a new blanket and put the IV in her arm and handed her back to me. We were in a private room with low lights and couches. Dita decided to let go in my arms at 11:30 am on Sunday morning. I know she knew it was time.

She slept with my four year old every night and would come find him at bed time. He had a little trouble falling asleep last night. We moved the two Shih Tzu's with their crate in to his room to help with the loss.

I am so grateful I was home and able to hold my sweet girl. Our lives were more than blessed to have her with us even for the short time we had her. She left this world a happy girl and that gives me some comfort.

I will always love my "Old Lady" Dita, she will forever be in our hearts.

My condolences to you and your family on the loss of your beloved Dita. She looked like such a lovely and elegant lady. I am sure it meant a lot to her to have you there as she crossed over Rainbow Bridge.

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.-

My heart goes out to you and your family - two & four legged alike - during this hard time. I'm glad she passed without pain or struggle, but held closely by those who loved her most... RIP beautiful Dita, you will be missed

Oh, Tawny! I am profoundly saddened by the loss of your lovely Dita. I know that she knew how lucky she was to finally be where she belonged--surrounded by her very own family who adored her. And I believe you hit the nail right on the head when you said you think she was happy. I believe that too. Thank you for easing her passage across the Rainbow Bridge--to pass peacefully in the arms of your family must have been a real comfort. Thank you for being brave enough to hold her as you gave her the final gift there was to give. May you be blessed with nothing but the sure knowledge that you were a great mom to her. Rest in peace, lovely Dita--no more pain, no more fears, you are whole again and no doubt snuggling with the angels, bragging about what a great family you had here. You were loved so very much--and that, is everything.

Hugs to you, Tawny--may you have nothing but wonderful memories of this little girl whose life you surely saved.
Much love,
Susi

Aw, Bless your heart. I am so sorry. I am so greatful you got her.
I know she was tossed around alot, this is so sad. I can't understand this.
But, I'm greatful she finally had a loving home and family that loved her and wanted her.
She left here happy. That's worth it all.

I couldn't reply when I read the post yesterday because I was crying too hard. I'm so sorry for your loss. Her story is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. And, although her journey may have been rough, the destination (your home and heart) was beautiful. I have no doubt that the 16 months spent with you will be all that she carries with her over the bridge.

I am having Dita's photo put on her favorite pink blanket she brought when she came to live with us. This way Savannah can always cuddle with her Dita.
