My ole senior rescue Rottie now nearly 13, is winding down in the cycle of life - the part I hate sooo much

His bones are growing old beneath my cuddles- he still has a spark in his eye, is watchful alert , shakes jolly ball and eats- just slower for the hind end to rise after a senior nap- will add some tramadol and gabapentin in his morning cream cheese n chicken dog treat of microlactin.

I will be his best friend as he is mine through the years-
I will always ask myself - "would he want to be here today"?
And "is there a realistic chance he will have better days in the future?

I promised Duke , (my MarmaDuke, our Dukahontas as Jimmy calls him)
I will not hold on for my sake, my comfort-
I truly believe it is not only quality of life but also quality of death to cross to the bridge world with dignity

Please send prayers for more good days than bad

My ole MarmaDuke ate , walked , played, barked watch dog alert, cuddled and is now taking a senior nap comfortably on his bolstered bed .... Today is a good day.. :)

Here is a pic of ole Duke now
And a much younger picture of him with rescued dog ^ Max^ ( Duke on the right)

We walked miles n miles together.....

each end of the leash holds an incredible journey of smiles

Please consider rescue :)

@Yoda mom so beautiful said and so true. It's notbonly quality of life that matters but also qualitybof death.

I wish you a lot of good days with Duke, enjoy the days that are left as much as you can. And I wish you all the strenght you need to be able to let him go when times has come.

Duke has a great life with you and you and your rescues show how great it can be to adopt. Thanks!

What a wonderful tribute to your boy. I think it is great when people honor the living and share why their baby is so special here and now and not just when they pass. I hope he has many good days ahead of him and commend you knowing the last and most precious gift is letting them live a full life filled with dignity, love and little pain until it is their time to cross that bridge.

@Catzzzmeow , I love football - not lol- jimmy loves it and put us each in the weekly pooL -I pick based on where I lived in the US, where my pets are or were from :) hope I win at least One week !
Duke could care less- he just wants to watch the woods quietly growling at the critters moving about on the other side of the acreage 8 ft fence- he is ready for bed now- sleepy sleep time for him- tramadol and added gabapentin kicking in

@Hairless Blessing, thank you..
This morning I sat with Duke ,talked to him and watched him sleep in a little longer than usual on this Sunday morning - he got up for breakfast and his wiggly Rottie stub gave kisses hello when Jimmy got up... His mind so sharp and alert as his body grows tired- then he gets a sprint pep in his step for a short trip by the garden .. Alert to all around him as he stands so stoic in the colorfu garden by my side. We take it all in quietly peacefully together ..
I couldn't help but think of the miles of life in the years we have walked together .. I have been blessed.. And then We walk slowly back inside for his mid day nap. Every step together by my side now more a gift than ever imagined.
The tears fill my eyes as I thank him for being my guardian , my friend ...

That breaks my heart, in a good way and in a sad way.
Bless you.

Another rottie lovers girl crossed the other day with cancer and someone wrote a quote

" don't cry because it's over , smile because it happened"

Every day Duke joins me in the garden , I smile because it happened today - each time a blessing -

Today was a good day

Wish you and Duke (and the rest of the zoo) a happy and good day today!

We are enjoying good days together and the gabapentin is helping his mobility -
He is like a puppy in the brain in ole bones-
I called my vet who will make home crossing when it is time-

In the meantime , we are enjoying each day together -
He takes a slow stroll in the garden, wiggles his stub playing with jolly ball , eats and then naps at my feet-

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers
