Lenore started having seizures last night and this morning. She's never ever done this before. She stiffened up and did what I can only describe as a "Frankenstein" walk and had no balance. They lasted about 20 seconds, and the she was totally fine.

Took her to the "vet" since she already had an appointment. Her regular vet wasn't there, and the idiot that saw her - and who obviously didn't care for her - offered to go ahead and put her under anesthesia and spay her anyway!:Angry: When she's having seizures!:Furious: Thank God, I'm smart enough to say no, but what about someone else?

They did a complete blood panel ($120:ThumbsDown:) and we're waiting on the results. She vomited yesterday, so the chances that it's something metabolic are much greater than the chances that she has epilepsy. I'm just really really hoping that it's something simple that can be treated quickly and easily!

Does anyone have any experience with anything like this?

She's never been scanned and they've never heard a murmur as far as I know. We're thinking she may have gotten into something that she shouldn't have, but for the life of us we can't figure out what it could have been. The vet said it could be something like a virus, acute poisoning, or epilepsy that has just presented out of the blue. Since she was vomiting yesterday, I tend to think it's a virus or poisoning. We won't know anything until her bloodwork comes back, and I am beside myself trying to wait patiently.

If her bloodwork doesn't show anything out of the ordinary, the next step is either an MRI or CT scan to check for tumors or lesions on the brain which I just can't do.

If it comes to that and I can't get vet assistance or a payment plan, I'll have to put her up for adoption to someone who can care for her like she needs. I really don't want it to get that far or be something that bad, but I have to think of her needs first.

I am so sorry to hear about Lenore.
DO NOT even think as far as having to give her up, though.
There are credit cards made for this sort of thing.
I'd also be more than glad to help a bit and I'm sure others would too.
We can do a Lenore drive if needed. After all, you two are family.

Oh noes! Poor Lenore... Don't even think about giving her up already, even if the bloodwork gives no results, who is to say it'll happen again? So until there's no way out, those thoughts must be banned from your head and replaced with loving Lenore even more.
Fingers & paws crossed for a simple solution!

I know the gut wrenching feeling of not knowing what something is wrong and the worst part is thinking how much it would cost (knowing it should be the least of your worries). I had this feeling with Hairry and his foot. I have seen seizures happen once or twice in pets and it never happen again, then I have seen it happen over and over. I know this isn’t comforting but it’s good to know that others have gone thru this and it is treatable. Keep thinking positive Lenore needs a strong Mommy and please don’t think of letting her go!

I finally got her results back - I had to call them, they didn't call me - and her neutrophil white cell count was up over 19k (12k is normal) and her proteins are elevated, so she has some sort of infection that could be causing the seizures. We just have no idea what kind of infection and where she could have gotten it from. We went back and they gave her a shot of "convenia", an antibiotic that lasts 2 weeks, and her regular vet was there to look her over like she should have been this morning, and said her intestines also feel a bit swollen. If it continues after her infection is gone, then we reevaluate.

This was the first time I've ever had a problem with that office, but I was appalled at the behavior of that "vet" this morning. He came in and very clearly was disgusted by her appearance, and did NOT want to treat her. He literally did nothing but pick her up and carry her to the back so the techs could work on her. Didn't even look at her teeth. When we went back this afternoon, her regular vet was there, and she is very very good. She checked her all over, gave her some medicine, looked over her chart with me, loved on her a bit, everything a vet should do. I'll take her back there, but I'll never let anyone treat her except her regular vet unless it's a dire emergency.

I am so thankful for all of the love and support and for all of my friends and Sphynx family. Reading all of your responses made me tear up because I was so moved! Just knowing that so many people were thinking about her and praying for her and me this morning really helped to calm my nerves a bit. I can never express the gratitude and love I feel for each and every one of you! I am truly blessed to be able to call you all friends!!! If there is ever anything I can do for any of you, don't hesitate to ask! THANK YOU!!!!!!! Lenore says thank you and she loves her hairless family!

I will do that! She has had all kinds of loves and snuggles and treats today! She terrified mommy and daddy this morning! Give Graddy some loves from me!

I was so angry! He just acted like she was a disgusting creature that he didn't want to touch, and if I hadn't been intelligent enough to know that anesthesia + seizures = not a good idea, she could have died. He would have been responsible, since it's his job to know all of that and provide care! Completely incompetent. My husband was livid!!! I'm seriously considering writing a review. Lenore was very uncomfortable with him, it was visible that he scared her and she picked up on his attitude, and when we went back and saw her regular vet this afternoon, she was visibly calmer, at ease around her, and it was much better. I was so relieved when her regular vet walked into the room this afternoon!! Having a vet that truly cares about their patients makes all the difference in the world!

You should DEFINITELY write a review! That is unacceptable! Sorry you went through that. So glad it's over. Hope you never have to see him again (especially Lenore)

Poor baby feels bad and has been hiding under the pillow all afternoon. I think she's afraid we're going to take her to that awful, mean, scary, place that pokes and prods and stabs holes in her like Swiss cheese for a third time today!

Poor baby! I hope the medication works and that's the end of this problem. ::HUGS:: So glad you knew to stop the other mean vet from doing the spay. Did you mention the horrible treatment by the bad vet to the good vet? We had a horrible experience with the fill in vet at our regular vet's office and now refuse to take any of our cats there when the regular vet is on vacation and SHE's there.

Awww, poor baby. I hope she is feeling like her self in no time and it isn't anything serious.

Good for you for following your gut and not allowing the surgery! I lost a dog during a spay. She was spayed by another vet in the practice whom I had never met and was never told that it wouldn't be my regular vet doing the surgery.

Please keep us posted! I am really starting to feel that The Lair is like a super extended family and we will take care of each other! Hugs :)
