Hateful Vet because of breed?

So my baby had been acting weird and was peeing outside the litter box and I also noticed blood in her pee, so I took her to a local vet to get her checked out. The vet told me that she had a UTI, and that she also has a heart murmur. But after telling me that, the vet went on a thirty minute rant on how I am a terrible person for owning a sphynx and supporting a mutated breed. She also went on to tell me how I am an ignorant person for wanting such an expensive animal and how I just had to have an exotic animal. I was completely astonished by everything she told me. I have never been treated like such crap by a vet just because of the breed of my cat. Even when I got her fixed, I was never treated like that, the people actually loved her there. Has this happened to anyone else? What kind of vet should I look for now?

I most definitely wouldn't be going back to that bet if I was you and if she wasn't the owner of the vet surgery I'd be inclined not to write a horrible letter but would write to the owner and nicely explain how you were treated and that you'll be looking for another vet I wouldn't go back there even if they offered me free service

That is just not acceptable. I am sorry you were spoken to in such a manner., especially by a vet of all people! There is a section in this forum you can post and inquire if anyone knows of a good vet in your area. You can also make calls to your veterinary hospitals in your area and ask if they currently have Sphynx clients. I hope your baby feels better soon. Have the records transferred over to new vet so they can keep an eye on the murmur etc.

Sorry to hear your baby isn't well.
Hope she will feel better soon

The only person being ignorant is the vet! You come to her with a sphynx cat, she examined your baby, comes with a diagnosis and then she goes on a 30 minute rant...? If she think sphynx are a mutated breed and you being a nasty, ignorant person then I guess she didn't want your money???

I'm sorry you had to listen to that kind of rubbish, specially at the moment when you were concerned about your baby.

@Catzzzmeow did gave you good advice to find a good vet. I have fantastic vet, she owns the father of my boys but I live in the Netherlands so that's no use to you.

I'm sorry your little one ins't feeling well.
I hope that she starts to come around soon!

I would 100% be looking for a new vet! How dare anyone talk to you like that! I'm floored!
I'm sorry that at a time when you where already stressed because of a sick baby you also had to deal with someone else's ignorance.
I know that we have all faced moments with people not understanding our little ones or not liking them.

I would be writing a letter to the clinic, I would also make sure to share your story locally with anyone who would listen. No one needs to hear these types of thing when they go to a doctor for help!

@Shyan , Inexcusable vet side manner

I Want to send speedy recovery hugs n vibes! What is your babies name?
Did you go home with a treatment plan or need to find another vet ASAP?

My vet as many do not see many Sphynx- but I will say she is awesome and knowledgeable about he breed- obviously did her homework-
She has taken great care of my adopted Sphynx who had a UTI- she knew all about their ears too :) and didn't try to sell me or do everything under the sun

Was difficult here in a small town for a local vet Sphynx specific or cat only vet-

As long as you find a vet you can have great communication and confidence , I think you will be fine- the advice given for the thread vet search here on the lair is great!

Please keep us posted on the UTI recovery
**There are some great links here on the Lair about food phosphorus levels and UTI's , given wet food etc

thats not very professional of her... very ignorant... I would use this analogy to put her in her place... its like adopting a colorblind child (colorblindness is a gene mutation in humans) and bringing it to a doctor and the doctor telling that you're a horrible person for adopting them and supporting the mutated "breed"... it doesn't make sense... Best way to deal with ignorant people is not to deal with them at all...

Wow. Sorry your baby is sick. Lair prayers for baby kitty.

Holy rotten vet, Batman!!!!! If you lived in Pittsburgh PA, no brainier, I'd tell you to go to my vet because he's awesome. And, he's a Sphynx dad.

I hope your baby and you are feeling better today. Vets are people and some people are opinionated in a very outspoken way. I am with the others--write a letter to the vetinary clinic and find another vet. Good luck to you going forward.

Wow :wideyed: I am very surprised to hear that coming from a vet! I'm sorry you had to sit through that while worrying about your sick baby :(

I second what the others said. Depending on their response (if they even do) to your letter/e-mail, I would also post reviews about it on both Google and Yelp, and call that vet out by name. It will help possible future customers decide if they want to give their $ to a place with such unprofessional staff.

I hope your little girl is feeling better!

I am appalled at your vet. I would also report her and let her know that spreading the word to anyone that will listen about the way I was treated.

Hi Julie!!!!!
Long time no see!!!! Lil is great! She's been having an active social life (birthday party season!!!) Elvy is as foul-mouthed as ever! ;) lol. Kidding, she's my love! Tish is awesome but a concern for the lady mama. I think she burned her "knees" roasting herself on the Internet box!
How's my Julie? and Lady Cleo? And Stinky Marky? And The Furries? And Adam?

Glad to hear that Lil is having fun as a social butterfly. Cleo is also pretty foul-mouthed as shown in her latest post--http://sphynxlair.com/community/threads/how-to-take-a-bath-by-cleopatra.31181/#post-374703.
I know you saw the post about Marky's first birthday, and we are down to only one furry. But Sydney is doing very well. I am on Spring Break (yay!!!) and sewing and spinning yarn like crazy. Bob's good and Adam too. Hope we see you a bit more around the Lair!

Wow report, report, report! I am a new cat mom so I don't know the in and outs of a lot of things but one thing I do know is customer service. I work as a secretary at a mental health facility. You do not speak to your patients that way...ever...and although sometimes one might want to give a patient their two-cents. Professionalism is number 1 in my book. Patients don't care how you feel. They want the service you are providing and that doctor should know that... the vet should leave his or her personal ideas at home where they belong or they might find themselves out of a job.

Wow! I live in a very small Midwestern town, and finding a vet that was knowledgeable was a concern for me. Our first day there, I learned that there were at least 2 other Sphynx owners in my town. The Bambino breed was "new" to them, but everyone (including the receptionists) fell in love with her and wanted to know all about her. THAT is the way it should be!! Please report this lady... Hugs to you and your baby...

If any of you need a vet in NE Florida, I'd be happy to recommend my current vet - everyone at their office has been wonderful! That wasn't the case with the first vet I saw when I moved to the area - so I had no problems finding a new vet (and I am much, much happier both with her and her staff than I ever was with the first place!)

If you haven't already , please add the vet info here in your own thread. :)
