hi. We are on our way to the Emerg Vet with Loki right now.
As it's not our normal vet and they may not deal with many Sphynx cats... Can you please help with what's normal or not temp wise etc.

I know not to use ketamine.

He has been coughing for the last few hours. Almost like he's gonna puke and kind of like dry heaving a few times but no puke.
He ate at 6pm. No vomit and no diarrhea. Drank water at that time too.

But he's still coughing. And seems a bit tired now, where he seemed normal earlier.
I'm erring on caution and bringing him to the vet, cause he's our baby and I don't wanna wait til morning for our regular vet.

Please send positive thoughts.
I'll update soon.

@Nicolemorgan I'm so sorry that Loki isn't himself and scaring you and Nicole. I'm upset hearing this. I hope it's nothing and he comes home tonight with you both. I'm praying for Loki to have nothing wrong.

I'll be thinking of you all. BIGGEST HUGS!

@Nicolemorgan, Morgan, what's going on? I came back on now to see if you posted anything? I'm praying that Loki is fine now. I want to see good news here when I come back on in the a.m.

No news yet, we are waiting to see the vet. It is pretty busy here at the emergency vet this evening. The nurse took his temperature and vitals and he is not a critical case so we have to wait in line to see the doctor. He is sleeping on me right now but still coughing periodically. Thank you for thinking of us! We will update as soon as we get any news!

I have attached the discharge papers below. They also gave antibiotics, I attached a photo of that as well.

Basically there was no obstruction seen in the X-rays. Suspected URI or laryngeal irritation.

The poor guys cough sounds so awful, it's heartbreaking. And I did notice that he's been opening his mouth a few time like he's breathing out of it.

Can these come on so suddenly? He was fine all yesterday, no signs. Then at like 5pm today started the coughing and gagging type actions.

He was on LLysine powder daily already.
I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly.
So sad to see him this way :( :(

Here he is, trying to sleep. And his mouth is open. When he wakes up he coughs again :(

Any other URI sufferers think this sounds the same?

I have a video too... But I don't know how to post it.

@Nicolemorgan i'm sorry poor Loki is poorly. Sounds like the vet you saw was very thorough. Hopefully he improves quickly. It could be he got something stuck at the back of his throat initially, but great he's on antibiotics to cover a potential infection. Rosie sends him head rubs and nuzzles and hopes he feels better soon.

@Nicolemorgan I couldn't stop thinking about Loki and had to come down to my computer now. He was given Clavamox, which I always talk about for an URI and the sphynx breed.

Are you planning on contacting your regular vet today or even bringing him in to see them? Did they x-ray only his belly area or his throat too? I have a feeling that they didn't look in his throat by holding onto his tongue with some sort of towel (paper or terry). Did they do that?

The only time any of my babies had their mouths open to breathe was when they had two nostrils completely stuffed up from an URI. I have had coughing and gagging here from a back drip.

I'm not liking the enlarged heart finding. No fluid was noted?

If Loki doesn't have any congestion from mucous blocking his airways, it's not sounding like an URI with mouth breathing.

When the vet listened to his chest with a stethoscope, did they hear any congestion at all?

I'm sending you all big hugs and praying that Loki feels better very soon. Poor baby. HUGS

Oh, I am sorry that Loki isn't feeling well. They can just randomly get sick with no warning. Hopeful that it's a URI, and that the antibiotic start working quick. Did she have a fever? Did she eat/drink last night or today? Don't hesitate to take her back to the vet if you're concerned ... sometimes giving them fluids can help a great deal.

How is she doing this morning? Keep us posted.

Sending hugs.

Positive thoughts go Loki's way. I do find it odd that it came on so fast. I agree that I would see my regular vet as well, and get more info about the heart part. Please keep us updated.

His case was "seasonal allergies" she is seeing a lot of here -
Will PM you n Loki -

Here is my original post when Toby was "coughing actual reverse sneeze per my vet "
Hot to touch, lethargic , etc
Lair Prayers for Yoda mom's Toby

His was DX with seasonal allergies and treated with Chlortab for two weeks
( ended up here all four had the same symptoms few days here -
I kept calm listened to my vet amd all better within the week)
Always scary when our babies don't feel good

Healing vibes to Loki
I would show your vet your video to rule out seasonal allergies?
I specifically asked my vet to listen to his heart and also rule out URI -
She diagnosed seasonal allergies, slight murmur and no URI-

Thank you all for your kind words. We bright Loki home last night and he was coughing/gagging even more. We made an appointment with our regular vet to take a look and show do her the videos.

She didn't think a URI and thought more of an obstruction. So long story short, Loki is at the vet now. We gave him lots of hugs and kisses and told him mommas would see him soon.

Also no ketamine and the heating pad.
He will be held in house until his surgery this afternoon (roughly).

We can call for updates.
So they are going to do any oral exam, and lead into endoscopy to find anything if the oral exam shows nothing.

This vet was very nice, and saw the videos. And she thinks it seems like something obstructed as well.

So please send positive thoughts and prayers for Loki during his surgery today. We are a bit of a wreck as it our first survey without sphynxes, so it's scary.
But we are thinking good thoughts and will update you guys as we know more.

@Nicolemorgan I'm praying as you know. The ISO is the safest anesthesia for Loki and he will do fine. I totally understand how you feel and it's ok to be extremely upset. Tomorrow everything will have calmed down and back to normal with much needed sleep.

Hugs
