Ohhhh, I feel so awful. . re you are excited about your new baby being bor. on Saturday and you can't even get l excited yet because of Vito's issue on his neck and the meds he is on. :(

Just thinking...I guess you didn't change kitty litter brands either, right?

Did you first try topical ointments/creams? What about Benadryl?

Tried diff litters too. Stopped supplements for a bit too. No ointments.

My new baby will again be a sibling to CourtneyKaz new baby. There were 3 fat babies 2 girls one boy all poibted but waiting for colors as they were thermals

Meg does he get scabby or bumpy in his dorsal sections? Like from his armpits along side and down knees?
You know. Even if you have to quarantine a kit for a while the benefit to Vito of companionship might outweigh the risk

No just chafing from his poor clawless feet digging at his neck . Do you think there is any chance it is his ears? They have been checked but his right ear is impossible to clean and the cpscratching is always worse on the right side. No yeast or infection..

It seems strange, it's just his neck. Could be his ears?
My sister has a cat that has allergies bad and she has steroid shots
ever so often. That's the only way she has any quality of life.
She suffers terrible. But, I understand what you say about Vito taking
the steroid. One month, is a long time to be in confinement.
Sad things are so complicated for you and Vito right now.
Maybe doing blood work sooner, so, if it does show anything he
Will get relief sooner? All I know is to pray.

I am starting to think ears too and that the meds are just maksing the symptoms. THey have done cytology on his ear goo and nothing showed up. It is not that I dont trust my vets, there are 4 or 5 at my clinic and I like them all. Perhaps he just has something more unusual going on. I may try another clinic just to see what they say, but it will have to wait till the end of the month.

Back when he had yeast in his ears we treated it with drops and his right ear was a little easier to clean for a few weeks, but now he wont let you do more than a wipe around the outer ear with a cotton ball.

It's possible that you are weaning him off the Pred. too quickly. I myself have had this problem where stepping down the dose too quickly caused a rebound effect. The condition flared up with a vengeance. My Dr recognized this immediately and restarted the Pred. bringing me down about half as fast as before. That worked.

We went from one tablet every other day to half a tablet every other day for over a month and now half every three days.

Hmmm, that does make it sound ear related. I know that some don't care to have their ears cleaned, but if he's not letting you clean them at all then it sounds like there's something painful or irritating going on which could be causing him to do all the scratching.

I hope with all this discussion something can be figured out 'cause I'd love for you to be able to get another companion for Vito!

Hmmm...I just don't know. It does sound localized with his neck and ears. But I have seen dogs with allergies that only affect their ears. I feel your pain KIA is having auto immune issues also. She likes me to rub her while fave and ears with my hand really hard.

Great thoughts. Negative for RW, clothes are rarely worn. Vet believes allergy based on symptoms. We did rabbit as his food trial. Both raw and canned. Have not tried derm yet but will def be revisiting. Id be happier if we could find a different solution.

deff go to a dermatologist they can allergy test him and figure out what he is allergic to and if need be make up injections to be given to help with his allergies. he could be allergic to the rabbit. i know hills makes a duck food and z/d - which has the protein molecules so small that the body doesn't recognize it. i wish you the best of luck, i had a dog allergic to everything grass, trees, mites, pollens, almost all foods except duck and potato. he should have lived in a bubble!

We went from one tablet every other day to half a tablet every other day for over a month and now half every three days.

that is a really low dose of pred if its the 5mg. when animals get allergies it normally affects their ears, face and feet. a lot of times it can be just 1 ear- doesnt have to be both ears. they dont normally do the sneezing, itchy eyes like we do. and they normally get a food allergy cause they have been on the same food all of their lives. thats why foods with duck, salmon, rabbit, kangaroo, eggs are good foods to switch to cause they havent had it in their diet. most foods have chicken, beef, lamb in it.

I'm reading about his ear now.
Since he doesn't wear a collar (most of the time) and you haven't changed soaps, detergents, shampoo, etc., it could very well be his ears since I think it's a bit odd that he only has this skin problem in one area.
It made me think that I have something very odd when I get a cold and something is going on in my lungs and my ears and throat. I will have an insane itch on my back (where my lungs are), inside my ears and part of my throat and right smack under my chin. I can scratch and scratch and just can't help it.
If something is going on inside his ears, it could be affecting his neck area and maybe that's why he's so miserable. Have the vets checked on his glands? Next time he's at the vet's office, have them check on his glands. They can look in his throat too. Do they competely clean his ears when you bring him in? Have they checked for ear mites?
I'm not so convinced he needs to be on pred. This whole thing is causing so much grief and now with the thought of a new kitten entering your home added on top of it all.

I'm just trying to think of all sorts of things. I don't mean to drive you insane. I just know that you've been through enough and you deserve some peace and happiness. :)

Glands seem fine last time they were checked, no mites. He had his ears cleaned under anesthetic going on 2 years and they caused horners syndrome.

My vet always suggest horse when she has to sort out a food allergy because it's hypoallergenic. But you have to stick with it for 6 weeks before you can see results than you can try orher meats. And when he shows symptoms again you know wich meat it is. We call it exclusion diet. ( I don't know how it's called properly sry for my english) maybe it's stress related? Vendetta (my moms cat) always gets red around her neck and a little bit on her belly when she's stressed out. But it's gone one or two days later. I'm so sry for you and Vito and I hope everything clears up soon :(

I would explore more on the ear hunch you have because I think it is probably right.
When I used to be a dog groomer, I groomed a toy poodle that absolutely destroyed her neck from scratching because of constant deep inner ear infections. She was scratching closest to where the discomfort was felt instead of the opening of the ear itself. She came in on a strict schedule just to have her nails ground down and ears plucked so they were free of hair. I felt so bad for the poor thing.

I have nothing to add really other than that the ear hunch sounds like it's worth having checked out.
Mr Vito's in my thoughts and I really hope you can get to the bottom of this so you can start getting excited about the new kitten!
