UPDATE: U of I appt. on Friday at noon (it's a 5 hr. round trip drive, so prob. won't post updates until Saturday). I had added L-Lysine to her diet and I really think it's helping. The new sores seem to be healing much quicker than before. Not sure if it has anything to do w/ the addition of the L-Lysine or not. Asked breeder for vet info and she responded back yesterday saying she was very ill and that she would get back to me. I responded back and said I just needed a name. Anyway, I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. I know I said it before, but I must say it again--just how very grateful I am for each and every one of you. It's amazing how being part of a community such as this helps us deal with the ups and down of life with these beautiful creatures ! Of course there are MANY more "ups" than downs, but it's so emotionally difficult when our babies are ill. Thank you all!! :kiss:

I think you are doing the best taking her to the University.
You can also ask them to draw blood to check for allergies. Anything
She could possibly be allergic to.
Will be looking for a update. Safe travels.

Hi Everyone. Well, I have no news :depressed:. Woke up Friday morning with a 102 degree fever and had to cancel my appt. @ u of I (been battling bronchitis now for a few weeks). No way I was able to drive 5 hours by myself and it was too late to get hubby to come with. So, I am rescheduled for this Friday. In the meantime, my vet wanted to give her a shot of covenia (antibiotic) to see if it helps, but I have read a lot of really scary stuff about covenia. I know sometimes there's lots of hype and false info out there, but I take everything into consideration when it comes to my babies and don't want to take any chances at all! I'm continuing w/ chlorhexadine wipes and shampoo, as well as sulfur ointment. They get better for a day and then more pop up the next. It's never ending. Thankfully, she's acting fine and eating, and all that as she has been. The thing that is the hardest is keeping her and Arlo apart as they really want to be near each other. The more I think about what the vet said about it being demodex seems unlikely as the breeder's cats would have this..however there's that slight chance that they do and she just didn't tell me. Anyway, does anyone have experience w/ the covenia or should I just wait t o see the university vet on Friday to do anything? Thanks!

@ArlosMom
I would recommend against the antibiotic shot because it could mask things that the dermatologist needs to see.
Hope you both feel better soon.

Hello everyone! -Update on Layla; We saw the vet on Friday. They did a scraping and found no signs of demodex but did find coccoid bacteria, which confirmed a bacterial infection. They did say that she could still have demodex as it is often very difficult to find them as they are deep in the skin and that a biopsy may confirm demodex, but I did not want to put her through that. Demodex is not life threatening and it's a normal occurrence in cats and is not contagious to arlo if she does have it. Just knowing she had bacteria on her skin from the sores, I knew the best course of action was antibiotics. They wanted to do a convenia injection but I have read too many bad things about reactions from convenia and being that it stays in the system for 65 days, I didn't want to take any chances. So I pick up her chicken flavored cephalexin oral suspension tomorrow from the compounding pharmacy (fingers crossed that she'll actually keep it in her mouth!) . Doc. said to keep doing the chlorhexadine shampoo and wipes and her skin does look a whole lot better. I'm hoping the antibiotics clear everything up once and for all! I did ask about letting her interact w/ arlo and doc. said as long as he's not biting into her neck in a way that would affect the existing sores, it is fine. They do play bite but it's not bad and I have been wiping her skin down after they play to avoid any bacteria from his mouth further infecting anything. I think we are finally on the right track! Here are a few pictures of the babies!! Arlo is definitely a very protective big brother!! Thank you all for you concern and support!! Love you guys!!

@ArlosMom glad to hear that Layla will be on the road to recovery. Honestly, the Convenia is excellent. I never heard of it being in their system for that many days as I have always been told that it only lasts 10 or 14 days in the system. It is used to treat bacterial infections on the skin. Hopefully the route you are taking instead will do a fine job so your little girl will be comfortable finally.

Best of luck and I hope you are feeling all better too now.

Anyone have any idea on how long it takes before antibiotics start clearing things up? I'm seeing new spots on her and getting worried that it's not working o_O. Am I just being impatient? She started on them on Tuesday night w/ her first dose, so it's only been 3 fulls days.

Think it can take at least a week before it works and it can take a little longer before her skin calms down. At least that was what the docter told my niece today about a skin issue she is having. But she is a humankid and not a naked little princess so don't know if it works the same!
