I just bought my first mole rat. Her name is Worm. She is perfect. This is 3/17, and I bring her home 4/10. Although I’ve had many pets before, I know she is going to be more of an investment with great return. I am nervous about her skin. I have seen some posts saying yes coconut oil, some saying no. I live in the panhandle of FL so very humid. I want to only give baths when absolutely needed to avoid excess grease on her skin. Breeder has told me what food she gives, but no clue as to what wipes. Do yall wipe your kitties? If so, with what?

Hello and welcome, and congratulations! would love to eventually see some pics of your new family member. Regarding bathing, I think it can vary as just like us, some just seem to get dirtier than others . I used to use coconut oil at first with my two and also bathe once a week. But after reading peoples experiences on this wonderful site I stopped the coconut oil. They did seem to "brown up " very quickly after bathing and applying the oil and it wasn't so bad when we stoped using it, but that was. my experience. I now only bathe my girl ( we sadly lost our boy in 2023 to HCM) around once every three weeks or so, using Aveeno oatmeal soothing bath for sensitive skin and a tiny bit of olive oil on cotton wool pads dampened with warn water around her butt if there are "stubborn" patches. In between, if necessary I may wipe her with a warm dampened face towel. We are in the UK and I am sure other members will add their tips on wipes that are available in the US.

thank you so much for replying! condolences for your baby who waits at the rainbow bridge for you. I was wondering if “people shampoo” was okay so this is great info!

Hello and welcome! She is beautiful.

I bathe only when they look dirty or when I can see the grease marks on my clothes. (you'll know what I mean lol) I haven't ever used wipes on my current sphynx but my first one I would occasionally wipe down with sensitive baby wipes when needed in the beginning. She had allergies so needed medicated baths more often.

@emln , welcome to the lair family! hello Fellow Floridian! Worm is darling! so glad you joined us , will be counting down 4/10 gotcha day! your heart must be going pitter patter! I will remember as it's my birthday lol.. You have joined an amazing bunch here. Never hesitate to ask questions. I joined her with my first nakid over a decade ago and never looked back. so much care, knowledge and support here.

The sphynx info center link and top right search box for specific topics very helpful.

Your breeder can give you tips and advise on bathing , care, as well as members here. I found not overbathing (as can cause skin issues) and keeping a simple biweekly routine of wipe downs, nail trimming/checks, ear wipe outs ( I do not flush cat ears) works well for the 5 nakids in my world over the years.
I have all adoptees, including one from a Fl panhandle breeder , my girl just turned 15 yrs old. You will get a routine that works best for your Worm's skin.
lots of info all at once , it will all come together!
for me, here in FL, NO coconut oil or other oils, as it can actually clog pores.

there is a great thread on shampoos members use.( I personally don't recommend Johnson and Johnsons baby shampoo as it has a different ph. ) I will tag you in the shampoo post.

I keep on hand waterwipes and use trizultra w/keto (dual purpose ear cleaner and skin flush) on swissper cotton squares to do wipe downs *just not on face, and use to wipe out ears on swissper cotton rounds has worked for me. the trizultra really gets any brown off armpits, bumms, chins, necks for my crew . mine are water spa day haters. those with kittens can share tips on kittens getting used to baths and their routines.

so excited for your upcoming Worm Gotcha! Definitely
suggestions : kitty proof your home including plants that can be toxic. dont use plug in air freshners (actually warning on back of those packages), no essential oil diffusers as can be toxic, lethal.
double triple check washers/dryers before turning on even if you walk away for a few seconds.
if you have floor heat registers, collars and tags can get caught on* I had to move my window blind cords too.
watch hot stove tops, and opening ovens! mine tried to jump in and on as they are heat seekers. when I cook or use oven, I have to put them up in my bedroom.
watch opening doors, look down at your feet all the time, they are lightening fast underfoot .
mine go nakid here in FL, only clothes for photo ops as I had a close call for one of mine that got a thumb nail caught on sweater and nearly fell from a high place.lucky I was there to catch my baby. mine prefer lots of those fleece 50"x60" type throws from Marshalls, TJ Max, ross more than any cat bed lol.

I swear they are cat, dog, monkey , baby all in one for life! my heart is happy for you and little adorable Worm!

keep us updated often!!

Welcome to sphynxlair! Congrats on 'expecting'. What an exciting time ahead of you. Worm is stunning and looks so adorable.
I hardly bath my crew. I notice the less I bath them, the less they get dirty. I sometimes use a baby wipes (without alcohol).
