My beautiful (almost) 12 year old girl Kiwi is going to the vets today ( 8.30 am UK time) for some dental work including sadly the removal of two teeth. I have already requested no Ketamine but can't help feeling anxious, she is no spring chicken although otherwise in good health with , as far as we can tell, no heart problems although she will be having some pre med tests before her op today.I am sat with her now giving lots of hugs and telling her how much I love her, but this is being met with cold stares as she is used to having breakfast right now and has to be "starved" from 10pm yesterday (she is very much a foodie) Please send your special Sphynx Lair good vibes her way for a quick smooth procedure and a good recovery .

Thank you for your support and kind thoughts. Kiwi is out of surgery and all went well. We will be collecting her in a couple of hours. I was feeling terrible about her loosing teeth, she's always had a good diet, etc no junk food" however our vet has told us that apparently when they had her under GA and took radiographs etc they are certain it is a condition called Feline Odontogenic Resoption, FORLs disease which is a kind of autoimmune condition where the odontoblasts attack the tooth tissue and cause resorption and pain. Unfortunately it cannot be prevented or treated apart from extraction . I possibly has a genetic tendency too. Not sure if anyone out there is familiar with this ? I asked them to check out her left eye too which had recently become watery and looked reddened under the lids and they think it is probably herpes related and they have also found a small ulcer. They have said while thee isn't actually a cure they are very confident it can be manages with medication the ease any soreness

@nudebea , so happy surgery went well and hopefully she is home resting now with her amazing mum.
My bengal had FORLS reabsorption.
glad you had them check her eye. sorry about the small ulcer. did vet discuss meds? specfic eyedrops to start? my beloved boy years ago had Idoxurine drops from eye specialist and vet - I drop gel drops. worked well. lol I tried the vet I drop gels on myself (lol I called the company after I noticed they sell the vet version and human version in Canada same ingredients just a different label, but human version not avail in US).

hugs and speedy recovery vibes, keep us upated often, all paws are family.
ps.. which teeth extracted? my bengal had his front canine tooth extracted and did great.. I did soft food while he recovered .he was a foodie too!

Happy to report all is still going well. She was surprisingly active when she came home and wolfed down her (soft) food. She is on meloxicam pain killers, just added to her food which she is fine with, chloramphenicol eye drops plus a soothing corneal gel eye solution currently. Unfortunately almost all her teeth apart from four had to be removed. I saw the radiographs and what this condition does to the teeth is alarming. She has eaten her breakfast fine this morning and seems relaxed although her left eye is a little gunky. She is due to go back for a review next Wednesday. Thank you for checking in x

Glad to hear Kiwi is on the mend. The reabsorption of teeth in any cat is highly painful and is roundly believed to be genetic. Feel comforted by the fact that you saved Kiwi from further involvement. My two 15 yr old littermate furries lost many teeth to the dental specialist so many years ago I cant remember what year it had been They eat normally, both wet and dry, pick up things with their mouths, groom themselves and each other and live a full life. Applaud yourself, the decision took courage.

Thank you very much for your words of support. Although early this morning, although a little quiet she seemed otherwise fine, her left eye, where she has a suspected herpes related infection has taken a turn for the worse . She cannot open it and when I gently lift her eyelid her eye is rolled back and you can se only mostly membrane . The area directly under her eye also looks puffy. Until yesterday her eye had been a little runny and reddened but nothing like this . The vet had given her chloremphenical eye drops plus corneal gel, she has so far had two administrations of these since we brought her home last night . I have just called the vet and we are taking her down this afternoon. I haven't given any more doses of her eye medications. Although I suspect her mouth will be a little sore after the extractions there doesn't seem to be any discharge or blood and she did eat earlier. I am worried about her eye though as although there was clearly an infection it did not look nearly as bad as it does today

Once again thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and support. On Saturday we took Kiwi back to the vets as her left eye looked so much worse. The vet felt that this was probably due to the swab they had taken while she was under GA having her teeth removed and to continue with the eye medications which we did. I am happy to report that her eye looks much better this morning . She has finished the short course of chlormaphenical drops and is still having the corneal gel. I think she is still in some discomfort with her mouth and is still taking moloxicom analgesic in the liquid form on her food. However I think she has noticed the gabapentin, which is in tablet for and which I crushed into her food . She refused to eat it. The other alternative is using the pill popper but as her mouth is still sore I don't want to cause her more distress so sticking with the moloxicom at present. She goes back for her post op check tomorrow evening but overall I think its positive news for now,
