Update!
We're just leaving the vet now.
She says that it looks like any secondary infection has cleared (no fever and his lungs are clear). What's kept him so sick is a nasty case of rhinotracheitis (viral). She sent us home with eye and nose antibiotics and gave him another small antibiotic shot to ensure nothing can take hold while he is vulnerable.

It's so wonderful to have a great vet. I feel much better have her input and guidance which will help me remain calm while my pink man recovers.

Thank you all for your well wishes!

Hi Kristi, I know you're busy taking care of Winnie and Henry. Just was wondering how Sir Winnie cute face was doing today???
*hugs*

Thanks for asking you two!

He's progressing slowly as expected, but there is progress!
His meower is working a little better, he had more energy yesterday (played a bit with Henry and red dot), and he's be up and around the house more in general which is very welcome and good to see.

I tell ya though, the whole herpes virus in cats is no joke! I almost wish this was bacterial in nature so he didn't have to keep suffering and soldiering through. With that said, however, I'm glad his secondary bacterial infection is gone and feel lucky that he doesn't have one of a myriad of things that could/would be a lot worse.

I just read this. How scary!! A broken meower!! I'm so glad he is healing well and that he's getting lots of love and rest. When do you leave for your trip Kristi? Will he be better by then? Huge hugs to the pink guy. Graddy says he could borrow his meower for a while if need be

Kristi,
I cant recall does Winnie have herpes and was this all caused by a flare up or is it something else?

I am glad he is feeling better today. When do you leave for your trip?

He wasn't previously diagnosed but it appears now that yes, Winston has herpes. So all of this started as a flare up (rhinotracheitis), which then led to a secondary infection (sinuses and a kind of kitty bronchitis). Unsure if he got herpes from Henry, or if he's just been fortunate to have not had a flare previously. Maybe the Lysine x2 a day he gets has been helping. I remembered Sparti's mom talking about how sick he was with herpes when he was a baby, but otherwise didn't really know what an outbreak would look like. It really is quite shocking how sick it makes them! When I thought of it in terms of human viruses though (like influenza or HIV) it makes sense that a virus can be all kinds of nasty.

Oh - and I leave for my trip next Wednesday. Hoping he's better by then...
