Price of spay in your area?

I just found out that one of our local vets charges $235 to spay a cat, $70 of this is for bloodwork. This seems really high to me. Our local SPCA has a spay/neuter clinic that will do the same spay for $45. Who is paying $235????

I was wondering what surgeries in your areas cost?

My vet charges alot but I rather pay it then use the clinics anytime.
Most use Ketamine and the cheaper stuff.
Most also do not do blood tests or i.v.s.
I paid $385 to have Wrinkles altered at my vet last year.
I rather be safe then sorry.
It would have been $285 but I paid $100 extra for the lapo.

Wow, that's a lot! What is lapo? Our clinic has alternatives for ketamine, I forgot what they told me but said it would be no problem to use something different.

When I wanted my Golden puppy to be spayed, she was only 20 pounds at the time. My private vet wanted $500, including blood work.

Instead, the receptionist at the vet's office "secretly" told me about a Spay/Neuter Clinic 20 minutes away, that she highly recommended. I had my girl spayed for $150 including blood work, microchipping, and pain medications. The clinic was wonderful. Very clean, organized, knowledgeable, and my girl was safe and happy. Plus, I saved $350, and she was microchipped!

It was cheap but he is really good- I can't even see a scar on her belly (she is white there though). When I went to pay I was expecting about $175 and then got a pleasant shock

You can still see Cleos scar and it has been over 2 years.
She was done at a cat only vet in North Carolina.
My vet was $130 with basic blood work but I paid for the full panel and then the extra for the lapro.

If I remember correctly it cost about 85 for a spay and 60 for a neuter....but it depends on the vet. Some charge about $200 here also. But you can go to one of the clinics and get it done laprascopically (lapo) for about $10 if you are low income.

Our local Spay/Neuter clinic "STOP" only charges $45 for males and $58 for females. I used them once and WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN. The only reason I used them in the first place is because my male came into season before I had the money to get him fixed so I was in a crunch and couldn't afford my normal vet,,he came home so sick, had piss and poo all over him, was DRUNK, couldn't walk or stand, I thought he was going to die!! I should have known better when she told me I could pick him back up in 4 hours. I guess they are ok for an emergency fix when your low on cash but I don't recommend them.

My vet charges $179.00 for a spay and this includes the pre blood work. I believe his Nueter is $145 but thats just guessing as it has been a while since I took a boy to him.
My breeders vet charges $145.00 for a spay (Which is a 1.5 hrs north) but I don't know if that includes the pre blood work or not. It's not on my receipt but he is like bestfriends or something with my breeder so I wouldn't be surprised if he did it as a comp service for her. I would hope he would have done the pre bloodwork, if not,,I'm so glad Snuffie lived through it!!!

Yes we have a low income deal around here for 15, but it is very hard to get into, and I am in the wrong county for it.

I just can't help but wonder about the 200 and up price for spays, do these vets really care about preventing future litters and helping pets and their owners or is it all about money at this point? If I ever do make it all the way through vet school, I hope I never get to the point where $$$ is more important than helping pets. I want to be the "James Herriot" style Dr, ya know?

It really bothers me that vet care has become so expensive and a lot of people simply can't afford the care their pets need. We have a mobile vet clinic here, it has been in business for 25 years, they travel from town to town and do vacc, $10 for DHLPPC (dogs) and $7 for Rabies. They also sell HW and flea meds. The area vets are trying to shut them down! It seems kinda greedy to me.

Wow, Lapo for $10 is almost worth a drive from Ohio to your area once gas prices go down!! lol None of the vets in my area do Lapo yet.

A spay is $107 I think, that covers the surgery, pain meds after surgery and an antibiotic shot which supposedly covers them for 10days, rather than me giving antibiotics orally, just incase..

It cost me $40.00 to get Isis done about 6 months ago. We didn't get pain meds or anything, but I'm very happy with the vet. We have used them for 10 years and there prices are very good. We have never had a problem with them and even when you are a wlak in you get in pretty quickly.

I live on a boarded town. It is much cheaper to go to the U.S. to visit the Vet then in Canada. Its about half the price. My Siamese just got spayed 4 months ago, it cost $140 and that was pre blood work and an overnight stay. Kiwi's neuter was about $60.00 I like my vet. They are good caring people

Its one of the easiest surgeries to perform. I called another vet that I use on Sunday's they quoted me 145 and it included IV, pre bloodwork and pain meds. I was so upset. I really want to use my normal vet but may have to use my back up.

I <3 my vet, he doesn't nickle and dime people to death and I feel his prices are reasonable. For Priscilla's spay, a lap, my vet bill was as follows:

Spay without Ketamine $45
Pre-op lab work up $40
IV Cath $45
Pain Killer Injection $20
Microchip $50

For a total of $200, which I felt was a reasonable price compared to what other vets in the area charge. I could have gotten it done cheaper if I omitted the pre-op blood work, IV cath, pain killers and just paid $45 and then the $50 for the microchip, but I like to err on the side of caution.

Unfortunately, I live in a very high cost of living area in New York and this vet is one of the more reasonable in my area if you can believe it. It would have cost only $375 (ha ha) but I elected for pre-blood work up, IV during surgery and propafol rather than ketamine, all of which were extras.

Wow is right! You could have almost bought another Sphynx for that much money. Now that goes to show another reason as to why it is nice for breeders to spay/neuter the kitten before he/she comes home to you!

This is part of the reason why I go for boys rather than girls!!
Smeagols castrate was £40 (about $60US) and his microchip £20 ($30US)
I always have blood tests running on older cats or longer surgeries, think that was £40 last time I had one done!

Now all I have to do is find the cash for his heart scan!! Thats gonna be around £300 ($450US)
