Raw with Vegetables?!?

I'm currently weighing the pros and cons of using my trusted butcher's meat plus BITR vs Pre-made raw.

I live in Vancouver where there are a few choices of locally made raw foods. However, one does not guarantee hormone free meats (that's a sticking point for me... if I won't eat it, I won't feed it to my naked).

Another includes vegetables in the ingredient list: "Ingredients: 90% meat, with heart and liver, ground, 5% raw ground veggies, free range eggs, yogurt, 5% supplements, kelp, salmon oil, bee pollen."

I think any addition of vegetables would not be good, but even at 5%... it's raising a bit of a red flag.

Comments, thoughts, opinions?

Thanks.

Well in a natural diet the cats would consume a little veggies... the contents of their preys stomachs. So to me it is not that much of a red flag.. personally I would prefer to skip it though as I don't think it provides enough benefit to them when weighed with potential problems like sensitive tummies.

I am not sure of yogurt used in raw cat food though. I don't like the sound of this as some cats can be sensitive to dairy, and you don't know what ingredients are in the yogurt. I have heard of this being used in raw dog food but its a no no for me in raw cats food.

Is this food for both dogs and cats maybe? it sounds that way to me from the ingredients. It would probably be fine but if you are looking for the best quality, then I would go with your trusted butchers meat and BiTR. It usually works out cheaper than pre-made which is a plus, but I guess that depends on the cost of the meat from your butcher.

Thanks, @zoinks . This is what they prepare for cats; they do have another line of food for dogs. But the vegetables and now that you mention it, yogurt, cause me to quirk my brows. Although I smiled when you mentioned the vegetables inside the tummy of prey ;)

One of my fellow carnivore friends always says that we're vegetarian because pigs and cows eat vegetables... and we eat them... so we're vegetarian :p

My butcher is very cool and keen to help. Not the cheapest in town, but truly quality meat without hormones etc. So yeah, I think I'll just try a bit of chicken, turkey and beef... see what Max likes best and then ordering in big batches.

That's a first for me seeing yogurt in the ingredient list. Interesting, I guess they are trying for the probiotics? Sounds like BiTR will be the way to go for you. My boyfriend always teases me I spend more time in the kitchen preparing food for the cats then I do for him ;-)

LOL, @Calicocious .

I'm hoping Max will help me cook!

Actually, I love cooking, so it's not a stretch for me to make Max's food from scratch (short of raising and butchering the animals) myself. I probably spend 1-2 hours a night just prepping/cooking our human food. One weekend morning is reserved from doing up a huge batch of soup, stew, chili, pasta sauce etc. for freezing and using on nights when too busy.

I kind of hope Max will help me cook ;-) I'll be sneaking him a bit of bison, turkey etc. from my own food prep.
