Seeking Advice; Preparing for a Rescue

Hi everyone!

I have been lucky enough to be able to adopt a sphinx into my life. They will be fostered for about a month, and then come to me in January. Given all the restrictions with COVID, I was very fortunate to be able to meet him, and he is the sweetest cuddle bug. I will do a more thorough introduction of him once I have him and we are settled a bit.

I am interested in people's advice regarding adopting an adult sphinx, particularly ones that may not have come from ideal situations. I know that it is impossible to predict any behaviors, but that isn't stopping me from asking.

I am bringing the kitty into a home with a puppy, so I am also open to advice on introducing and creating a safe relationship between the two of them.

Taking it very slowly is key. Keeping them confined for a few days in a room where they can get used to their new world helps. Going in the room and visiting frequently will help them bond with you. They will also get to smell the dog on you etc. Then after a few days, I would room swap and put the dog in the room and take the cat out to see the rest of the house. The first few times I would carry them through the house so they see everything, but feel safe swaddled in a blanket in your arms. Be sure to have a couple of cat trees to give them vertical space from the dog. I am sure others will have plenty of great tips to share. @Kelpie

I think the biggest thing is being patient. I don’t know what your new kitty has been through, but you may have to build trust (though if he’s already cuddly yes probably halfway there already). Just be patient and kind.
