My beloved 10-year-old boy just died (2 days ago) of this horrible disease. I had no idea he was even sick. His sweet little sister (not a littermate and from two separate breeders) is devastated and I would really like to know more about this test so I can get her sample in and do everything possible to ensure this never happens again. I am crushed. He was my world.

@NakedTruth I would recommend an echo cardiogram with a cardiologist. This test really isn't an indicator if a cat with the gene will ever develop HCM, where an echo of the heart will diagnose heart disease immediately. It's recommended to start at one year of age. I take mine every other year and do a ProBNP test every other year (blood test that can detect heart problems). There's cats that are 12 years old that have both genes and have never developed HCM, so an echo really is the only way to be sure. So sorry for your loss <3

Thank you!! I wish I had done that with Floyd. I feel horrible now, knowing there was something I could’ve done that might have extended his life. There are no cardiologists in my town so it will involve travelling, but that is well worth it!!

@NakedTruth , please please don't be hard on yourself. my girl had clots too and such severe heart problems
and even with interventions her little heart just could not take the embolisms..
Floyd knows he is loved eternally and you are the best mum ever.

sharing , the HCM clinics are a distance here too. my vet mentioned they can estimate for the travelling cardiologist that comes to her office.

hugs n hed smooches

Thank you so much, I so needed to hear this. I keep beating myself up for not finding this out sooner, even though I did everything I could have and he really did have such a happy life. I’m just having such a hard time accepting it because I really didn’t see it coming. At the end his heart was filled with fluid and was pumping fluid into his lungs. He really was my world and I feel so lost without him. ❤️

@Yoda mom That's the way I do it, we have no clinics in the area so a travelling cardiologist comes to my regular vet office. I'm usually able to get a discount for bringing 6 cats or more as well which is great.

Wait, I thought you had 3 cats?
