@Natalie Murphy , thank you for the virtual hug, right back at you. checking in on lil warrior Shamus? updates? confirming if he comes home tomorrow? all paws crossed for adorable Team Shamus! {=
No we have no date set for him coming home I am so gutted I did visit him yesterday and the poor chap is so ready to come home. He was all purrs at seeing me. Which I must say lifted my spirits but I did notice the drain was still in the throat So I spoke to the vet He said they stopped the flushing for a day because he threw up his food on Thursday morning. They wanted to do two more flushed. The mucus is less but there is still mucus forming in the sinus.
So in my adult mind it means after all of this we may not be at the root of the problem yet I could be wrong as less mucus is forming and his ear cavities are not building up Which will be a major plus having nice clean ears. I was hoping he would be home for his birthday But it will turn out to be a welcome home party instead. At least when he comes out I have two weeks off work to spend with him and my mom is arriving on Mothers Day So he will be spoiled by grandma too. When he eventually homes home. Today I’d Day 7 with no baby

@Natalie Murphy , Oh my heart goes out to you and sweet Shamus. I am so glad you got to visit and know it must be hard on the heart not having a set date.

is there a point of where the treatment is stopped? 7 days there is a long time imho . Him throwing up his breakfast :( ..
your his mum and bottom line, they work for you.

how much longer can they keep flushing, and it's under anesthesia? have you considered bring him home and getting a second opinion?
I know in the past I have waved the flag and said, enough, stop. You know your baby best. Go with your gut.

when is his birthday? so glad you will have your mum there for Mothers day. I just want to give you the biggest hug and a super big head smooch to Shamus. following closely for updates.

Part 4
7Days later
Mr Shamus is still in the clinic He looks a lot better. They are still flushing his nasal cavity There is still mucus but not as much as before. I think the vets underestimate our statements when we tell them how much these little buggers can sneeze. They never did a flush yesterday It was the first day he had no flush in a week as he threw up. He looks ready to come home. This procedure has been long. I shall ask my vet if it was done earlier what he thinks the results would have of been.
Sorry I have no fantastic news and a quick fix to a snotty problem

Shamus is still in hospital and I am going in to have words with the vet as this has been way to long Today marks the 12th day I just can’t any more I know I should trust the vet but he has lost over half a kg (500g) And they still might be doing another operation. He still has his stitchers in
There is still snot I have to wipe off his nose when I visit but they say he is not sneezing. He has been moved out the cages and has a whole room to himself
The good news is the latest tests have shown there is no bacteria in the mucus
I am trying to get my vet to allow him to be an out patient but he is not having it

All my 5 years of life I have been a snotty sneezer. Walls get repainted every 3 months after I artfully decorate them with 3D frescos Moms even gone to work with new designer clothing on several occasions with what we’re master pieces. No human can out do my boogers.

In August last year I had my nasal cavities flushed. The samples were sent to a very high Government place for disease and infection control. Living in China any infections in animals are required by law to be reported and investigated. After 5 days of growing and testing my boogers they discovered it was a fungus based infection. They recommended a CT scan to find the area of the infection.

I went Wednesday night and today they are going to be doing surgery. ( Today is Friday) The CT scan revealed a lot of puss in my frontal area above my eyes Those and the inner ear canals. They refuse to operate on the ears ( which is a thank full thing and my vet hopes antibiotics will do the trick once we clean out the root cause)

Hold thumbs I do not have a big ugly scar on my forehead. The vet is getting the top university lecturer to come and perform this operation. As my symptoms don’t appear to be unique and it is on the rise.
I just thought I would document this journey to help others see what options are out there or what not to do. We watched a movie on the process.

I hope too have more news tomorrow and a happy kitty

As the mom I personally have no problem with the snotty one. My vet on the other hand is worried about the infection spreading or causing damage that will start effecting the tissue into the skull area and eventually shortening his life.
How did it go?

he is your baby and ultimately it is up to you how you want to proceed.
it would not be the first time I was persistent with my Last vet and said I was bringing my baby home. continued positive vibes for Mr. Shamus.

Update
Sorry my mom flew in to China and hijacker’s my phone She is 80 years old

Shamus came home after me threatening to kidnap him He was in hospital for 12days Had 9 anesthesia procedures lost a bit of weight
But as soon as he came home he was his usual happy go lucky chaotic little self. And he is hungry.
It is such a pleasure to have a cat with no sneezes no dirty face and his ears are so pink inside

The original operation was to open up the sinus area to flush and get rid of the puss buildup As the bone was thickening inside and outside the sinus cavity. They had to drill into the cavity One hole was to scrape the inner layer of skin that was infected Another hole a little higher was to put in a drain pipe. So he looked like an advanced alien with an antenna This was to flush fluids through the sinus area out of the nasal caviyies

They were going to perform a flush everyday That was the plan Pure and simple . But Shamus was not cooperating So they had to sedate him Anaesthesia was used They flushed everyday The amount of mucus started reducing after each procedure. They ran test and the mucus was bacteria free.

By the 7th procedure I could notice Shamus was not so happy He had been there for over a week I was originally told he would need five days to recover from the first op. Now it was dragging on as he was still producing snot. Every time I asked can he come home they always said he needs another 2 flushes. This is also new territory for them As there is no bacteria causing this mucus. So I think they too we’re worried where is it coming from.
Another two were done over 4 days.
I eventually got him home. I was so worried about everything he had been through but even though he had so much anaesthesia His only side effect is a runny tummy so far (touch wood)

We have no snot and oh my hat my boy is like a little kitten he plays non stop. He has never been so active with his toys It is the first time he walks around carriing his toys in his mouth. He plays longer periods of time. He is much better mentally around the house. I think he must of had a constant headache all the time with the pressure behind his eyes As in the CT scan you could see how the thickening bone had already effected the size of his right eyes

So from an old soul sphynx I now have an energetic little kitten of 5 years Who plays with his toys like never before

My biggest worry now is the liquid stools I have been giving him pumpkin Which he loves And my vet recommended some medication for babies with upset tummies Which I shall buy today. I am not to keen on more medication in his system As this poor cat has had more drugs than most if us during the 90’s rave era

Was the operation worth it? Personally yes even if it does not have a positive review here I put quality of life over anything else when it comes to my cat And if I left it the thickening in his skull would of had added to an eye being removed in old age and the prospect of the bone extending into the frontal lobe of the brain in under another 10 years time. Even though I could have bought 8 new sphynx kittens. It cost a lot (4 times the average monthly wage here.) He may still need a flush or two in the future but that is not determined yet. Now we wait and see the long term effect of so much anaesthesia and the success rate

So far successful results He is chipper And the trauma has not had any effect on him. He definitely has a new lease on life So much more active and he plays so long Before he would get really tired and sleep a lot. We have had no nasal discharge. The tummy is coming right. My vet recommended Montmorillonite Powder for the diarrhoea It is for babies and I can see a slow improvement every time he has a bowel movement. As expected this was a side effect he had total watery stools now we have thick yoghurt consistency. Otherwise all has been fantastic Thank you everyone for your support You have all been amazing. I am hoping this can help others get their vets to look into flushing out the nasal cavities to help their babies too

Thank you everyone for your support This operation has been a major success. No more snotty blasts no more mucus around the nasal cavities. His ears are so clean after they drained them. I no longer have to even clean his eyes and wash his face everyday.
He has never played so much. He is carrying his toys around in his mouth, something he has never ever done from his kitten days. He walks longer on his leash.
The doctors did such a good job with the cutting and stitches he has no scarring
They have suggested one more flush before the bone heals in his skull as they drilled a little hole into the sinus cavity. A date has not been set yet.
Thank you again for all your support

What a relief for you and Shamus. High pollen count here and as I run through tissues I think of Shamus feeling better. Scary period but glad you and he are ready to tell us things went so well. Imagine trying to carry a toy in the past with a full up stuffy nose…. Much to be playful about now. What a brave mama!!
