Quick update: I am now single. Berlin has me all to herself (she seems to enjoy this most at 5 in the morning though). I think things have worked out for the best - and it's good not to be worrying that a kitten behaving like a kitten is going to upset anyone.

I'm glad you've made a decision your happy with, there are many cat loving men out there that will be happy to be with you and your kitty

I do not trust people who don't like animals, esp. kittens, and your ex sounds very needy and high maintenance, BUT I also realize it's hard to end a relationship and I hope you are doing okay. Eat some ice cream, cuddle your kitty and go out for margaritas with a GF, while your heart heals.

Congrats to you and Berlin! I am glad that you "rehomed" your BF. There are many other men out there that will either love or at least tolerate your baby!

Well, some people just aren't into cats and what can you do?
It doesn't automatically mean they are bad people. I don't and none of us know your guy so to tell you to either dump him or something else that drastic is just not possible for any of us to do and if so you shouldn't listen to it.
Maybe someone can give you a tip on how to make the situation better though.

I've had girlfriends that has been way too into stuff that I wasn't and that fact alone does not make me a bad person or is there some kind of rule that says that us guys have to convert into whatever our gfs interest is?
It is a problem when something like this happens though, if I meet someone I always make sure she's not an allergic before it goes too far etc but what do you do if you meet THE one and she would be too allergic to ever live in a house with cats?
Tough question, and if it comes to some sort of ultimatum for you, basically the same one. Normally it won't come to that depending on how much he dislikes cats (and love you) but I am sure that you would understand if you turn it around. If he had a noisy, jumpy untrained dog that didn't leave you alone maybe you would rather not spend as much time at his place either.

I don't know him or the situation and I certainly can't tell you either to dump him or what to do IF an ultimatum were to be put on the table. Even if you love him to death I am sure there are scenarios that would make you do the same as he is doing if he was too into something that you are not and that interest made you uncomfortable at his place.

Tough problem and one that comes up for discussion a lot on these forums and is normally very unbalanced in it's replies since we all share the same obsession and have a hard time understanding that all ppl don't.

My 2 cents.
Think through whatever you do very well. Cats are amazing and I wouldn't let them go for anything but so is a life with the right person. It would be a bad thing by him to put an ultimatum on the table but as I said, we don't know the level of discomfort he feels. Only you two do. I don't envy your situation and I don't believe he will acually do that. Also, the kitten will calm down. On top of that it IS possible to train them. Mine stop whatever they are doing if I say NO! no matter what it is. I train them to undertsand that command from the first day I get them. Maybe you can get them to leave him alone more. It's harder with a cat but with dogs we expect it, right?
All ppl don't like being jumped no matter how cute the jumper is.

Really good advice

Congrats to you and Berlin!! I'd rather be happy and alone with my cats then on edge with someone in my life. I think you did the right thing. Gadzuks had it right,,ice cream, kitty cuddles and margaritas with the GF's are in order!! lol

Thanks for the support everyone. I really appreciate it. I'm only nine days into this now, so it still gets tough at times, but I know I made the best decision for me (and what's best for me is best for Berlin, right?). Last night she and I had such a great cuddle in my bed - something which my ex would never have tolerated. She even had a little kneading session on my lap, which she's never done before. It's like she was telling me to relax and that everything would be okay. Special little thing.

I am sure it must be really difficult for you, ending a long-lasting relationship is never easy and there are many doubts and fears. I cross my fingers that you pass through this rough time as fast as possible. Spoil yourself and Berlin a bit, I think a beauty session is in order.
The spring will come soon and you will be able to use Berlin as a bait to hunt for nice, handsome cat-loving men

I just caught up on this post. I am sorry to hear about you and your boyfriend, as I know how hard it can be. It sounds like you know you made the right decision despite the difficulty. I am so glad Berlin is helping you through this, they are so wonderful!

My story: My boyfriend and I of 2 years recently split as he is now 6 hours away. It has been 5 months and there wasn't any sign of one of us moving to the other anytime soon-- just where we are at in our lives. It wasn't the best for us and we both developed unhealthy and somewhat depressed lives apart. It is hard, but right now I know this is best.
Kahlil tolerated Niles. He never complained about him. He would pet, play, and take care of him. He didn't love him like I did, but he knew Niles was important to me and therefore he put aside any problems he had. I thought about getting a second sphynx a while back and asked for his opinion. He said he didn't like the idea of 2 cats, but he would support whatever decision I made. This is the man who let two 90 pound weimeraners sleep in the queen bed with us. If one of us couldn't sleep we'd get up and move to another bed middle of the night. But he accepted it because he knew I loved them and liked to cuddle with them, after cuddling with him.

You've done the right thing and it will get easier the more time passes... its sort of like quitting smoking the only advantage is you've got Berlin to take your mind off things

You can probably find a photo of me and my baby on here if you look hard enough and tough as I might look to some :Surprise: I wouldn't be without him or trade him for anyone no matter what the circumstances!

Just to prove a point, so far my baby has cost me approx $5k in legal fees to prove ownership after my ex stole him and then another $1.8k to bring him to the UK but, I'd spend it all again without even thinking about it as he's just that special

Am I crazy? Maybe but guess what, I've still got my hairless horror and he loves me regardless

Keep on smiling!

Dave

Breaking up now hurts temporarily. Spending most of your life on pins and needles with someone like him hurts a lot longer. Take it from an old lady, you deserve more from life than that. And now you have the chance to find it!

Defintley agree!!! I'd rather be alone anyday then walk on eggshells because of a shakey relationship. Besides, you can have lots of fun being single!!!

Im SO glad you did that :D I went through a medical issue that changed my life and my outlook on friends and men. I clung so hard to this guy during the job loss and disability even though the smart part of me knew he lost interest because i was too scared I would end up alone. 3 years later at age 30 i know solidly that i will not "settle" or "compromise" my needs. If they dont want to give back truth and honesty and REAL love. Id rather sit at home with my dogs (or kitty if i ever get one! )
