This morning I found some veal sweetbreads on sale, I was so excited all the way home because its so hard for me to find organ meats. Got all ready to cut this stuff up and freezer bag it. I opened the package and OMG the stink, stank, stunk! That stuff smells so bad and I bought 5 big packages. I really didnt think I was going to make it thru the cutting. I cannot believe that animals want to eat that, they ate some tho. Oh slimy and stinky, gushy, mushy and some had a little hair stuck to it. Ok, what else stinks that bad so I can avoid it?

Lol! I'm told that if you cut it partially frozen it's easier to cut and it doesn't stink so bad. I don't know if its true. I haven't had much luck with organs other than beef kidney which stinks bad. The smell doesn't go away with just washing my hands either. Last night the dogs got their whole beef hearts for the first time and I got that kidney smell on my hands from handling them, but manageable at least. I ordered some spleen which won't get here until next week so I don't know how bad that stinks yet. Oh and I'm told green tripe is really fowl, like feed strictly outside bad. I haven't got it myself with so I can't speak from experience. Oh the joys of raw feeding ;-)

Yeah, I think I will be skipping on the green tripe! I am traumatized enough for awhile. I thought about partially freezing it but I didnt have enough time to wait around. Next time it is a MUST! LOL
I wanted to ask about the 5% organ: If I feed 77 ounces per week, does that mean I should be feeding 5% of the 77 ounces? I still really dont quite understand the size/weight of bone, organ, liver to give at one time.

Here is that nasty, stinky, squishy sweetbreads:Badly:

Yes, if you feed 77 ounces per week, you should be feeding 5% or 3.85 ounces of liver and 3.85 ounces of some other kind of organs like your stinky sweetbreads. Some people prefer to give a little each day, I personally give the liver and other organ on separate days when I'm feeding a bone in meal. Feeding a large amount in one sitting can make your kitties get runny poos so its probably a good idea to either feed with a bone in meal which helps firm up poos or feed in small amounts throughout the week.

As for the bone, I've never worried about weighing it, I really just go by their poos. If they're getting runny, they need more bone and if they're getting whitish, dry, and crumbly they're getting too much bone and need a few boneless meals to even it out. Sorry I'm not much help with that. The raw feeding group where I answered your email, I'm not sure but I think I've seen a link to the usda's website or one of those organizations where they have the different parts of meats like chicken and the percentage of bone each part has. That should help you if you want to weigh everything out. If you do a search in their archives hopefully something should come up.

Honestly so was I until I actually started weighing how much Hadyn was eating the other day. I was just giving her about what Sealy was getting without thinking about it and she's eating over double what he's eating.

Not that you guys REALLY want to know this, but even real people kidneys/organs start to smell bad after 2 days or so. I have had a kidney that was consented for training/education that I used multiple times and I used it for a lecture, froze it, and then defrosted it and froze it, defrosted it, froze it and defrosted it 2 more times for a lecture over the course of a year. Phew!!!

I taught a college class w/ pig kidneys once and they stunk REALLLLY BAD!

I bought green tripe and it was honestly the nastiest smelling thing I have ever come in contact with. Plus it clogged up my grinder so I had to get up close and personal with it. Just about tossed my cookies.

Well I was really interested in getting that green tripe, nice to hear from someone who has dealt with it and thanks for the warning! Not touching it.

And I would imagine keeping a kidney around that long would stink! Totally gross!
Ah what we do for our 4 legged babies!

Trick I picked up from a conversation with a mortician during a cross-country bus ride:

smear a dab of vicks vapor rub under each nostril before dealing with bad stinky stuff.

--on that occasion, even though the bus was almost full, my and that gal each had a row of seats to ourselves... wonder why?

I use the Vicks deal on a very rare occasion at work, Being a nurse I smell some really foul things so Im not overly sensitive to smells, but for some reason raw meat smells bother me and always have.

Sheep kidneys are pretty stinky too. I was going to say use the vapor rub stuff, but someone beat me to it! You could also wear a surgical mask with some rubbing alcohol on it if that smell doesn't bother you...
