Please send prayers, vibes, etc... Nelson is going to the ophthalmologist for eye surgery right now.   He had his recheck with the vet who immediately called the specialist and asked him to work him in for surgery.

I think I might throw up.

*good luck*

I'll light a candle for him :)

Oh boy, and the roller coaster ride continues!

The doc decided NOT to do the surgery after all, which is both a relief to my nerves and my wallet, but it means another MONTH of 4 kinds of drops in his eye (both eyes now, because the left eye looks like it's starting to have some problems, too). Now we're scrapping the blood serum and trying anti-viral meds and interferon along with antibiotics and atropine... and the eye doc said it's probably going to look worse before it looks better.

:Dizzy:

Oh Brooke! I feel horrible for you and for sweet little Nelson. I wish there were something I could do to help--I'll be praying that he heals up without having to go to the opthamalogist and that you can have a chance to exhale. What kind of surgery were they thinking about doing? The corneal scraping--or something worse? I also felt like throwing up when I read your first post about calling the surgeon--please keep us posted. You both are loved!

Thank you, Susi. You're so sweet! I quickly typed that other post as I was heading to the ophthalmologist...they had prepared me for surgery (make sure he doesn't eat anything, I asked what kind of anesthetic they were going to use, etc.) but when we got there, the doc did another exam and changed his mind! He did do a scraping today (Nelson was not a fan) and two kinds of stains, and now it's just another month of more drops. Anti-virals this time, which we haven't tried before now. Fingers crossed!

If it doesn't work, the surgery will be to use a tool (like a dremel) to brandish the edges of the ulcer, basically creating a wound that the eye will recognize so it will heal itself. This is commonly done with needles, but this particular eye doc uses the brandishing technique and my vet says it heals a lot faster that way (in weeks instead of months). But, I'm still hoping it doesn't come to that.

Nelson is starting to run away from me now whenever he sees me with a bottle in my hands, and he's become depressed. I feel sorry for the poor guy.

Poor Nelson--I don't blame him. And I know how hard it is to administer something that they don't like and don't want you to do....you feel like such a meanie, but you have to do it for their own good. Thank God--when you first said surgery, I was terrified that you meant they would have to remove his eye or something. A woman in Michigan that rescues sphynx has had several that lost both their eyes due to FHV--but it was because theirs went untreated. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Get better, Nelson!

Most likely Nelson's problem is related to FHV, too... it all started about 3 days after I ran out of Lysine treats and was waiting for the new bag to come in. Now I order them 3 bags at a time!!

Just catching up on Nelson's eye troubles. I'm glad they're trying these meds on him. I hope he does not need surgery. Keep your chin up Nelson!

I'm so frustrated and upset! Nelson is squinting his other eye now!! It was fine yesterday. He just sits here with his ears flattened, both eyes squinting, looking miserable and pathetic..he's depressed, won't eat any treats. He's still eating his dinner, which is good, but he's not interested in anything else. I guess I don't blame him.

He was so good with the eye drops for the last 3 weeks but he's finally fed up with me, and now runs away every time I come near him with a bottle of drops. I don't know how he sees it, though, because he's got his eyes shut! Explain that?!? I feel so helpless. I just look at him and cry and I wish I could wave a magic wand and make him better.

Poor Nelson.

If its FHV related, is it possible he's lost some of his sense of smell too? Maybe a little Tuna water or something equally stinky might help he eat.

Is there any homeopathic remedies you can give him too? The kitty equivelant of us taking Echinacea for a cold/ flu.

Some suggestions here?

I'm so sorry Brooke. :( I too, wish his eye will improve tremendously. Poor little guy does not need to go through these rough experiences. It's so scary, but we'll all be here for you and I promise I'll send positive vibes!

How is Nelson doing now ?? Getting any better ?? Or still no signs of improvement.....

Thanks for asking!

It's hard to tell. His eye looks about the same, but he is opening it more, which tells me he isn't in so much pain. That's exactly what the eye doctor told me to expect, so I am hopeful that the treatment is working like it's supposed to. We still have 3 weeks more of drops and he's already hiding from me whenever it's time to put drops in his eyes...I try to sneak up on him when he's sleeping now! :Woo:

I find myself doing this too if I am home alone and Stella needs her Terramycin. I hate disturbing her when she's asleep, but we need to assure our babies are getting their treatment! I'm glad to hear Nelson is opening his eye up more. Still keeping our fingers and paws crossed that his eye keeps on improving!

...so should I tell Nelson that when he's trying to hide under the bed when its time for his eye drops he should make sure his tail isn't sticking out?:LOL::LOL: Silly boy!!
