What made you get a Sphynx?

I don't have my sphynx yet. I am waiting for her arrival mid-end of September. What made me decide on a sphynx? Well I wanted a pet that has a fairly decent life span, a loving and fun temperament, an animal to be one of my best buddies! I am allergic to cats but i adore cats. Not super allergic, with fur cats I get sneezy and itchy eyes. I honestly have NEVER met a sphynx cat, so my Cleopatra will be the first I will ever meet. I don't know if I will be allergic to her. Either way, I just know I am going to love her to bits! My partner has a dog, who is wonderful but I don't relate. Maybe it's because I am a Leo

I have wanted a sphynx for a very long time. I was mostly a dog person but I decided to get a small kitten from our local SPCA and I fell in love with that cat she stayed with me for 15 years. In the mean time my little boy asked if he could have a kitten and 2 days later I had 2 cats. I alway looked at and read about this breed. And said I wanted to get one. And then that got put on hold because I ended up getting a Siberian husky puppy. My puppy got to old and was getting really sick. With the vets advice I had him put to sleep. My two cats were very old as well one got a tumour and the other passed in her sleep. And that was when I decided I would adopt a sphynx kitten. It took me about a year of talking to different breeders and finally finding one who was expecting kittens I gave him the deposit to hold one for me and the rest is history lol. Looking back at it now. I well never own another breed again. I am hooked Lol

Truthfully, for many reasons. I enjoy beautiful and unusual kittehs in my life - I already have a show quality blue point Meezer and a flame point Himmy, and my friends always joked that my cats kept getting weirder as time went by Sphynxes ARE unusual looking, that's for sure. But when I started to do my research, I found out about their wonderful personalities - and that was what sold me. I couldn't imagine living without a Meezer...and now I can't imagine living without a Sphynx.

The face the caracter the skin, everything. After a year of research I convinced my hubby we should get one! From the second our first neked lady entered our appartment she was our most precious 'asset' in the house.
Unfortunetly it ended up in a sad story but trough time we still have three of those loving, funny, grazy naked monsters

I saw them first on pictures - and i loved what i've seen!

So i was looking out for one in the Internet. I found one. I visited him. I touched him ♥

Then i can't believe: his owners did not want him anymore :'( they treat him like a piece of ****.

Now it is mine - he is lovely, beautiful and sweet. I will be there for him for his whole life - really.

I fell in love when I noticed a picture of a sphynx on a billboard while driving thru town. I just had to have one. One led to two and now I'm waiting for #3. They have brought so much love & joy into my life.

First off, when I did see that
Austin powers film, yes the cat made me look and say, "Gosh, I do like your looks" but all aside it seems that cat fur and wood floors, and tile just don't make a life for me. I find myself sweeping, moping and swifting day end and day out. Not fun with a seven year old that has a pretty big schedule.

my Favorite Breed is the Cornish Rex and we have one, I wanted a mate for him and I never really seen a Sphynx before and we could not for the life of us get a Breeder for a Cornie so my Husband found a Sphynx Breeder and when I seen a picture I wanted him !!!! We picked him up a few days later. One year later, we got a girl Sphynx that my Vet rescued , that we added to our family.

I actually first fell in love with sphynx cats when I saw Mr.Bigglesworth in the Austin Powers movie!!!! It was love at first sight!!! ♡

I just shared how we came to get Sansa in my Tail thread, but what sparked my desperate wanting of one was meeting one at a party about a dozen years ago. One of my college friends had a bunch of people over to his house a few years after graduation and he and his wife had a weinerarmer (sp?) and a black male sphynx. I think I actually held the sphynx for half the night, he was the sweetest, cuddliest, most wonderful animal I had ever met. I have wanted one ever since but various things got in the way over the years.

They are very different and I really like taking care/grooming my Sphynxs.
I'm the oldest of three brothers and had taken care of them for so long but now they are grown up!
Glad to have gotten the chance to have my Sphynxs.
Plus...I'll be honest...I like the attention I get from people especially when I go to the vet, lots of people whispering. Hehehe

When I lived in Los Angeles one of my good friends had a Sphynx. She was the friendliest cat I had ever encountered. Over the years I did more and more research - hearing that they were a cross between a dog/cat/monkey/baby had me sold. Plus I think they're sooo cute and I LOVE the big ears!!!

It's a strange combination, but that's what I have, too. Benny is my Weimaraner and Monty is my Sphynx. I took this picture in the rare moment Benny took a break from being psycho hyper dog.

I signed up to be a foster carer. Three days later the crazy cat lady from the animal charity arrived with Mr.Burns. I'll admit the first time I saw him I thought he was pretty ugly. After he smashed two plates, kept me up all night howling and opening and closing doors I realised I loved how naughty he was. I called up the animal charity and asked to adopt him. $1200 AUD later he was my baby. I was eight months pregnant when I first got Mr. Burns, he's my baby and I feel there's some maternal attachment going on!

I never ever thought about owning a sphynx or a pedigree cat for that matter. I'm from England and live in Australia at the moment and he is such a comfort to me when I'm alone. The sphynx personality is amazing!

I admit it, i like things to be odd and preferably a bit strange to others. But thats not why I chose the sphynx. It was the hair that started it.

I used to have two Somali cats. The breed is semi long haired, active and very pretty. When they were both gone (Old age) I actually didnt think I would get a cat for many years. But then The thought hit me: hairless! I googled and instantly thought that the Sphynx sounded amazing and fun. And i liked that they look a little weird. But still I didn't want to get a new cat straight away, and neither did my husband. So I just googled them once in a while. Read more, looked at photos etc.

I follow Kat von D on IG and one day she put up a photo of her Piaf. That photo really pushed me forward, cause he's simply stunning. And at this point they'd stopped looking weird to me so I investegated further. And started to prepare my husband for it. Selling the no-hair thing big time and after 6 months of preparing him we visited a breeder to meet this fancy cat . And that was definetly it - i wanted one so bad.

A few months later I was actually still trying to convince my husband and one day I came to the realization that if the kids should be able to enjoy the cat too I should act now before they became teenagers (they are 10). And thats why I Contacted a breeder and suddenly we were driving to see a black boy almost ready to leave home. The last of his litter to be sold. And that was it! I was in love with him (and all his siblings of course!)

Today Im so thankfull that its possible to have a cat without all The hairs, and the personality of the breed is an amazing bonus. The weird thing now is why everybody doesn't have Sphynxes!!

I do not own a Sphynx yet, I haven't even had the pleasure of touching one. The first time I saw a Sphynx was in the TV-series 'Friends' when Rachel came home with a Sphynx. I was so intrigued by that little cat that I started looking into it more and more and their personality seemed so wonderful to someone who is not a cat-person, at all. They look so elegant and regal, I can't help but smile at their antics either.

So now I drive myself crazy with pictures and videos and reading and... *sigh*

I'm also hyperallergic to cats in general. I can't survive an hour in a home with furry cats. :dead:

Agreed. Sphynx addiction is worse than tattoo or potato chip!

If you ever come to the Netherlands feel free to stop at my place so you can touch two sphynx as much as you want! And to see if your not allergic to sphynx. Cause although they don't have fur you can still be allergic to them

I'll be sure to check if I'm allergic to these naked beauties before actually giving one a home. I'm actually allergic to my dog as well but it is perfectly manageable if I steer clear from his saliva. His saliva usually triggers a pretty bad skin irritation but for some reason I'm fine with all the fluffy fur. Here's to hoping the Sphynx won't trigger any allergies at all. (Else I better start the allergy medication D: )

Thank you for the invite by the way :happy: I really appreciate the gesture. Might I ask everyone what's so magical about the touch? I want to envision it already, haha~ People with Sphynx at exhibitions usually don't want visitors to touch them due to bacteria getting all over them? Atleast that's what I was told and off course I respect the 'no touch' policy.

They are soft and warm like a chamois cloth right out of the oven. Even the rubbery bald ones surprise people because of the warmth. They are just amazing to pet fro head down to tip of tail.

It is true many at shows do not let people touch their cats, but I was so lucky to run into a woman at cat shows years ago who was a true ambassador of the breed and encouraged it. We were very fortunate to bump into her over the years, but we never did get any of ours from her...and she never let us forget it by joking with us whenever she saw us.

Touching, petting, and kissing a Sphynx is like nothing else. They are like a silken hot water bottle (which, pressed against your naked body in the heat of summer can be too hot!).

Like Patti said, whether they are completely bald or have a titch of fuzz, they are silky smooth, with the fuzzy ones like short velvet. The heat and rippling muscles beneath the pets highlights that you have this amazing life in your hands. You can feel everything on a Sphynx... the muscle, the bone, and even the cute fat. And you can SEE EVERYTHING too, which is comical at times; Sphynx are not for the modest.

Sphynx are open, exposed (but not vulnerable), right there for you to see them and experience them entirely. They are confident beauty.

To caress your cheek against their sides, even kiss their flank/hip, and to twirl their tail through your fingers... it's enchanting. I love the feel of their paws and toes; especially when giving Max a little massage and he splays his paws right open for me. Scritching their bald cheeks and chin, nuzzling the top of their silken heads... it never gets old, and never gets boring.

AND, you always remember your first time touching a Sphynx. And I love watching people touch Max, their first Sphynx. They usually hesitantly stroke their fingers along Max, draw their hand back in wonder with big eyes. I laugh a little and smile and try to encourage them to pet him more. They're always surprised at how warm and soft he is.

Once you touch you one, you want to have one in your life.

I have always liked to stand out in a crowd and my little naked wonders fit that bill!!
I had wanted a sphynx since I was 12 years old and met one in the vets office. My mother was less then thrilled with the price tag and so I sat back "impatiently" and waited until the day I could get one for myself!!

I got Skully first and had the most amazing year of my life with her, when she passed suddenly I knew that nothing but helping another sphynx would help me heal from the loss.

So in walked Queen Elfie and because one is never enough Toothless shortly after!!
