For those that may have an interest in how portrait tats come to life:

First you find a tattoo artist who's talented in gray-scale work. That way you have more chance of your tattoo coming out right instead of looking like the person/animal is a zombie or has a disease - unless that's what you're going for.

Next, I sent him the pic I wanted tattooed a week or so before the appointment so he could get it sized and outlined.

Then we started. (Pictures taken with my cell phone.) First he placed the "stencil":


Then he did a light outline & filled in the nose and pupils:



Then he changed needles and started shading with gray-wash ink using a black & white copy of the photo as a guide:


And shaded:


And shaded:


Until Ziggy appeared:


Then, because I wanted color (Ash's & Ziggy's blue eyes are important to me), he started in on color, adding a purple background to make the eyes pop, the blue eyes, and some pink/coral to the ears:
