Well we haven't figured it out yet LOL! They are usually about 120 -150 lbs. We know a few peeps that have them. A herpetologist I know has one & it literally walked through a cyclone fence outside. We put ours outside in the summer & she comes in at night & in the winter. Hence why we have to move... 1 cat room, a tortoise room... we want 2 kids, us & eventually my parents when they get old. :Laugh: YIKES!

Bubba actually broke through a chain link dog run! Worked at it till he got out Hence the block wall with 2 ft down footings. He grazes in the back yard and goes in his house at night. We are going to have to put his heat lamp on soon cuz the nights are getting chilly.

If I know Bubba has pottied for the day I let him come in. He will usually go in every room then crawl in a corner to sleep. He is very freindly and sticks his neck out for a scratch. He also eats from your hand.

that was very funny and very true!! I hate when people look scared sh*tless at Hugo like he is an alien and is on the attack!!! it's sad and if they only knew how sweet these little guys (and gals) were then they would never say anything rude like they do!!

It is amazing how many people are not familiar with the breed! When I know my Sphynx is going to be running around loose, like at the flea market we work at every weekend, I make sure his collar is on......A lot of people think he is a rat and I figure at least with his collar on, no one will chase after him with a broom. "How many rats wear collars?"

One child came up to me and asked very seriously why my cats brain was on the outside of his head!

Another couple approached with discusted faces and the husband said to me "HOw do you keep something so Ugly?" I said "Maybe you should ask your wife that!"

I'd love to see a pic of that! What a cute vision I have in my head a good friend of mine growing up always had rats...they were nice! Does your rat have any fur? The pic looks like a sphynx rat

sara, unfortunately i have no pics of leashed ratties. the rat in my avi was amy, a hairless girl. my currently girlies are all furred, but i'm on the lookout of another hairless! i thought amy's picture was an appropriate place holder until i get my sphynx!

Dragynflye, Amy is beautiful!! My first hairless pet was Agnes, a hairless rat. Here's a photo of her after she had a breast tumor removed. Many people don't realize what great pets rats make. They are very clean, and so smart! Agnes knew how to sit, shake, lie down, and come when her name was called and she was litter trained because she had full run of the house most of the time. Her favorite past time was to go for joy rides on my dog's back...she'd grab two fist-fulls of his fur and hold on for dear life while he went jogging around the house!

I had an adorable rat named Mayzie--she was the sweetest thing and I loved her beyond measure. If I'd have known what her life expectancy was and how deeply I would bond with her I never would've got her. It damn near broke my heart in two when she died of cancer after two and a half years. They told me that was long for a rat...but not nearly long enough for my liking. She was a perfect little friend. She went to work with me every day and would befriend my students or ride around on my shoulder--when she wanted to sleep she'd crawl down my shirt and wiggle into the center of my bra. LOL I adored her.

awww thank you all for sharing your rattie stories! brooke, your agnes is adorable. it was a mammary tumor that we lost amy to. she had three removed, and when the fourth showed up, i decided not to put her through another surgery. she lived for almost a year with it happily, before it started causing her pain and we helped her to the bridge.

susi, rats definitely don't live long enough. each loss takes a little bit of myself with them, but i wouldn't trade the amount of love they give for all the world!

I have had rats as pets too when I was younger.
Dave, Peedee and Stjarna.
Dave and Peedee were white and tame. Cute little creatures. Always slept in my sleeves and never made any fuss.
Stjarna on the other hand was a hysterical brown b... who never got tame. She bit me time and time again. It was a nightmare to clean her cage. I always either put the cat out or put him in the bedroom when I did it.
But one time Stjarna hid under the sofa, I was fustrated and the cat was trying to claw his way out the door... I actually considered opening the door and let nature take its coarse.
I didnt do it. And I am actually ashamed to admit it... It was so tempting.
I was actually releaved when she finally died from old age.
I will always smile when I think of my two precious boys, but I will never miss my girl.
Hope no one judges me for this. I love animals, all animals. But Stjarna shouldnt have been mine.

It gets really old when people make ignorant comments about your pets... a lot of people don't like the "egg" head look on the Bull Terriers; I always come up with some sarcastic comment to make back like "your just jealous cuz' you couldn't afford one & had to settle for your everyday cat." That usually shuts them up.

I like how you make people shut up!! It's great!! They know it's the truth, and that's why they shut up. lol
